Tourist Trap to be avoided 11/18/2008

Huggo's has one thing going for it -- and one thing only: its commanding view of the bay and (unless one of those godawful, Titanic-size cruise ships is parked just off shore) of Kona's famous sunsets. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to go here. The service is fairly dreadful when it's not just plain amateurish and clueless. The drinks are hugely overpriced the way all the drinks are overpriced along Ali'i Drive, with the difference that Huggo's significantly underpours. (I don't know why the liquor inspector hasn't yanked their license for failing to pour full shots.) Their invented ?tropical? drinks are fairly disgusting even for the genre. We went on two nights, hoping for a decent sunset, and found the "Hawaiian" music on both nights to be just shy of pathetic. It's your basic tourist trap and they don't care whether you like it or not -- they know you're probably not going to be there long. more

Delicious food VERY expensive. 12/31/2007

The food and the view were great and it was a very romantic dinner. However, had it not been our honeymoon we never would have splurged. more

Sunset meal to satisfy all the senses 8/17/2006

This is a wonderful place for a romantic meal. We sat at the rail at sunset and watched the colors of the sky change as waves crashed on the rocks below. Service was prompt and friendly. The king crab was tasty but hard to extract (they didn't have the tools, and it got messy), so next time I'd order something else--but I would definitely go back. The chardonnay was one of the nicest I've had, and the bread and basil butter was a nice twist on basic fare. The mac nut pie? To die for. more

Dining in Paradise 10/3/2005

My husband and I had a wonderful romantic dinner at Huggo's. The people are all so friendly and the food is great and this all comes with a stunning view of the ocean. On The Rocks right next to the restaurant provides delightful music too. more

  • We opened in 1969 as a casual, gathering spot where you could get a great steak, slab of fresh fish and pile it on at the salad bar. However, over the past 35 years, we are proud to say that we have earned the reputation as Kona's premeire restaurant for fresh seafood, oceanfront ambiance and casual elegance. Our goal at Huggo's has been and continues to be "to provide a memorable evening and dining experience rather than simply a meal." Our menu shares the limelight with Huggo's open-air location that "seems to suspend over the ocean" and is a stage for seaside diversions. Our reputation is well deserved, so come join us for a memorable dining experience and see for your self!

  • The Scene
    Opened in 1969 as a casual hangout popular with fishermen, this mostly open-air restaurant's rustic, island-lore decor features vibrant flowers, bamboo furnishings and tiki torches. Diners sit on rattan chairs or wooden stools shaded by cream-colored umbrellas and watch surfers and boaters. Local fisherman still drop by every day.

    The Food
    A broad pupu (appetizer) menu starts with calamari cocktail; local poke, sashimi and shrimp seafood platters; and macadamia-nut-crusted chicken satay. Favorite entrees include steak with garlic mashed potatoes; seafood linguini with fish and shrimp; and the fresh catch, served grilled, blackened, sauteed or steamed. Massive slices of ice cream pie and Pele's warm chocolate tart drenched in strawberry sauce are the desserts of choice. Sweet after-dinner drinks are also popular, like the Tropical Illusion, a mix of guava, coconut and vodka.
