Bait and Switch and No Idea What Customer Service Means 12/12/2009

STAY AWAY. There's fine print all over the place and they never bring it to your attention until it's time to pay. They charge a different amount for ""directors"" but failed to tell me when they assigned me one until they rang up the bill. When I brought a friend and asked about the 10% discount, they signed her up and gave her a number. Only when we went to pay did they tell us the discount didn't apply to straightening. They also left kinks in her curly hair. They've tacked on so many charges that it's as expensive as anywhere else. Pros: Does a decent job on easy to straighten hair Cons: Not good with curly hair, rude and unhelpful more

Great value, great service 6/18/2008

I go to get my haircut and get a little pampering - this place is fantastic! I go to Ed (today was my second visit with him), and the first thing he does (before you see him) is review his notes about you. Then he carefully takes a look at your hair while he asks you questions (what's your routine, what do you want, etc.), and offers some suggestions. Then it's off to a thorough shampoo with scalp massage (so relaxing), followed by a neck/back/shoulder massage. Then it's time to get your hair cut. The first pass is while your hair is wet, then they dry it, see what happens, and cut it dry to style and shape it. If you don't like something, they're always willing to adjust. I've been going there for years and will continue to go there! Pros: Staff, service, quality, massages! Cons: The space isn't the most glamorous. more

The worst & the most expensive hair cut ever. I want to turn back time. 6/6/2008

I went to Tatsuya, he didn't even ask what kind of hair style I wanted, and proceeded to cut destroy my hair cut. I want my money back. I will not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Cons: Everything more

Starting to change for the worse, very sad. 6/6/2008

I have been going to this salon for 5 years now and have always been very pleased. I found them when I started researching Japanese hair straightening. I love the results I get and hope to continue going. Also, because they are so good and their prices are low, I can afford to tip generously, a win-win for all. HOWEVER, I must say that they raise their prices more often as their stylists keep getting promoted to new titles frequently. I ignored it for a while, since the increases were minimal, but this last time was the most shady yet. I have always paid a certain amount to have my hair straightened. I asked my stylist how much it would cost the next time I came in, since there was a notice listed that prices would now be around $260 + UP. Given that my current price is about $250, I would think that my next price would be about $260-$270, I mean how much could it really jump? Her reply was that she's have to give me a consultation. CONSULTATION?? She's been doing my hair for years! What's to consult? I have always raved about Hayato. I love the space, the staff is nice, and I tell all my friends to go there. But I cannot ignore that the place is starting to get greedy. There are more and more inexpensive salons popping up that do what Hayato does for less money with the same results. I don't want to go there, I would prefer to remain loyal to Hayato, but the price raises are getting out of hand. I hope they realize that they owe it to their long time customers to maintain integrity in their pricing, and stop being greedy. Pros: Great atmosphere, good results Cons: Frequent price raises, Greedy more

so disappointed 5/20/2008

After reading all the different reviews on this place, I thought I'd give it a try. But this was by far the most expensive and most unsatisfying hair treatment I've ever had! I had done my homework prior to going here. Knowing that the owner would cost more but he was the only one available at the time that I wanted to go. I made an appointment for a body wave and only that. When I got there, I got talked into getting a haircut that I didn't really want which was fine. I don't mind. Then they proceed to start on the body wave. After they washed out the chemicals, my hair was limp! So he realizes this and asks if I have time to re-do the process because it didn't work the first time. So of course I said sure, redo it. Then they re-did the whole thing again. While this was happening, he went to help another customer!? and totally rushed through it. After a 2nd round, my hair was STILL limp! And he said my hair was UNPERMABLE?! uhm I've had my hair permed before and it's not unpermable.... so he continued to just style it and dry it with the dryer?.. who's ever heard of having their perm blown out? ugh.. and when i went to pay, not only did they NOT offer me a discount but they charged me for the perm and a cut and proceeded to offer me a membership card!!! UH no thanks!!! I will never go back! So disappointed!!!!! Pros: nice 15 min back/shoulder massage more

NO MORE FRIZZ 6/15/2007

This is a pure gift to be able to walk around in humid weather and climates and not look like a frizz ball. Going to Hayato is a miracle and the prices are very reasonable compared to what other high end places charge and the outcome is just as good if not better. Thanks again to Shula at newnewyorker com I am straight and happy! Pros: you leave alot better than you went in Cons: nasty receptionist more

FANTASTIC.. 1/5/2007

I have curly combination hair that did not do what I wanted it to do when I wanted it to.. I prayed for a solution and found it in the liscio (Japanese straightening). I now do not have to worry about humidity or time to wash and dry. It is a phenomenal process performed by a phenomenal staff. Anyone who complains about not getting enough attention or being double booked is spoiled. I always bring a book because I am a student or read a magazine (am a fashion student) and speak with my VERY competent and pleasant hairdresser when he is working on me. When he is not working on me someone is giving me a massage or tending to my needs (coffee, magazine, water, etc..). Anyhoo, I have never been to a salon where the staff was more attentive or where the quality was so outrageous ON TOP OF having insanely competitive prices. I wish I could keep this place to myself but have told anyone who has asked me about where I have my hair done about it. During my visits, I actually take a few of the salon's cards with me to give out to people who ask and usually end up with none by the time I return. I wish I could keep this place to myself, but do not mind making my appointments well ahead of time. The staff is NEVER pushy. I have never had anyone push a product on me and I trust the Hayato hairdressers will never use any product or do a process that will damage my hair. They would rather send me away on the day of my appointment than do something that would cause damage. I LOVE HAYATO and I LOVE my hairstylist. I will never go anywhere else and actually gave up my old salon for Hayato. I recommend this place to NYC as it was recommended to me. Pros: Staff Cons: Wait for appointment- not irreparable- call ahead of time.. more

