Laid back, quality, hair style 2/7/2012

Despite the hipster feel to this place, everyone is super laid-back, nice, and extremely skillful with a pair of scissors. It's cute and clean interior aesthetic matches the mentality of the business - they are not big on chemical filled, contrived hair-dos (apparently Keratin treatments are offered, but are done sparingly), and instead the goal is to achieve gorgeous, healthy looking styles that work with a person's natural hair type and life-style. Despite an avoidance of complicated chemical processes, the haircuts are awesome, and those stylists know how to work a blow-dryer and curling iron. Every-time I've been there, I've felt like a million bucks due to the carefully messy curls I desired. more

Best salon in the city! 10/21/2008

I have been a loyal customer to HeaD AreA since last winter and would never, ever consider going anywhere else! I see Julie and she's amazing. She's an expert when it comes to hair and really understands color and how to bring out the physical best in her clients. She's also a meticulous hair cutter and treats each cut like it's the best cut she's ever given. If you like to experiment and try new looks, Julie is definitely the girl to see! Actually, you could see any one of the stylists at HeaD AreD and leave looking awesome. As for the salon in general, the staff is always friendly and extremely helpful. Admittedly it's not a cheap (I've never spend less than $120 on cut and color) but for how good you look, it's worth every penny. This is a salon where you get exactly what you're pay for. Keep in mind, though, that appointments are tough to book and you'll probably need to do so at least 4-6 weeks in advance. Pros: Everything. Cons: Last minute appointments typically aren't possible. more

Great edgy haircuts 8/1/2008

I am loving my haircuts from JoJo at HeadArea. I am actually moving to New England and will be returning to have my hair cut by her. This salon is great for giving great cuts that are edgy without being over the top or crazy. I am always happy with my cut right after I leave the salon. I never have to go home and get used to it or play with it - its perfect! I would def. check out this salon if you want something stylish and not the same old boring cut. The atmosphere is very chill to and not obnoxious or loud like most salons. This is def. the best salon to check out in Philadelphia Pros: Great talent, relaxed atmosphere Cons: Must plan far ahead for appt. more

I have been going to Tami for years at Ruth's salon and am so pleased to she is truly where she belongs. A fun creative atmosphere where you can really see artists at work. The staff here are all so friendly too! not to mention shopping, which all girls love.. give Tami a try , you won't be disappointed Pros: great products, atmosphere and staff Cons: parking not so good more

I have been going to Lauren for over a year now at Head Area and have yet to have a bad experience. She is extremely professional and incredibly talented, especially with my color! Pros: Talented and experience staff, great customer service. Cons: If you're driving, parking could be a problem, but that's an issue anywhere in the city! more

I have been there twice and I love how current the stylists are with their cuts. Ruth is great and so are the prices. Pros: Hot haircuts! Cons: It is downtown so little parking and the salon is hard to find. more

Great Haircut! 4/2/2008

I have been searching years for the right stylist to give my usually boring bob-with-bangs some hip style and edge - without the edgy attitude. After reading the reviews on this site, I just had to call to find out what kind of prices to expect. I was pleasantly shocked to find such reasonable pricing for such a well reviewed salon. I went to Nick at Head Area for the first time yesterday and left with exactly the look I've been longing for! Nick listened to my likes and dislikes and made me feel very comfortable with the experience. His attention to detail and precision with his cutting gave me the best haircut I've had in a long time! Ruth also did my color and talked with me at length about my color choices to be sure we'd get the right shade of chocolate brown. Its perfect! Nick, Ruth, and the rest of the staff were really nice and easy to talk to during my three hour cut and color - a definite plus if you're going to be spending that kind of time in a salon. Thanks for such a great experience! Pros: Great cut and color at reasonable prices. Cons: None. more

