RIVERFRONT TIMES voters have voted not only BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT but BEST BUFFET more than once. Lee and Jenny are wonderful people and will make you feel at home, sometimes ...

Lots of food and cheap prices. Tremendous eating potential but food is salty, greasy and saturated with MSG. Great for the American Chinese food lover but those who crave authen...

Editorial review from Citysearch 9/20/2013

Really confused as to why anyone would not like this place. Unless of course you are used to eating at the cookie cutter frozen food restaurants that purchase their food already made and fry/heat it up. Happy China's food is made from scratch and you won't find a better Chinese experience. Granted it is a little hole in the wall place, but anyone will tell you that is where you find the best food. As with any buffet you are going to have times where the food has been sitting a little long but that is not very often. As far as the price, not bad at all for real homemade Chinese food, dinner is just under $15.00 including drink; for all you can eat. Have never had cold food, EVER! I think the person who claimed Jenny was rude is not being very accepting of different cultures and attitudes. That is a shame. Have been eating here for over 20 years, have never gotten sick but sure have needed to hit the gym a little more! Love this place. Please don't let the negative people in this world scare you away from this great experience. more

Cold, overpriced buffet.... 6/12/2011

The selection was ok, but every item on the buffet was cold - even under the lamps. The price was also high compared to others in the area. Service was typical - drinks brought out and plates picked up during the meal. But there was no check back to see if we needed anything. And what is this with no knives being provided; certainly some of the dishes required a knife. more

great food,but........... 6/7/2011

I really love the food at happy China. Great selection. But one thing I can't understand is why all that great food is in the smoking area! All that great food soaking up that nicotine all day long. more

RIVERFRONT TIMES voters have voted not only BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT but BEST BUFFET more than once. Lee and Jenny are wonderful people and will make you feel at home, sometimes Jenny is misunderstood by those that do not know her, but she is is warm and caring person.\r \r The Hot Sour Soup is great, as are the main entrees which include Shrimp, Chicken, Beef , Fish and Pork done in many different ways. The service is very good and you always will feel wecome, many times the owner Lee will visit your table and say HI. \r \r We eat there often and always enjoy going back.. more

msmurphy 3/7/2011

I have been eating at Happy China for 25 years and absolutely love it. I followed their restaurant from one location to another...just to eat their food. Not only is the food awesome, but the service is great and the owners are wonderful people. I eat there once a week and there's not a time when the owner doesn't personally know his clientele-I would chalk this up to REPEAT business, awesome food and good customer service. A MUST TRY!!!!! more

Happy China, I love it 3/7/2011

The food at Happy China is the best in St. Louis. Since it has opened, I have always enjoyed my experience at Happy China. The food is always fresh, hot, and delicious. It has a distinctive taste unlike any other Chinese restaurant. The green beans are the best and Lee's garlic chicken is to die for. He makes a special dish just for me with a lobster sauce that is unsurpassed. Lee and Jenny make special dishes for many people, not just for me. \r \r You pay for what you get and if you want good food, it costs. Otherwise, you can always go to some fast food chain.\r \r If you truly want to eat fresh authentic Chinese food, this is the place to visit.\r more

best Chinese food around 3/7/2011

I have to say that some of the reviews I have read must be from competators, either that or they wouldn't know good food when they ate it...I have been eating at Happy China since they opened and I can tell you that there are no finer people in the world that Lee and Jenny Pa..I have never have bad service at Happy China and have never been treated with anything but the greatest respect...for the last five years I have helped Lee with his free meals that he gives out at Christmas by working in his kitchen..Lee has been doing it for 20 years. Three years ago Lee help feed 16,000 people at the Geason family Christmas. I wonder what these people that wrote this review do for the less fortunate, nothing i'll bet,,,One of the reveiws said that they were chased ot the door asking for a tip..thats bull.. In that reveiw they stated that the service was does that mean they got good service but did not leave a tip...thells you what kind of people they are...If you like good Chinese food try it for yourself..I don't think you will be disappointed more

