I *LOVE* this place! I find myself eating there around once a week. The owner knows me now and is always a delight to talk with. The food is so tasty and delightful. First off, let me emphasize that I am a businessman from North Carolina: I have no dog in this fight. I have been going to Mekong restaurant for 18 months now on my visits to Richmond, and was tiring of the menu and sometimes slow service. So I saw reviews of House of Viet Nam were pretty good and tried them tonight. As someone else said, they try too hard at being polite. I ordered a fresh spring roll, which was decidedly not fresh, probably yesterday's. And I was very disappointed in my Pho (noodle soup), which I am accustomed to receiving with a plate full of bean sprouts, basil sprigs, and lime wedges for me to add. There was just a bowl of undercooked noodles and raw veggies in hot water with nest to no seasonings. Huh? To top it off, the manager asked if I was ""doing OK"" on my next -o-the-last fork full of noodles. Why bother asking at that point? Next trip, it's back to Mekong!! This family owned and operated restaurant has become a staple of our dining. We have yet to find something that was not both delicious and fresh. There are no pre-cooked items here! The super freshness come through in the flavor of each item. Everything is prepared at the moment you ask for it and in the way you request it. Some of my family have requested odd things (such as garlic chicken with only a little garlic). Every time a request has been made it is met with a smile and it is delivered exactly as requested. If you want super friendly annoying service, ""cool"" atmosphere and just blah food, go here. If you want real Vietnamese food that is really really good food, go to Pho next to Full Kee. Pho is so much better. Unfortunately a lot of Americans just like super friendly service and atmosphere rather than good food. Most wouldn't even know what good Vietnamese food is. Even Vietnam1 is better than this place, but Pho is the best. Trust me, driving to Pho is worth it. House of Vietnam near the Short Pump mall is junk. Annoying waitresses and annoying owner at front door. more