The fact that I live in New York City and make special trips down to this salon should say it all. Julie is amazing! Im really into bobs right now, and every time I leave the salon I say ""No, I swear, this time its my favorite."" She and the rest of the staff are always ahead of the trends, and will never do something to your hair that you wouldn't want. They also make you feel comfortable and want to get to know you. I highly highly recommend it. Pros: Trendy, clean, highly skilled and friendly staff, no pressure to buy products Cons: Hard to find parking, no windows in the salon since its in the back of a furniture/clothing store more

I just returned from my second trip to Head Area. Lauren cut my hair today, and I think she did an amazing job. She was very friendly and took her work seriously. I love my haircut and my bangs are fantastic! Everyone there rocks! My boyfriend experienced his first cut at Head Area today with Nick, and he was equally as pleased! We both can't wait to go back again! Pros: Great cuts, color. Edgy but relaxing Cons: No complaints more

Best hair cut & color anywhere 10/26/2007

I found Head Area when my stylist started working there, and what an amazing place. I see Julie who is a true artist and professional. The entire staff are curtious and friendly, and i always enjoy my time there. The hair is impecable. These people are true hair professionals. They know their products, colors and most of all, how to really cut someone's hair to make them feel beautiful and unique. Highly reccomended. This past week I had my first visit to HeaD AreA?what a wonderful experience! The staff is really laid-back and friendly and the service was top notch! I can?t say enough good things about owner/stylist Stephen. He took my long-over processed-hair and transformed into a gorgeous hip cut. The true test of a great cut is that you?re able to duplicate the style at home and I had no problem obtaining the same look that I left the salon with. Thank you so much Stephen!! Julie's been doing my cut & color for years, and even though I've since moved to Brooklyn, I make the trip back to Head Area every single time because I just can't imagine going to anyone else. My hair isn't the easiest to manage, but she's consistently done an amazing job, especially through some pretty drastic color transitions. She's totally innovative but also very down to earth and I always love my hair when she's done with it! On top of that, Head Area is a fantastic salon and everyone who works there is awesome... it's always a great experience. more

Best colorists 8/15/2007

Stephen and Jojo are the best colorists in the city. They've both got a great eye. Talking with them about color is like a deep strategy session. Also, they won't let you ruin your hair: they're honest about what can and can't be done, and if your ""wants"" are realistic. That alone is worth the price. Pros: Color, cuts, extensions. Cons: Scheduling is hard. Parking, impossible. more

Sexiest salon around 6/26/2007

There is no competition with HeadArea. There is this salon, and there are the rest of the salons in Philadelphia. Come to HeaDAreA if you want style, artistic touch, and people stopping you on the street to ask where you got your hair done. I was the type of person that would go from salon to salon because I never was satisfied. When I started coming here, I was hooked. Not only are Lee, Jojo, and Steven amazing at their craft but they only hire the best of the best so NO MATTER which chair you sit in you will walk out looking hot. Pros: You can't get better more

Head Area in the only place for your head! 6/21/2007

I have been meaning to write this for some time now. A close friend of mine went to Lee way way back in the day and for years had told me about how great he cuts and styles hair. After years of listening to her rave I made the decision to make an appointment with him....Needless to say, Lee has been cutting my hair now for over 5 years and never could imagine going anywhere else. Jenna is the only person I trust with my hair. 3/26/2007

I have been getting my hair done with Jenna for several years as she mirgrated from different salons in and around the Philly area. I would never think of going to anyone else. Her specialty is dreds and extentions, but let me tell you she does a hell of a job on coloring my locks. She helped me transition from my mousey natural hair into a platinum blonde and it looks amazing. A few months back she cut my hair into a great bob. I drive over an hour out of my way every 5 weeks just so she can do my hair, I would never trust anyone else. I suggest giving her a serious try, whether it's something dramatic or a simple monthly trim, you won't be dissapointed. Her new home at Head Area is also great, the relaxed atmosphere at the salon is refreshing. Pros: The service is amazing, and not nearly as espensive as many of the salons in Downtown Philly Cons: Unless you live in the city, the commute is a bit of a hassle, also you need to find parking which depending on the time of day can be annoying more
