Good ol' Southern Food 1/4/2010

Fried chicken, fried chicken, fried chicken 5/18/2008

Great fried chicken, a little salty but crispy, moist and well-seasoned. Portions are ample but not enough to be shared by two. The braised ox-tail is delicious as well as the chicken fried steak, but both were unnecessarily drenched with a large amount of gravy. It's a small place and since they do not accept reservations, you'll have to wait for a table. They do a lot of takeout. They have several beers on tap and the Hard Knox Pale Ale is pretty good with a bitter bite at the end. They don't have a take-out menu and encourage you to order on-line for take-out or patronize their new 2nd cafe on Clement Street, in the Richmond dist. Plan to give that place a try as well. Pros: Fried chicken, oxtail, chicken fried steaks are all good Cons: Parking, sm cafe, no reservations, sides do not shine like the main courses more

Awesome fried chicken 3/10/2008

Hard Knox is a definitely a one-of-a-kind sorta place. Soul food cooked up by a Vietnamese couple from Texas... Sounds confusing, but they cook up some tasty fried chicken! It's not a huge place - probably seats 25 or so, but not overly crowded on the Sunday afternoon we visited. Fun, funky vibe to the place, since it's built with a lot of recycled materials, but in a good way. We both had fried chicken and we each ordered different side dishes with mixed results. Mac and cheese definitely reminded me of my childhood. Not gourmet (probably Velvetta) but nice and creamy. Collard greens were just ok - had a bit of smokey flavor. Red beans & rice were passable. Yams were served mashed, but were overly seasoned for my taste. Way too sweet and seemed to be flavored with LOTS of pumpkin pie spice. I'd go back for the chicken alone, but will probably try their sandwiches sometime for lunch. Pros: Some of the best fried chicken in SF Cons: Quality of side dishes vary more

The Best Soul Food Around, No Doubt! 5/24/2007

I love eating here and I will come back time after time. I had ribs with black eyed peas and veggies with jambalaya on the side and of course their infamous corn bread to start the meal off! It was so very delicious! The ribs I ordered were so soft they fell off the bone when I ate it and full of flavor! The service was absolutely slow that day and the restaurant was half filled; it's a small, walk-in, bar kinda place with silver tin roofs used as their wallpapering. Casual ambiance, great for walking in when you're not starving hungry. I'll definitely eat here again, no doubt! Tasty food! Pros: Great food!!!! Seriously the best soul food around! Cons: slow service, little hole in the wall, not much room, dark, bar-like ambiance more

great food, good value, friendly service 11/15/2006

my boyfriend and i go here to eat when we're really hungry because we know the portions here will fill us up. it's the best soul food i've ever had. the prices are cheap, the staff is alway friendly, and i always get more food than i can handle. they have tasty arnold palmers (half lemonade, half ice tea) which are nice and refreshing after a big meal. my boyfriend always gets the fried chicken here and nothing else, and i love the blackened catfish. my boyfriend also loves that there's always sports on their tv, which i guess is a plus for guys. Pros: a good value for great food and big portions more

AWESOME SOUL FOOD - AWESOME OWNERS! 10/16/2006

First off, let me say this - Hard Knox is an awesome restaurant. The food is great, the music great and the service is excellent. When I'm in town, I make it a point to swing by and grab a plate of catfish (or ox tails, or shrimp creole, or a burger..:). Tony, Teresa and the rest of the crew are excellent; they genuinely care about the neighborhood and bringing a good offering to their patrons. I've been eating there for the past year and not once have I been dissatisfied. They serve excellent dishes at moderate/low prices. The food is always fresh and the restaurant is always clean. Sometimes I'll stop by just to grab some veggie sides and say hello. I highly encourage anyone to check out this restaurant - theres always parking too! more

Excellent Soul Food / Fried Chicken 7/6/2006

I love this place, I recently discovered it and have already been back several times. They have great fried chicken, ox tails, bbq, catfish, sandwiches, and the mac n cheese is very good also. It's true that the greens aren't as good as my friend from Louisianna makes them, but this is San Fran w/ broad appeal, they're pretty good. Great food for a great price. Also, I found the people working there to be very friendly w/ good service. I want to own a place like this. Even the wine & beer they offer is well done. I love the ambiance! Pros: Food, Service Cons: Parking isn't too bad more

Good food, great prices 6/8/2006

All the entrees we had were excellent. Blackened catfish was moist and cooked perfectly. Oxtail was very tender and tasty. And the fried chicken was crispy and moist. The side dishes were a notch below, but still good. Collard greens would have been tastier if cooked with meat, but I guess the idea is to keep it vegetarian-friendly. Hard to beat this combination of good food, large portions, and low prices. more
