Excellent Stuff 10/2/2013

We came here looking for some new plates, cups, etc. for our new apartment. We didn’t want to go to Ikea, so someone recommended Home Rule. The things we got are beautiful, if a little expensive. But I don’t mind paying more if it’s worth and the plates we got definitely are and should last a long time. Great customer service, too! more

Perfect Little Kitchen Shop! 1/20/2011

Love this shop! Great selection of fun bright items that are all well priced. No boutique pricing here! The staff is always friendly, but not down your throat. They let me shop without being bugged, but always have answers to my questions when I do need help. Not sure why it is categorized as furniture, its only bathroom and kitchen stuff. more

Overpriced, bordeline tasteful 1/17/2006

The only thing positive I have to say about home rule is that it's not as ridiculous as the furniture stores that you'll find further down 14th Street near P Street. Home Rule sells counches and chairs for people who don't actually sit on their furniture at super expensive prices. The staff are very friendly, but their wares are not utilitarian in the least. If you want to buy furniture just to be used when your rich company comes over, then I'd recommend home rule, otherwise hit Value City! more

Crate & Barrel for hipsters 8/19/2005

This small housewares store in the revamped 14th Street corridor carries a variety of housewares. The sleek/bright stock ranges from practical (stainless steel kitchen tools, dishes, barware) to the not so practical (the bright-colored silly Koziol line - check out the dental floss 'shark'). They also carry plush (and pricey) bath towels and bath products, making it a good stop for a housewarming gift. more

Rule of thumb 8/17/2005

Though still widely taught, the old legal saw that the phrase "rule of thumb" referred to the thickness of a branch with which a husband could beat his wife is simply not true. Why does this myth continue? I'll leave that for you to decide. More appropriate for this forum, though, is that Home Rule is more than just one more of the bed-bath-present-knickknack shop of the sort that have popped up on 14th St. below U (evidently because people moving in to the neighborhood have lots of new space to fill). What distinguishes Home Rule is the quality of their items and the variety -- they pack a lot into a small space. Bed Bath and Beyond they're not, but their items are well-chosen and they are very helpful. No portion of their sales support DC's bid for self governence, though, if that's what you're thinking. more

For Random Household Items 8/15/2005

For the city dweller in Washington that's looking for ways to spruce up their apartment or condo, check out Home Rule on 14th Street. It's small, but it's everything you need in terms of interested bathroom and kitchen related supplies, and it's not your run of the mill stuff. While you're there, there are a ton of other new businesses opening up on 14th Street that will likely cover all of your housing needs...a hardware store, plant store, furniture, clothing, whatever else you might need. more
