Food Not Good 10/18/2008

I had heard great reviews about Home in the past so I brought my husband there tonight expecting great food. It was the total opposite. We tried the mini corndogs as our appetizer. It was lukewarm, at best. The hotdog itself was tasty but the cornmeal wasn't crispy at all. We also ordered some cornbread. It came out piping hot and yummy. I ordered the Seafood Cioppino minus the mussels. It was brought to me as if someone had already eaten most of the food offered on the plate. I had two mediocre pieces of baguette to soak up the stock. The dish consisted of TINY pieces of bay scallops, shrimp and 3 pieces of tuna. Where was the crab??? Our waiter agreed with me that the plate looked bare, so he brought it back to the kitchen to add the crab. I believe the manager came back with my new dish, but the kitchen only added a tablespoon of crabmeat under the baguette slices. My husband asked if I had ordered a sampler dish - where was the food I was going to pay almost $20 for??? Even the diner sitting at the table next to us asked why my dish looked the way it did! I didn't want to complain again, so I dug into the cioppino only to be disappointed even more - it was less than lukewarm. My husband ordered more cornbread to curb my hunger. I also downed an entire bottle of Pellegrino to feel full. My poor husband ordered the Niman Ranch flatiron steak - medium. It came out medium-well and tasted as if the meat had been frozen for days. Bad bad food. I didn't even want to bother with the dessert menu. Service was fine but I won't be going back to Home. Pros: Lively scene Cons: Food doesn't come out of the kitchen hot enough more

BAD BAD BAD!!!!!! 9/28/2008

Home used to be great. Great food, great service. Not anymore! The last 2 times I have been to Home, the service has been less than acceptable. Today, I went with 2 friends. It was not very full with customers. We were seated, and ordered right away. Then, a couple was seated next to us... then 5 minutes later.. another couple was seated next to them. Both of the other parties food came.. BEFORE OURS!! After we complained... our food came about 10 minutes later. I mean, how long does it take to make a salad.. I mean really! It also seemed our sever and other staff were too busy with a certain party. One of the people in that party is/and or was a server I have seen at Home before. Needless to say.. we were neglected. One of the worst experiences I have ever had at Home. So, dont waste your time or money going to Home! more

Great American Comfort Food 11/6/2007

Ate here Halloween weekend. This used to be fast food place Boston Market. Completely nice and warm now. Great views of Castro street scene. Downside is the noise and crowding factor. Pros: Views, Food Cons: Crowding, Noise more

STAY HOME! 7/22/2007

I use to love this place for the quality and value but they have just lost it! The attitude of the staff and whatever the cooks are doing, which isn't much, just flushed this place down the drain. Went there one night 30 minutes before closing. It was clear the staff was ready to get out of there A.S.A.P. I ordered pot-roast and a side of spinach...and advertising that your meat is Neimans Ranch is nothing to brag about, that's what Safeways sells...Golden Gate Meat Company is quality. 1-2 minutes at the most after ordering my meal was out. The mashed potatoes were colder than room tempature and the pot-roast was nuked to the max. The spinach was not properly washed, it was full of sand, and cold also. After not touching my meal and sitting there for 15 minutes I was asked if it was not ok, I explained, the spinach was taken off my bill and I asked for a to-go box for the meat to take home to the dog. I paid and sat there for another 15 minutes. I had to go to the bar to ask where my to-go box was and they had thrown it away. I left, and that evening called back to let the manager know I was upset that I had paid for a meal the was discusting and disgarded, he asked me to come back the next night to make it up...I won't even continue...it was worse! If your looking for a great comfort food with fantastic staff and atmosphere in the castro go to 2223! ...or stay home Cons: Rude staff, poor quality food more

Home is not Homey... 12/7/2006

Appetizer: Sloppy Joe dip - almost gross. Too sweet, the chips were horrible. Just the whole thing was bad. Pros: Location? Cons: Food more

Great comfort food 11/24/2006

I eat here at least once a month and I've never had anything I haven't liked. Favorites are the meatloaf and the macaroni and cheese. It's hard to talk during dinner because it's always crowded and loud, but the food is great. They have good drink specials too if you get there before 7pm. more

excellent food, drinks! 10/31/2006

For the prices, food and drinks are great. Try the duck roll and pumpkin soup. The pork chop was also great. Noisy/loud though! Pros: food, drink Cons: noise more

Best Nightly Dinner Special and a great Burger 9/25/2006

\r If your looking for a great dinner special then go to home on there is a special Every day from 5-6pm ,Three-course prix fixe menu & glass of wine. \r \r The happy hour also has 1/2 priced drinks until 7(or was that 7:30) with the drinks at $3.50 a pop I can't remember\r \r This is not the place to go if you want peace and quiet cause it's more for socializing with friends(if it's cold try and sit on the patio by the fire but if you want to socialize on a budget get there early and have the dinner special or the must have Niman Ranch burger it's off the hook and it'sonly $10.00(with fries)\r \r more

Anything but Home 9/3/2006

I heard a lot about Home before going. I went twice because I wanted to give it a chance. The food was very mediocre and the staff was rude. We waited to be seated when there were plenty of tables that were setup for parties. I would avoid this place and checkout another restaurant in the Castro. more

