Can't think of a better spot to start the day 12/5/2007

I'm a regular at the Hermitage Cafe and have converted several of my friends to loyal fans as well. It's now a regular part of my morning routine. My favorites are the breakfast sandwiches, they have a surprisingly good fried bologna sandwich that brings back fond memories of childhood (I was looking for something different one morning) that has become a staple of my morning diet. Although this place is a cardiologists dream (or worst nightmare depending on how you look at it), the food is always good, servers are always quick-witted and willing to give their opinion on just about anything, and the decor is classic american diner. Many people would call it a ""greasy spoon"" and be disgusted by the carpet on the floor (I think it's carpet down there) but I hope they never change a thing because it adds to the ambiance and the experience, and it might just change the flavor of the food! Many places I have been too have tried to ""recreate"" the classic American diner... this place, thankfully, just is and always has been! Pros: Great food, Servers always entertaining, Cheap eats Cons: When it's crowded, no matter how quick the cook is, the grill is only so large, so expect a little wait more

Authenticity in Nashville...Who knew! 2/16/2006

You can get better food, you can easily get better service...But you can't get anything quite so REAL as the Hermatige Cafe. The Hermitage doesn't feel like it's TRYING to be something, it just is. The food is cheap and tasty, the waitstaff is...interesting, and it reminds me of the all-night luncheonettes back home that served the dock workers 30 years ago. Get the country fried steak with eggs over easy and hash browns, don't bother with the biscuts. Pecan and chess pies are both heavenly! Pros: Cheap, Open All Night, Tasty Cons: Little variety, Inconsistent service, Few healthy options more

This cozy greasy spoon just off the Cumberland River serves classic diner fare all day. It's a festive, occasionally cramped, destination after the bars on Lower Broadway close,...
