hotei 3/17/2006

i was told the owner of this restaurant is the same owner as ebisu. so i tried this place and it was good. they have noodles and other cooked dishes. the soba was delicious and for the price even better. parking is difficult but well worth it if you plan on walking around the quaint neighborhood. more

Ramen and other noodles 3/17/2006

I wasn't expecting much of this place since it's been around forever and it's always dead, but I was pleasantly surprised. While they do serve sushi and bento boxes, I think they really do ramen and udon and other soups the best. My ramen was huge and the broth was great tasting. more

The smarter way to get Ebisu sushi 8/16/2004

You've probably been to or heard about Ebisu at 9th and Irving. And while you were waiting 1.5 hours to be seated, you probably watched people getting tables right away at Hotei across the street. Hotei used to serve only non-sushi Japanese food (donburi, udon, etc.), so it didn't attract as big a crowd as Ebisu. But now they serve sushi - Ebisu's sushi! Without the wait and just as excellent. Plus you can choose from all the other Japanese meals they've always had. The place isn't too expensive and with a group of 5 we were seated almost right away (though partially because it was Monday night). I'm giving it a 10 for the quality of sushi, the menu breadth and the short waiting time. more

  • The Scene
It's clear that Hotei is run by an experienced restaurateur. The Asian waitstaff is deferential and friendly, the simple Japanese-flavored decor is appropriately understated and the authentic food is priced to sell. But above all, amid the dark-orange dining room's noisy bustle, the place hums along at a hyper-efficient pace.

    The Food
Don't expect updated flavors or fancy Asian fusion cuisine. Despite the inviting ambience, it's still just a solid, no-nonsense Japanese noodle house. Thirteen styles of udon--thick, gooey, neutral-tasting rice noodles--are served in a lightly salted broth or pan-fried and piled high on a large plate. The ramen noodles, thinner and firmer than the udon, come mixed with meat, vegetables or egg. The tori soba, perfect for cold winter nights, is a simple but pleasing noodle soup with chicken and green onion.
