Terrible customer service. Sushi is good, but very expensive. Not worth the rude treatment. Parking is not great.

Sushi You Will Crave 12/27/2011

This place is all about the delicious food and ingredients. I can't part from the chef's choice which include bites that I crave and keep me coming back. Examples include the tuna appetizer and crab roll. Fish melts in your mouth, clearly as fresh as it gets. It's not cheap, but I now eat sushi less often so I can splurge here. The flavors and presentation seem authentic and unique to me, so this would not be my choice for someone to try sushi for the first time (no California rolls here, for example). But for someone who have fallen in love with sushi, you will fall even harder when you hit Hiko. Pleasant service, simple atmosphere, small place. more

Best food in town 7/7/2011

Food is amazing. Every time I come here, I feel like I never want to leave. Very chic atmosphere with a relaxing mood. The service is great and the staff really does a terrific job at taking care of you. The appetizers are delicious. Theres plenty of places to park: theres a parking lot across the street and a parkin garage up the street within walking distance. Most of the time I find myself looking at my watch waiting for the food to come, but here I was so entertained with the fun atmosphere that I was pleasantly surprised when my food arrived more

My favorite in LA 10/29/2009

Some of the freshest fish you'll ever find in Los Angeles. And their blue crab roll is to die for. Pros: Super fresh fish Cons: Sushi Nazi more

I can't believe others' ratings! 4/15/2009

Don't believe the hype! Never have I been so horrified to depart with $70 for overrated fare! Pros: Nice enough waitress. Cons: Sushi. more

Great Sushi!!! 12/3/2008

My gf and I went there on 12/3 after reading about it on LA weekly. It's a pretty small place. When we entered, the hostess told us that if we wanted to sit at the sushi bar, we don't get to choose our own dishes! The chef will prepare dishes for us and he'll continue to do so until we say ""stop"". We were somewhat prepared for something like this after reading the LA Weekly review... so we decided to give it a try. Let me just say that it was the best sushi experience either of us ever had! He served, among other things, yellowtail, seabass, scallops, and toro hand rolls. I don't know what it is... but he does a great job!!!! I highly recommend this place as long as you understand the house rules. Oh... but keep in mind that it's a little pricey. I think it was close to twice as much as we'd normally pay. Pros: The Sushi!!!! Cons: The Bill!!!! more

Interesting sushi experience 7/22/2008

Tonight was our first visit to Hiko and it was excellent all around. Having read the reviews about the rules of the restaurant, and the risk of being booted for noncompliance with the rules, we entered the restaurant with some trepidation. But our fears, which seem ridiculous in retrospect, only served to heighten the experience. more

Best Sushi I've ever had in my life! 7/21/2008

Despite all the bad experiences listed on Hiko's review, It is still by far the BEST SUSHI EVER! The first dish they bring out is a baby tuna with sesame on it. it is phenomenal! Also, their blue crab roll.. omg.. it is to DIE FOR! And their TORO!!!!... I would actually pay $30 for one bite of that toro because it is that good. It's like an ""o"" in your mouth. Sasabune and Katsuya (Studio City) are still in my top 3 but Hiko by far rocks. A friend of mine took his friend there after we tried to just because it was THAT great and had horrible service. Everything was great until he started taking pictures of the food. The chef was very offended and kept telling him he had no common sense and made him delete it. Yes, it should have been a compliment but regardless of the bad 2nd experience my friend had, he's so sad he can't ever go back to experience such great sushi ever again. I live right next to Hiko, and am going to go again tomorrow. Can't wait! If you want AWESOME, mouth watering sushi, you have to go there and try it. 4 orders min is NOTHING! THat's like having an appetizer! Sasabune gives you about 10 orders in your Omakase. You can't go there and complain that the best sushi in Los Angeles is too expensive! It's so worth it. Plus it's just courtesy to turn off your cell phone. Talking during dinner is rude anwyay. If you can't follow the rules, then don't eat there. Sasabune's rule is.. ""it's my way or the highway"". So.. not much difference there. Service is okay, it's not HORRIBLE or bad or the greatest, but who cares! If you can't follow their rules, then don't go. If you don't go, you're missing out. =) I LOVE HIKO!!! Pros: PERFECT FOOD! Can't go wrong. Cons: Small but never had to wait. Not for big groups more

The bomb 7/13/2008

If you liked the old sasabune, you'll love hiko. The food if just as good, maybe better and it's in a small, out of the way, no frills place. Get the chef's choice. You won't be sorry. Pros: Best sushi ever Cons: Not enough seating more

amazing! 1/17/2008

I went to Hiko sushi for the first time four years ago upon opening, and I now go at least once a week. After hitting up nearly every sushi bar in Los Angeles, from uber expensive,to shack, I have found Hiko to be the absolute freshest and most delicious. No jokes here, no cell phones, no fancy faux rolls- they mean buisness. Fairly unnoticeable while driving by, but this is truly a hidden jem. Excellent and authentic, and must try! Pros: amazingly fresh, delicious, fast, not super crowded or trendy Cons: not for people who like fancy rolls more

Hiko Sushi 1/16/2008

Terrible customer service. Sushi is good, but very expensive. Not worth the rude treatment. Parking is not great. more