Solid Cut 11/30/2006

I enjoyed the scalpal and shoulder massage. A very relaxing place to get your hairs cut. I recommend Kenji. He does a great job. more

User review by elp123 4/27/2006

It had got a bit more popular ince I got my first tr in 2002 but for the price you can't beat it. You need to make an appointment at least a month in advance but they are opened late and on the weekends. Pros: Value, staff Cons: long wait fora appt. more

So impressed and referring people all the time 11/24/2005

I was interested in getting the japanese thermal reconditioning and was browsing city search and found lots of places in NY offering to do it but for $400 +. A friend suggested hayato and swears everytime he and his girlfriend go they get a fantastic haircut no matter who gives it. He isn't one to even mention business unless they really blow him away so I gave them a shot. I had very coarse thick ethnic hair and the straightening came out FANTASTIC. I am amazed and so happy with the results. It once took me 45 minutes to do my hair and get it straight and now I can just wash and go and that to me is truly priceless. My reconditioning and haircut were under $300! Look around if you like and compare the prices... this place is definately worth trying. Trust me you will LOVE it. Pros: great prices, talented employees, good location Cons: none! more

Definitely Not the Same 8/19/2004

The salon has definitely become more popular since I first started going years ago. Now it takes a month to get an appointment with my stylist. I noticed that they are double booking now - something they never did before. Still, they do a good job and the prices are hard to beat. Next time I will say something to make sure my stylist concentrates more on me during my appointment. Everyones so nice there, I'm sure it won't be an issue. more

Too busy and ignorant clients 8/14/2004

I went to Hayato for perm, and cuts for 6 times. But recently i found the receptionist was having an attitude, when I called for appointment and not really felt like helping me at all .I have to wait for 3 weeks for my stylist. Everytime I went, mystylist always had more than 3 clients at the same time, never really gave me helpful opinions andneedless to say, she got no time totally focus on me at all, let me feel that she just wanted to do an easiest and quickest way so that she could finish all her clients asap. I waited for several weeks to get a hairdo change, but it turned out to be like this. They always overbooking and let clients to wait. And not just me, same to my BF too,You dont get what you pay for! Pros: affordable price, 10 min massage Cons: , over-booking, no attnetion on you more

Excellent value for money 6/10/2004

I went to get thermal reconditioning ... and they were excellent. I got it done from Mr. Hayato himself ... not expensive like other places and the haircut he gave me is fantastic too. I can't wait to go back ... its worth every penny spent. The staff is friendly and helpful and the chair massages were a real bonus. more

Loved It 5/10/2004

I actually went here to get the Japanese straightening. That plus a haircut only came out to 280 dollars. The staff was so friendly, and they gave you a really long massage too. I loved how my hair came out. I already have scheduled a second appointment with them. The only real problem is that with my stylist, there is a month's wait list for an appointment, so you have to make one far in advance. Pros: Inexpensive, Very Friendly staff, Relaxing environment more

Best Haircut, not for Coloring though 1/29/2004

Having read all the rave reviews and upon a recommendation, I went to Hayato for the first time for both a cut and a color. The haircut is fantastic! Best one I ever got, and I am used to going to the high end fancy salons. The only quibble I have is that the coloring did not get all of my gray hair and I ended up having to pull some of my grays out when I got home. This totally defeats the purpose of getting your hair colored. Plus parts of it came out orange when I specifically said no orange. But definitely go there for a haircut. They throw in a nice massage too. Pros: Late Hours & Sunday, Good haircut, Massage included Cons: Not expert coloring, Wait 1/2 hour, Only 2 directors more

Japanese hair straightening 3/31/2003

I went there for the thermal reconditioning and they did an amazing job. Plus, the prices were great and i can't wait to go back. more

What a Deal! 11/25/2002

Spend $65 on a haircut, and later $215 on Thermal Reconditioning (ie, Japanese hair straightening). Other salon charges $500+ for that. Both came out PERFECT ! Nice shoulder massage. Didn't push any products on me. Very polite, honest and professional. This place should be on the ""BEST Haircut under $100"" list. What a great find. Pros: affordable, honest opinion, free massage Cons: location more

Optimal Hair 9/27/2002

Hairstyle that looks good on one person doesn't necessarily mean it'll look good on you. Stylists at Hayato is excellent at finding and styling hair that's right for you. You'll see a lot of reviews about their great massages and service. These are all useless if they give bad haircuts, but they are superb. Go to one and ask them to recommend a cut instead telling them what you want. You'll be surprised! more

Excellent service, best haircut 7/20/2002

I have been having my haircut at Hayato for many years as a resident of NY & even after I moved. Mina & all the staff are excellent. Their cuts are never sloppily done -- they are always precise and include a little massage. They are good for classic haircuts as well as trendy. Clearly and consistently the best haircut & value in all of NYC. Pros: Quality haircut, Attentive staff, Friendly more
