Editorial review from Citysearch 3/22/2014

A customer service tune-up for the staff would be helpful. Calling in for confirmation of installation with Joel was an off-putting experience. Coupled with the so-so quality of the lighting we purchased, I'll be shopping elsewhere. Sadly, this was the second consecutive lackluster experience with this store. more

I love this place. A wonderful family run business. Harold's has got a great showroom with tons of lighting ideas and if you don't see what you need they've got specialists to help find options in their many ordering books. Lampshades in all shapes and sizes. I've shopped here for many years (for fixtures and repairs) and never been disappointed. more

Don't bring them good stuff for repairs!! 6/11/2011

Brought lamp in to be rewired. Not only did they break off two of the three leaves of my art nouveau bronze lamp, they totally lost the front leaf and glued the other one back on - no financial compensation. Aesthetically, my lamp is ruined. I'm a designer and new the area. Lesson learned!!! more

Unfriendly, dismissive and insulting service 4/21/2011

I went to Harold's to purchase an item. When I walked in the door a salesperson was helping someone else so I didn't think anything of being ignored. The next person to come in, though, got a ""Hi, be right with you."" So, I interrupted and asked if there was someone else who could help me. A second person ran out, asked what I wanted, walked me over to where the items were, waved his arms around at the shelves of merchandise and disappeared. So, I was left to my own devices in choosing the item even though I really needed some expert advice. Eventually, a woman came out and asked if I was doing alright. I said I could use some help. She was somewhat helpful but she, too, disappeared leaving me on my own. After I'd selected the item, I brought it up to the cashier who asked me ""Is that ALL?"" as though it weren't enough to even bother with. I usually go to Hansen's Lamp and Shade in Lake City for higher end lighting needs even though Harold's is much closer to home. I'll continue to drive the extra distance to Hansen's as this was a uniformly negative experience. more

Harold's Lamps & Shades 4/12/2009

We have purchased various desk lamps from Harold's over the years and been satisfied with their quality. We have also had a lamp repaired through their store. They carry lamps with a wide range of prices and styles, and have quite a number of lamp shades to choose from as well. more

top-quality light fixtures 12/23/2008

Harold's in Wallingford is a full-service lighting store with a great selection of fine quality fixtures and shades. They will rewire your fixtures and have great representatives who can answer all your product-related questions. more

Disappointing custom-lamp creation 12/13/2008

i brought to Harold's an expensive vase that I'd purchased to have them make it into a lamp. Not only did they not call me when it was ready--when I called to check on it they said it'd be ready for two weeks--but they also put on a really old-looking power cord. I've since had two interior decorator friends comment on the lamp and ask me where I got it done, as they can't believe that Harold's put a 1960s-looking cord on this gorgeous vase. The faux bronze cap they used on it also just doesn't complement the piece and looks cheap. I wish I'd brought the lamp elsewhere! more

Frustrating lack of customer service 5/14/2007

We came here on a weekend, and waited for 15 min. to get helped before hunting someone down. I gave some guidelines as to what we were looking for ? size, style, color, price range ? and we were left at a bookshelf full of binders. It was overwhelming, since we?d asked to be pointed to a couple of brands that might suit us well, and they carry a HUGE selection. I figured they were just too busy on a weekend, so I emailed via their ""Contact Us"" link, and got no response. Since no prices or items are listed on their website, you have to look up each company via their vendor list, find items you like on the individual websites, and call Harold?s to have them look up the info about pricing, etc. So I called and read off a handful of items to get info, but all the stuff turned out to be either too big for our space or out of our price range or the wrong color. I mentioned we?d tried to come in had no luck, and asked the sales clerk to point me in the direction of a brand or two so I'd be able to look more efficiently. The clerk suggested 1 brand that was a totally different style than what I?d described, and said we should come in on a weekday instead, but we both work full-time and they close early. I asked if we could make a weekend ""appointment"" ? nope. I get that this store is very busy, but every step of the way we got no help, and we weren't being crazy demanding ? for all I know, they have a terrific selection of lighting fixtures, but I couldn?t tell you, because they just didn?t help. I wish Harold?s had better service because I like the idea of going somewhere local and family-owned instead of a big chain like Home Depot (which keeps its lamps in stock so you don?t pay shipping, unlike Harold?s), but they just made it a very unpleasant experience. I hope other people have better luck that we did with them, but I'm really not impressed and I doubt I'll go back if I ever need lighting again in the future. more
