I just recently took a little road trip to Milwaukee, and wanted to go our for a few drinks and socialize a bit. After going online and checking out a review or two I decided to give it a shot, being it was a short distance from my hotel.
I went there on a Friday night, totally unaware that there were "dress codes" for this place, which is now called Crazy Horse. I had on some neat sweats and a fleece jacket and a ballcap. My sweats were not hanging off my butt, my cap was worn appropiately, and I was looking pretty clean cut. Within seconds of me coming through the door, two staff members basically started screaming and yelling talking bout "we can't let you in" , it's a "dress code". No ballcaps and athletic apparel was allowed. I said OK, and I went back to the hotel to change and conform with business rules.
When I returned, all I saw was shock on the face of the original staff members that I dealt with at first, it was apparent that they didn't figure I would return. Now when I got into the place, guess what? 70% of the male population had on ballcaps, some had on their work shirts, tennis shoes, and dirty jeans. Now I was just told 45 min ago about a dress code!!!
Yes I am a black man, and I was the only black man in the establishment upon time of my arrival. Not playing a race card but the STAFF I DEALT WITH gave me the impression that no black men were welcomed or that every black man that happens to have on a ballcap and sweats is a thug.
Now I can deal with a little prejudice, been dealing with it in some form or another all my life. What disturbed me the most is that two of the most unprofessional individuals working just happened to be the first you run into. That set the precedence that it could be easily perceived that black men get treated a lot differently than others. Now there could have been instances in the past that involved young black men in the past, but they disrespected a proud military man of 20 years, being a veteran of two wars. I was very disappointed and the staff could definitely use some customer relations/diversity training.
