an indie favorite 5/16/2006

Besides being a Cambridge landmark, The Harvard Book Store offers a great selection and helpful service with the satisfaction of supporting a local, independent retailer. The store is stuffed with a wide range of books, from the newest releases to fantastic remainders at a discount price to used books just begging to be browsed. If something isn't in the store, the staff will quickly take steps to order it for you (the turnaround time for such orders is quick) or even recommend another place if necessary. more

Harvard Bookstore 4/24/2006

Harvard Bookstore boasts the biggest shopping window of its kind in Harvard Square. You get more than the latest titles here. their speaker series elevates the discourse, their remainder specials diffuse knowledge and their in-depth collection furthers inquiry and broadens reading tastes. The managers are ever aware of the trends set by Banres and Noble and other big chains. They are paid to fashion a strategy that will keep the art and business sof independent book-selling alive. A trip to the store will convince most of the curios that the task is in sure hands. more

Best Used Books Ever 3/19/2006

Sure, the upstairs is an excellent indie bookstore with a carefully chosen selection, extensive remainders, academic books and art books. But the basement, my friends, is a used-book-lover's paradise. The population surrounding Harvard Square has offered an extensive range of fiction, psychology, biography, social science, literary criticism, sci-fi, and cookbooks. The prices are slightly more than half the cover cost, which is sweet if you snag an older edition of something. They buy back but are very picky and somewhat ruthless, so check your heart at the door and take nothing personally. A very pleasant place to while away an hour and get an armload of great books for a pittance. more

Harvard Book Store 10/12/2005

Harvard Book Store is just one of the many bookstores in Harvard Square that are a must if you love books. Down the street the "heart" of the Square, it is accessible by the red line T. The upstairs is filled with new books to purchase. The downstairs is where you can find used treasures. You can browse this store for literally hours, week after week and find something new and interesting every time. more

One of Harvard Square's Famous Book Stores! 9/29/2005

Harvard Square is famous for its academics (of course) and along with that, it is also famous for the ability one has when in Harvard Square to stroll from bookstore to bookstore. In the past 10 years or so, many of the bookstores have started sadly disappearing, but this one has stood strong. I believe it is still independently owned and does have a good selection of unique books. To clarify, this is NOT the "Coop" or the main Harvard University Bookstore. This one is a short walk from the center of the square, but it is a great little place to browse and find that perfect book to read! Enjoy! more

good place for discounts on books 9/13/2005

At Harvard Bookj Store, you can always find a good deal. The books outside on the table or just inside near the window, are at awesome discounts. Even, at prices less than those online. This is one of the last family-owned bookstores left in Harvard Square. There is a lot of good stuff. Check it out! more

Great place -- a true independent 8/18/2005

A wonderful independent bookstore. Wonderful used section downstairs, although the used prices have been creeping up over the years. One of the best discounted new books sections down there and upstairs near the stairwell. A very intellectual selection of remainders -- browse with the professors. Nice staff recommendations. Frequent Buyer card gives you 20% off a purchase after you spend $200 or so. Very pleasant atmosphere. Fun to browse. Carpeted with nice music. Stay for hours -- places to sit. No cafe, but filled with books. Probably the best selction of scholarly books in Boston. more

Books 8/11/2005

The service at this local bookselling landmark is excellent, the atmosphere inviting and the stock wide-ranging and full of unexpected and obscure treasures. While many of the major chains keep things simple and order their stock from only the largest publishers, the Harvard Book Store casts its net a little wider. more

One of the best 7/28/2005

Harvard Bookstore is one of the best independent bookstores in Harvard Square. There are a few big rooms with a wide variety of books. You can find nearly anything here. There is a fantastic selection of books that are by smaller publishers that are somewhat harder to find in big chain stores. The best part of this store is the really great book readings and book signings that they offer. They have some really fantastic authors visiting regularly. I saw the editors of Found Magazine talk there last year and it was great! When the reading room gets too packed they set up cameras so the rest of the store patrons can watch the reading on the televisions throughout the store. It’s a great shop and has some of the friendliest staff ever. more

Great for shopping for used books if you know you don't care and want to save some moolah. The staff are cooperative in helping find books you are looking for. Wether it is to browse around or something you have in mind for, they will probably have it. Definitely harvard square's hidden treasure. more

Harvard Square's Remaining Great Bookstore 2/25/2005

Now that Wordsworth is no longer with us (sniff, sniff), Harvard Book Store is my favorite in the Square.. And in some ways, to be fair, it was always better . Because it is roomier, it is more comfortable for browsing, it's selection is better in some areas, they have a great used book selection, and it's staff is incredibly knowledgeable. In short, it's a great bookstore. more