Fresh fish, strict rules, overall good. 1/3/2008

Decided to visit Hiko Sushi, and upon entering, was greeted by the waitress and explained the rules (no rolls, no cell phones etc) which I had no problem with. Decided to sit at the table and opted out for chef's choice at the bar. The Albacore, snapper and yellow tail are excellent, and the mackerel was fishy and not really fresh. Handrolls were very good as well, accented by the warm rice. I was expecting the Wasabi to be freshly grated, instead it was slightly watery, and I later found out it was actually a powdered one. I had hoped for fresh Wasabi as I refuse to eat anything else. Would I go here again? Probably not, considering Hide is down the street. If I were to choose between an authentic place, I'd have to choose the tried and tested Nozawa which has been excellent. Pros: Tasty fresh fish Cons: Not much, odd 2 order maxmimum at table more

If you want to feel BAD go to Hiko 12/6/2007

My friend asked if I'd meet her for dinner. She was facing some bad news health wise and thought enjoying a nice sushi dinner would cheer her up. I'd heard that Hiko was the best in town. I'm a regular costumer at Nozawa but had never been to this Sawtelle ""gem."" I thought I'd show my friend a nice meal and a new experience--take her mind of things. She arrived before me to an empty restaurant. We had a reservation. The hostess/waitress refused to let her sit down. My friend is 65 years old. When she offered to buy some green tea and saki while she waited, the hostess told her she should wait outside in the cold rain. She had to go out there anyway to call me. There are NO CELL PHONE SIGNS pasted everywhere in sight. Nothing subtle about this place. Cons: terrible ambience and service more

Rudest Chef in the World 8/9/2007

I used to love this place, but unfortunately, the manager has problems accomodating his customers. I recently had work done on my molars and could not eat rice because of the work. I left a little rice on my plate. The chef and waitress both chewed me out and told me they would not serve me anymore because I left a little rice on the plate. Cons: Rude, inconsiderate, and horrible chef more

If I had common sense I'd never go here again. 6/21/2007

I wanted to take my friend who supposedly HATED sushi to an establishment I really liked. Now, I only discovered Hiko out of luck - previously I had always gone to Sasabune or Nozawa to get my warm rice sushi fix. I stumbled upon Hiko through blind sushi luck. Pros: if there are no cameras allowed Cons: pompous arrogant chef more

Slammin' Sushi 5/29/2007

Right off the bat, I'd like to go on record as saying that the service was phenomenal. Wonderful waitress (perhaps the chef's wife?) and no attitude whatsoever. I think that if you go into a dinner at Hiko with a modicum of respect, you'll be treated like a king. Pros: Sushi, Service Cons: Price more

One of the best sushi places 5/16/2007

I am lucky to have one of the best sushi restaurants in town in my neighborhood! I was surprized to read that some reviewers have been treated poorly there. I have gone there quite a few times, and my experience with their service has always been positive. Also, I think the chef is less intimidating as in some other places of its kind (e.g. Sushi Zo). The fish is divine, the rice is amazing (the best sushi rice I have ever tasted). Pricey--yes ($50 per person at the sushi bar), but actually, not the most expensive for comparable restaurants. Pros: food more

Horrible! 5/16/2007

I'm from Europe, but I've been eating sushi since I was 4...and after seeing all the fabulous reviews of this place, I decided I would take two friends FROM JAPAN to check it out for some authentic sushi. Are all the positive reviews written by the people who own Hiko?! I would not be surprised. Pros: Good parking Cons: Abusive ""service"" more

BEST SUSHI outside of Japan 4/27/2007

I LOVE HIKO SUSHI. It is among the freshest sashimi I have ever had outside of Japan (and believe me I've had some pretty damn fresh sashim/sushi in Japan). It's excellent and chef's choice is just great--you can kick back and have the chef choose the freshest fish from the day for you. Highly relaxing! The sushi chef there can come across as a little grumpy, but that's probably because he's just very particular about his craft--and he is VERY good at what he does. It's reflected in the awesome sushi and sashimi he prepares! Pros: FRESHEST SUSHI/SASHIMI AROUND Cons: A little pricey but still worth it more

Freshest sushi on the westside 4/27/2007

Hiko serves some of the freshest sushi in all of LA. Notice that almost every negative review was based upon the fact that the reviewer did something rude and was kicked out.. but they still admit that the fish was fresh and tasty! As long as you have some sense of civilized manners, you will be fine. Don't talk on your cell phone, listen to how the chef wants you to eat the dish (if it has sauce on it, eat it as it is without soy sauce and wasabi, don't throw away the rice). If you really love sushi, and only want fresh, raw fish, then this is the place for you. The chef really knows his stuff! No cooked food or rolls are served here... this is traditional sushi at it's best. The only complaint I would have is that they do not have a large selection, but I believe this is because they are trying to purchase only the freshest fish on the market, and they do not buy cheap stuff like other sushi bars. I also think the service could be a little friendlier. They are efficient and attentive, but not especially friendly. Pros: Freshest, tastiest sushi in town! Cons: Service could be friendlier more

IGNORANCE IS AN INSULT 4/6/2007

I read a review of HIKO and was very excited to go try it. Than a dear friend of mine who has strict dietary restrictions told me that their experience there was awful because he does not eat shell fish. He was treated poorly and not allowed to sit at the sushi bar. People should be allowed to have allergies or live by religious dietary laws without being penalized. Shame on you Hiko. more