It's all about the patio 8/1/2006

Here's the key to eating at home: Demand seating on the patio and bring friends. It's not really good for dates - but it's great for dinner with a few friends out on the patio (particularly when the fire is going). Let's face it, the food is good - not great. And perhaps a bit overpriced. But for the neighborhood, you won't find much better. I enjoy Home every one in a while. It's a solid staple restaurant. Pros: Patio Cons: Food a bit overpriced more

Great Service, Bad Food 7/24/2006

I had Dinner once again at Home as I do on a weekly basis if not more. As usuall the staff, from the host to the manager, was exceptional. The food on the other hand has gone way down hill. As with everyother restaurant you get your occassional so so meal. My last 3 or 4 dinning experiences have gone from bad to worse. What is going on with the kitchen staff? What once was a neighborhood restaurant were you could always count on home style cooking has truly left its roots. What's up with the warm peach raddicio salad? That has to be one of the worse side dishes I ever had. My last few dishes have been terrible. I think a restaurant named Home should stick with basic home style dishes and sides. If I want fancy I can venture down the block to Mecca or 2223. Stick to Home style menus and sides, like your mac and cheese. Also why are there no Entree size salads on the menu for dinner? Sometimes I'd like to eat something a bit lighter. I hope the kitchen gets it together. I would truly hate to lose such a nice friendly restaruant in my nieghborhood. more

Home Rocks 4/25/2006

First off, it's probably the best Mac and cheese in SF. Add in the consistently executed comfort food stand bys along with several higher end dishes and you've got a restaurant that scales to most occasions. Bring the kids for an affordable and fast dinner or bring a date and indulge with cocktails, starters, mains and dessert get away for under $100. And a great time to boot! And besides the good looking space, the kicker is that there's an attached (pay) parking lot. Parking in the Castro can be a challenge so you're always covered here if you tire of circling the hood trolling for spots. The down side is that the tables are quite close together and it can get loud. But in all quite worth it! I've dined here 5+ times and have loved it every time... Pros: Comfort food, Mac and cheese, Parking Cons: Loud, Crowded more

Cosy brunch spot 4/16/2006

I am surprised to read all the awful reviews for this restaurant as it has been a favorite brunch spot for about a year now....of course, I've never had dinner and mainly go for the eggs or french toast and the fireplace. I only enjoy the seating by the f/p and I usually get the same waiter who is very friendly and sweet. Maybe I just know the wayto optomize my experience there. more

disappointing Thanksgiving 12/13/2005

It was really like a factory. Prix fixe meal. When I asked for a slight variation (dressing on the side) the waitress winced and said she didn't think they would do it. The turkey was like pressed and rolled--it was NOT carved from a real bird! Mashed potatoes were $5 ADDITIONAL, and were served without gravy! They included overly sweet sweet potatoes with the meal. The place was so dark we couldn't see our plates, and so noisy I had to yell to be heard by my two tablemates. Cons: food quality, service , noise more

You're better off at your own home. 11/9/2005

All this place is missing is fluorescent lighting. Maybe the current lighting is used to cast shadows over its bad service, horrible seating and decor, and mediocre food. The over-exuberant waiter even seemed personally offended when we didn't order his favorite dessert. For a glorified diner, it's funny how people can be so unpleasant and stuck up. You're better off eating meatloaf from Healthy Choice in your own home. Just BAD. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Glorified Diner! 10/6/2005

Glorified diner with horrible service and hospitality! Rude Hostess and a vulgar restaurant manager do not make good business sense! This was my first and last time dining here. Thing to watch out for: COMMUNAL TABLE this is the long bench like table by the fireplace, they will actually seat multiple groups at that table without telling you, half way through our dinner they brought two random people to sit with us, even though we'd told them we had two additional people joining our party of six. more

Why? 9/23/2005

Went to Home on a weekday night. The place was mostly empty but yet we were seated between two tables. In case you do not know, the tables at Home are so close it is like eating in a High School cafateria (lame)! We got up and moved to a different table and were told we could not sit there. We stayed at the table, ate, left and never went back. Cons: Poor Service more

Reservations don't work - unfriendly service 8/17/2005

Please take into account that reservations do not work here, even if they pretend they do. We waited patiently for 60 minutes, after making specific reservations 2 days in advance !!!!! And there is no client service at all. The best they can tell you is: ""I'm doing the best I can"". But they don't care because their restaurant is always packed. This is the most unfriendly service I have ever encountered. I would never go there again. Cons: unfriendly service, crowded, bad acoustics more

A Restaurant I Can Call Home 5/5/2005

I live in the neighborhood and have been here several times. I've had a good experience each time. The place is usually bustling with people, but I still find the atmosphere cozy. This isn't a quiet restaurant, but I'm always able to chat with my dining companions without repeating myself. The prix fixe menu is a great deal and the entrees like the meat loaf and roast chicken are tasty. The service I've experience has ranged from so-so to good. I'll definitely be back to Home. Pros: Prix Fixe, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Absolutely Horrible! 4/23/2005

The food here at Home is so-so. The service makes you forget there is even anything remotely good about the food. Seating arrangements for my guests and I were cramped and none of us enjoyed getting bumped into every 5 seconds. Our server was really curt and, at times, even outright rude. I will never come back and I am embarrassed for having brought my friends for such an awful experience. Pros: Location, Food (TO GO!) Cons: Service, Cramped atmosphere, very loud more
