My friend and I had a wonderful experience at The Hartwood Restaurant the other day. We had never been there before and were pleasantly surprised by this "Restaurant in a Bookstore"! The food was delicious and what I liked the most was that our soup was nice and hot! We are goind back on Valentine's Day for Dinner since they were voted most romantic! Way to go Hartwood! Pros: the staff more

best meals in the north hills by far 1/16/2007

what a beautiful place to dine, from the beginning we walk in to the hartwood until when we left at the end of our meal. the place is incredible. it was busy when we arrived so we mingled among the books til we were seated. the waitress was pleasant , we started with the soup, hot and sour ham. then we split a salad which was a spinach wonbok with a honey lime vinaigrette. then on to our dinners, the crab stuffed salmon with spicy lobster cream sauce and filet mignon with bearnaise, excellent. we finished our meals with dessert . a chocolate drop cake with berries and whip cream. this place is amazing and we have been back twice more since then and have taken our friends with us both of those times. they said they be back also. as we will again, the service has been outstanding every time, try it and you will see marie karsten Pros: everything Cons: none more

Sadly over-rated 1/9/2007

After hearing friends rave about the food and service, my party and I were extremely disappointed from the moment we were greeted without a smile or friendly conversation, we went on to order our lunch... of which one entree was inedible and returned, to the uncommonly cold temperature. The atmosphere was very quaint and cozy though. Also surprising was that reservations were insisted upon although there were only three other parties in the whole place the whole time we were there!!! We did feel a bit rushed, but to be fair, the hours of operation are limited. Perhaps they cater to their dinner crowd in which case... maybe they should only open for dinner. I would be very hesitant to return or recommend the restaurant, at least for lunch. more

The best restaurant in Pittsburgh! 2/2/2006

The Hartwood Restaurant was the best surprise in culinary delight this year! The food was extraordinary with a Polynesian flare, but for those of you meat and potato lovers, the filet mignon was superb. The seafood was the best I have ever had in the Pittsburgh area. The portions were extremely generous for the price. The service was also well paired with the food, friendly and very knowledgeable. The wine menu was great, ecclectic but tasteful. I highly reccommend this restaurant for any occassion. Pros: Service, Food quality, Ambience more

  • The Scene
The rustic charm of nearby Hartwood Acres (no affiliation) is carried over into this restaurant, housed in what used to be an old mining building. One of the owners, who will probably be asking to take your coat, will seat you with all the grace and dignity a guest deserves. Some of the restaurant tables are actually located in The Bookworks Cafe, housed in an adjacent room. If you're lucky enough to get a table there (hint: plan ahead), you'll feel like you're eating in a fancy library.

    The Food
The menu changes weekly and is very brief with just five entrees at a time. But the bases were covered: filet mignon, salmon, osso bucco, lobster tail and a vegetarian tofu stir-fry dish. The filet was prepared just right and the Canadian lobster tail could have been larger to match the price. The sides on this night were mashed potatoes and dilled carrots lacked imagination and flavor, but the meal, as a whole, was above average.