Best Chinese Experience By Far 3/7/2011

After reading some of the reviews about Happy China I'm left somewhat confused.\r I have visited Happy China (Creve Coeur) for over 20 years, and not had a bad experience. I have always found the food to be very fresh and delicious. The shrimp and chicken dishes are outstanding. I have been around long enough to know there are some people that can't be pleased even if the food is free.\r Lee and his wife Jenny (owners) strive to please their customers. I have never been chased for a tip, or even been ask for one.\r Lee and his wife donated at least 5,000 meals this past Thanksgiving and Christmas for the homeless.\r They are good christian people. You will find their place open on Sunday but you won't find Lee and Jenny there.\r Because every Sunday they are at their church.\r If you should have a problem with one of the 30 plus different foods offered just let Lee know, it will be resolved.\r Again based on my 20 plus years dining there I have to wonder if some of these reviews just might be offered by some of Happy China's competitors.\r So I (Gus Loness) strongly recommend this restaurant. more

Not A Very ""Happy China"" Experience. 2/13/2011

Never Again. Some of the food was OK but most of it was dried up, over cooked, or just plain nasty. The only nice thing about this place is the Mr. Owner. He comes around and talks to people and tries to have a conversation. He walks around trying to fill you up with his pot full of crazy rice. I agree with the comment about the women that works the cash register is very rude. I will say the Hispanic waiter crew was very good at there job. NO DESERT. Not worth the price. Will never go back. more

U R Crazy if you think this place is good 12/21/2010

Some of the food there is OK but most of it is just plain nasty. Dirty glasses and silverwear. The only nice thing about this place is the Mr. Owner. He comes around and talks to people and tries to have a conversation but his wife that works the cash register is the most rude person I ever saw and is so money hungry and tight she squeaks. She acts like we are there for her. I worked at a dealer where they took their vehicle for service(no, will not say where)and she was the most demanding lady and wanted everything for free. We hated it when we saw her drive up. Even if the place was nice and had great food I would NOT go there anymore because of her. I say RUN, DON'T WALK AWAY. more

Rude Lady!! 10/11/2010

this chinese lady chasing us outside and asking for a tip..said we forgot to tip..there's 10 of us eating for lunch and it's my friends baby shower..we handly give the tip to our very nice mexican waiter, because he deserved it and happy w/ his service..i guess this lady thinks that we should gave her the rude!!! I've worked in restaurant business for 18 yrs. and we are not suppose to chase customer for tips outside, it's not only being rude but..your life could be in danger once your outside the restaurant.. Never plan to go back in this place AGAIN... more

Strange place... 8/8/2010

This place weirds me out. It isn't a bad Chinese buffet, but it is by no means the best. It seems to get a ton of good press and I just don't see why. First, the place feels like your in a basement. Everything just seems on and outdated...I guess it would be like going into an elderly person's basement that hasn't been touched in years...It is just dark, damp with no sunlight. Second is the lady that stands in front that cashes people out. She is rarely in a good mood and usually seems mad at something. Then as you are standing there, she yells something into a microphone. All the workers then come out and do something to the buffet. The food isn't bad I guess. Nothing is really labeled. There the standard buffet items that everyone knows, but they do have other dishes there that I have really never seen and they aren't labeled. No Chinese buffet has super friendly staff, but the lady in front just seems to be always mad at something...that, in turn, puts me on edge a little. I don't know...Just a creepy place that gets a ton of great press for some reason... more

average 12/5/2008

i didn't really see the hype on this place, but the buffet is pretty decent and the service is ok... from my experience anyway, maybe you had better. i definitely got my fill though. more

fabulous! 5/16/2008

Are you all kidding me?? By far the best Chinese buffet in the area. As I say, Happy China makes me happy!! Their crab rangoon and pott-stickers are to die for. Who cares about the atmosphere! It's a buffet for god sakes! I used to go to a great place called China Castle on Olive that shut down many years ago and never thought anything could compare ... wrong. I love how I can pay $10, walk in here, and fill up a to-go box to the brim .. It gives me 2 days of yummy snacks. Well, gotta go, off to Happy China! more

