Honest, great food 7/21/2003

If you want consistently great food that is an excellent value, this is the place. I have been going here since it was a very small hole-in-the-wall many years ago, and the food never disappoints. The atmosphere is lively, but not at all romantic - until the food comes. The service could be better at times and they don't have a great selection of drinks or desserts - but WHO CARES! The food is great! Pros: Great food, Consistent quality, Unpretentious Cons: Sometimes too crowded, Weak drink selection, Parking (what's new?) more

I dream of ChickGreenBean 12/5/2002

former Macromedian, I have had dozens of lunches and carry out dinners from Henry's on Bryant. The service is prompt, efficient and very friendly. The food kicks major butt. The soup starter, chicken with green beans in spicy sauce, cold chick salad with wide noodles...mmm Might I also suggest the hot and sour beef which makes me weep when I think about it. Henry's is #1. After moving to Oakland, I had to start making the trip over the insane bridge and it's worth every spicy, savory bite. The interior is sparse, clean - not fancy but acts only as a backdrop to the food that is outstanding in every way. Thank you for being you. Pros: fresh, spicy, excellent service more

Authentic Hunan Cuisine...perfect for 11/18/2002

Authentic Hunan Cuisine!! Perfect for Chinese food lovers. Inexpensive and fast service. And you get free hot&sour soup with lunch. Best hot sour soup in town...I swear!! And if you like spicy, this is the place to eat. more

Food Went DownHill after 30 years 11/9/2002

Started going to Henry's Hunans on Kearny Street when they first opened 30 years ago. Later, they opened a place on Sansome Street/Broadway. For the past couple of years the quality of food has gone straight downhill. Diana's Special is now very greasy. The Main Dishes are NOW served dry without juices. Years ago the plates had natural cooking juices to pour over rice. And $2.00 per person for rice.? It used to be 50 cents for rice with meal. This is the only place I've had to pay extra for rice. And the Dumplings are now BLAND, no flavor. Anytime I went into the Sansome location it was busy whether it be in mid afternoon or early evening. No more. The place is mostly empty now. Henry's was ""The Place to Go"" back in the Days of Mayor Dianne Fienstein era, but today the food has gone straight downhill more

henry's 11/8/2002

Food is nicely flavored, crunchy textures are wonderful. Diana's pie is my favorite, more

Hotttttt 10/16/2002

The food is super spicy(if you ask them to make it that way) so be careful, but the Diana's special is to die for, and the curry chicken, and hot and sour chicken is not to be missed. Pros: Inexpensive, Tasty food Cons: Not trendy more

Overrated generic Chinese 9/12/2002

Talk about a place that caters to those who love generic, mediocre Chinese food, but who obviously don't really know anything about Chinese food. This is it. For the lunch crowd thats looking for cheap grub, it'll do. But even then, its not really that inexpensive. I'm not sure if Henry was really from Hunan, but the food is certainly not like any Hunan food I've had in China. Talk about overrated. Pros: inexpensive Cons: way too salty, not authentic, not spicy enough more

Editorial

  • Being closer to the hustle and bustle of downtown, this location is a busier lunchtime spot than, say, the Noe Valley venue. But the menu that's made Henry's an SF classic stays on par: giant...
