We have found there is surprisingly decent sushi in Salt Lake but none like the Happy Sumo at the Gateway Mall downtown. It is excellent fresh sushi with many options of rolls to...

Fish Good! Service Okay, attitude of employees other than our waitress was condescending. Very pretentious atmosphere. May have been a bad night. Overpriced, but with the overhea...

Hot Waitresses isn't enough 6/25/2003

I've been here before and been relatively happy with previous experiences. But this time was terrible. Even though it was Sunday and there was NO other patrons ahead of us, we waited 15 minutes to be seated in the empty restaurant. We told the waitress as soon as we sat down that we were ready to order, but she took another 10 minutes to come back and actually take it. Add to that the fact that we waited nearly 35 minutes to be served our three rolls, and you get a pretty terrible experience. At least run my credit card as quickly as possible, next time. Oh, wait. . . there won't be a next time. Pros: Hot Waitresses Cons: Not Much Else more

Not Just a Sushi Bar 6/2/2003

Although sushi is the most sought after item in their restaurant, they do have other items on the menu for those whom aren't comfortable eating raw fish. My personal favorite is the Teriyaki Tori, which consists of bite-sized pieces of chicken with veggies and rice covered with teriyaki sauce. Yum! Pros: Food (variety), Atmosphere, Service more

Favorite Sushi Place 2/19/2003

While shopping, we stopped in to try the Happy Sumo for lunch and couldn't believe how delicious everything was. The place was packed and the service was still tip top! The restaurant is conveniently located in the Gateway by our favorite stores. We had soups, salads, beer, and sushi rolls. The sushi is amazing here. We'll be back for dinner! Pros: Tasty sushi, Fast service, Smiles more

Best In Utah 2/19/2003

We love the sushi at the Happy Sumo. My friends and I will drive for miles, and when we get to the city, we only go to the Happy Sumo. Other sushi places don't have food that tastes as fresh and they certainly don't have the atmosphere. Try the Caterpillar Roll (yum yum) or the Death Roll. The colorful menu describes them all. It's worth the drive every single time. Pros: Best Sushi, Great Service more

jsmart roll on 1/13/2003

totally lovely evening>greeted at the door>servers were very responsive and congenial>found it rather romantic and intimate, liked that alot>food was outstanding>would recommend Happy Sumo to anyone with yen for sushi, tempura>didn't try everything, but will be back to try again>don't come late in the evening, because the wait can be long>Happy Chopsticks. Pros: manager is a hunk, great sushi--playboy, loved the ambience more

Unhappy Skinny Guy. Happy Sumo? 11/22/2002

Tres chic atmosphere. If I hadn't known it was supposed to be a sushi bar, I'd have thought it was an east coast photography studio. For being a Japanese food based restraunt, the establishment was almost completely void of the ethnicity. All of the waitresses were blond haired, blue eyed, and wearing practically the same black outfit that you might find at the GAP. The host was straight out of GQ magazine. After we'd finally been seated I got a chance to browse over the menu. My date finally settled on the playboy roll while I decided to brave the ""death roll"". The playboy roll was excellent, which spoke well of the establishment. Then my order came out. I put the standard pea size of wasabi on the first slice, and braced myself. The death roll was aptly named in that it was quite a let down. Pros: Playboy Roll, Sushi Selection, The Waitresses =) Cons: Who's my waitress?, Death roll?, The orient or aryan? more

the best sushi in town 11/15/2002

Ok the name is silly, but the food is really good. It is better than ichiban, and there is less of a wait. The sushi also seems fresher. Pros: delicious, fresh more

Yummy 11/10/2002

I've been 5 times now & everytime I enjoy the food but wish I had better service. I think the location is great. Seating is quick. I like sitting in the booths but hate table seating. Cost is a little high for other sushi restaurants with better service but overall I like Happy Sumo. Pros: quick seating, good pot stickers, quiet Cons: slow service, tiny bit pricy, table seating more

Dude, where's the fish? 10/31/2002

Park City Location: The first 2 times I went here with friends we had a blast and the service and sushi were wonderful. The last few times (and the very last time) the service was incredibly bad. The sushi was good, but the service ruined our mood to eat. Good thing we were so tired from skiing that we didn't feel like moving! We sipped our drinks slowly though-to make sure we had something to do besides laugh at how slow and ""cool"" the wait staff was (the last couple of times, we had to laugh at our luck, because we couldnt believe the service kept getting worse!). This place went from chic sushi with a casual atmosphere, to pretentious boarder punks with attitude that sucks, in nothing flat. Save yourself time and frustration- if you live in Salt Lake, go back in town to dine on fishy, fishy, fish. Pros: location, good sushi, easy parking Cons: slow service, pretentious, crowded more

It was...ok 10/29/2002

As a Japanese food lover, the food was nothing to rave about. The location is great, however, after a day of shopping at the Gateway. Pros: different rolls Cons: poor quality more

awful, terrible, yuck! 10/29/2002

this is one of the worst dining experiances i had. the food was so so, the portions were tiny, the prices outragous, and the service abandoned us, never giving us a bill and pointedly ignoring us! never again will i go. Cons: bad service, overpriced more

Vegas Roll is to die for! 9/11/2002

The Happy Sumo has a delicious assortment of Sushi. And if you aren't a fan of Sushi, you can find a variety of other delightful things to eat. Loved the Edimame, the Vegi Spring Rolls, the Miso Soup and the Sea Weed Salad. Try the KJQ roll (you have to ask for it, it's not on the menu), the Aspargus roll is quite tasty. But for something totally different and most addictive the VEGAS ROLL is about the best thing I've ever had (Sushi). Great wine list, nice ambiance. A little slow, but the Sushi is made fresh, and certainly worth the wait. more

Not so much 8/18/2002

Fish Good! Service Okay, attitude of employees other than our waitress was condescending. Very pretentious atmosphere. May have been a bad night. Overpriced, but with the overhead at the Gateway, someone has to pay the rent. Again, Fish Good! Pros: Cute Waitress, Fish was tasty Cons: Pricey, Snooty, Overhyped more

spicy!!! 8/17/2002

I was told to check out two sushi bars in salt lake Ichibons and Happy Sumo and they are both excellent. However, I have to say the Chefs at the Sumo have it goin on Eddie and Jeff create beautiful presentations and the fish is superbly fresh. I can not begin to say enough about this restaraunt. Pros: Taste, presentation, area Cons: service at the bar more

What a great surprise! 8/4/2002

I had always been an Ichiban loyal customer but I found this to be a great surprise. I have yet to taste a poor roll or nigiri. Well worth an initial trial to determine for yourself. Pros: parking, patio, food more

excellent! 5/19/2002

Stopped in for an early dinner and was pleasantly surprised. I am a loyal customer to Ichiban, however, The Happy Sumo definitely gives Ichiban a run for their money. The atmosphere is great and the sushi was delicious. A great place for a date. more