Why bother? 4/9/2008

Food truly mediocre. You feel as if you are a herd of cattle being shuffled around at a very bad reception. Even with the carry out orders they have given us the wrong order twice. Would definitely not recommend! Cons: food, atmoshere, parking availability more

Very Average 1/6/2008

This restaurant can get very crowded and you have to stay in line to get food. Also take a notice of people dipping their hands and sleeves in the food. The selection is quite good, though the food gave me GI problems everytime I ate there. more

unbelievable! THE WORST BUFFET I HAVE EVER BEEN TO! 12/29/2007

First off whoever rated this buffet good has obviously not eaten there in quite some time. The food was horribly, dried out, and most likely spoiled. The smell of the place alone should have made us leave before we ever sat down, But since it was after all voted best buffet by RFT readers, I thought we'd give it a chance, a saturday evening at 7 pm, you would think this is their prime time of business. All of the seafood was completely uneatable, And for $12 per person you would have thought that they might know how to cook anything on the menu, every piece of beef and pork was the fattiest, stringiest thing I have ever tasted. Even the sweet and sour chicken was nasty and over cooked. I don't think that I would feed this junk to my dogs! I highly suggest going to any china buffet BUT this one! Pros: Absolutly none Cons: Every thing about the place more

Who Gave This Place A Good Review?! 9/27/2007

I use these online reviews to find new restaurants pretty often, but I've always been too lazy to actually post a review myself. However, after eating at Happy China tonight I knew I had no choice but to post. Wow. Never have I been so misled or felt so betrayed by what others have said about a restaurant; but that's the case with this place. How there is an average rating of 4 or 5 is beyond me. And best of CitySearch? Are you kidding? Maybe it was different a couple of years ago, like maybe they had somebody in charge of sanitation or bad smell removal.\r \r The guy who greeted us was not friendly, and he seemed kind of unhappy that our presence meant he would have to work. The vinyl tablecloth was not clean. The buffet had a ton of selection, but it smelled bad and had clearly been sitting out for too long. None of the food was labeled in any way. I found a hair in the rice. My girlfriend couldn't finish anything she picked out, and that was before I told her about the hair. In the other, unused, dining room, there were several random heads of lettuce out on a table. I assume they were going to be chopped or used in some way, but they were just piled up on the vinyl - no plate or mat or container. To top it off, the bill for two dinners was $27. Way too pricey for what they offered.\r \r Were there any bright spots? A man that I can only assume was the owner was making the rounds and seemed to know several diners by name. He was friendly, so that was nice. And the Dr. Pepper I ordered was like 40 ounces. Which is kind of good, in a this is why our country has a problem with diabetes sort of way.\r \r After we paid the lady (who was shouting something into a PA mic) and left, we went right next door to 7-11 so we could get candy that would get the Happy China taste out of our mouth.\r \r Overall, the place was gross and even a little depressing. I will never go back and neither should you. Pros: Plenty of parking, close to a 7-11 Cons: The place is not clean, the food was gross more

Dirty+old place 5/1/2007

This place is dirty, I saw flys and mosquitoes all over the buffett counter. This restaurant looks old (back to the 80's) and the grease on the table doesn't make me feel better, either. The food.... is not fresh... It's not worth another visit. Trust me. Pros: Many selections (if you can eat them) Cons: Old, dirty more

Tons of Food, Servie is Scary! 3/23/2007

Ok, the manly lady that barks out orders destroyed the atmosphere for me the instant I walked into the restaurant. However, the food was tasty and there is a good selection. It is a little pricey, the rooms were large. Service is average, most of them either didn't speak English or were pretending that they can't hear us. That is until we had to pay ofcourse. Pros: Selection Cons: Service more

Inside, this is one big and busy place, especially during lunch, when nearby office workers stand elbow-to-elbow along the buffet in a mad rush for that last spoonful of beef...
