Biggest Damn Chicken Fried Steak In The World 1/10/2008

I remember Hickory Hollow from about 20 or 30 years ago, when I lived on Fairbanks-North Houston. They were just ""around the bend"" on Fallbrook, and I used to drive up there and eat several times a month. (This is LONG before the racetrack was built, and much of Fallbrook and FNH was lightly developed.)\r \r The chicken fried steak was hanging all over the plate... literally! It hung over the sides of the plate, and they used to put (what they called) ""River Bottom Mud"" gravy on it. Oh! Was it good! That, and a baked potatoe, and a tall iced tea, was still the best artery clogging food I've ever had!\r \r I used to take all my business contacts out there because they wanted a ""True Taste of Texas.""\r \r I couldn't think of a better place to take them but to the Hickory Hollow. It's true Texas, from the food to the ambience and decor. I loved the music, too. I've never heard the ""singing cowboys"" anywhere else.\r \r Loved the barbeque, too. But if you want a great steak, or a chicken fried steak, get your butt on over to the Hickory Hollow right now.\r \r Don't wait until tomorrow. Do it now! Pros: All pros. Cons: No cons. more

COME HUNGRY LEAVE HAPPY 6/26/2005

You better have a hell of an apetite when you come cause these are the largest chiken fried steaks around, and the amount you get for the price is awesome if you have kids, gravy taste exactly like my grandma's fried chicken gravy which was AWESOME but night the typical white cream gravy most people associate with CFS, great place to go after/before horse track as well, and wow!!! on the ribs!!!!! tender tasty melt in yo mouth Pros: food, price, portions more

User review by as1an 6/20/2005

Hickory Hollow has one of the largest chicken-fried steak I have ever seen. It covered the entire plate but there's a catch to it, of course. Unfortunately, there's hardly any meat in it once you sliced it up. In my opinion, you might as well call it BATTERED-FRIED STEAK. more

thanks for the reviews 5/30/2005

I started going to hickory hollow because of the reviews here. I appreciate all of you that put in your detailed reviews of the food. I definetly agree about the ribs. Ribtastic lol ! Now I regularly go in to pick up my to go order. Hate to say this, but there is a difference in quality between drivethrough and going in to the restruant. So my hint is pick up your togo orders inside where you can check it. But other than that, I really like their brisket, not fatty and gristly...perfectly tender and lean. Thanks again to all the reviewers. more

Good Bar B Que 5/10/2005

Love their bar b que. We go there almost once a week. It is a fast and carefree place to go for good food. Pros: food more

I'VE ORDERED A BBQ platter with chicken fried steak and that was the worst chicken fried steak I 've ever had, can barely see the meat in it! Sent them an e-mail and never got a response from them. Will not go back. more

Love the Fallbrook Location 6/28/2004

We have been dining in or ording take out from Hickory Hollow's Fallbrook location for over 7 years. Great BBQ, generous no-frills self-server salad bar and, by far, the best blueberry pie slices in Houston. Pros: Food Quality, Reasonable pricing, Generous portions more

Finger lickin good 1/31/2003

Food is great in quanity and quality. Prices are very reasonable and service is excellent. more

Best Damn C/F Steak in TEXAS! 11/27/2002

This is one of the best places to eat i have ever been to. I have eaten at this place for over 15 years now and it just gets better and better. Well worth the drive for a great chicken fried Steak. They also have Bar B Que that is out of this world. My sister worked there in high school and she still recomends it to all of here freinds. more

Better than Goode Co. 11/20/2002

My company orders catering once a month and we have compared Hickory Hollow's bar-b-que with the Goode Co., Hickory Hollow is the best. Pros: great food, great prices, great service Cons: not enough parking more

You have to search for it,but GREAT FOOD 11/16/2002

The brisket here is the most tender in the area, so tender that a fork is best used as a scoop. The onion rings are large and sweet and the ranch beans have just the right seasoning. Their idea of a piece of pie is a quarter of the pan so save room. Pros: Inexpensive, crowded Cons: Hard to find more

Hot Tot Haven 10/14/2002

This little eatery is heaven on earth. The chicken fried steaks are bigger than a football field, the barbeque is delicious and the ranch dressing is to die for. Their sides are the best in the city. Try their hot tots: a ball of mashed potatoes, bacon, jalepeno and cheese fried to perfection. more

ribtastic 8/11/2002

the best ribs in town. the best value for your money more

CFS, Hot Tots, and Big Ol' Drinks 7/30/2002

I love Hickory Hollow. Not Houston's best BBQ, but not too shabby. Also have great burgers, CFS, and Hot Tots (fried mashed potato balls!) Goode Co. is pretty good, too, but for the best BBQ in Houston.....you have to go to Fulshear. It's worth the drive, as this BBQ will leave you stunned. I cannot stress that it is wayyyyy worth the drive, perfect for a Sunday afternoon! Pros: great food, large drinks, cold beer Cons: sometimes cramped more

Mmmmmmmm (and no msg) 7/23/2002

Hickory Hollow in the Heights is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Personally, I feel it has the best BBQ in town. Try the brisket and the catfish. The employees are funny and friendly! Pros: Inexpensive, Great Sauce, Good Music more

Straight Forward BBQ 7/6/2002

Hickory Hollow is good BBQ, without the frills and fuss. The chopped beef po-boy sandwich is delicious. The BBQ sauce is slightly sweet and light tasting. The enormous onion rings are good (something with a slight ""zip"" in the batter that I can't identify), but a bit greasy. The only thing that would make this place better is freshly brewed sweet tea. Pros: Fresh, Tastes great, Clean Cons: No sweet tea more

Delicious BBQ - One of the Best in Town 7/1/2002

If you like lean delicious beef, this place will provide upon request. The BBQ half chicken is wonderful too. The chicken fried steak is huge and covers the plate. The BBQ sauce is great tasting too. more
