Unique and Special Place 5/22/2011

This famous restaurant has long been one of Virginia's best kept secrets. The food is divine and the service is very attentive and friendly. Its name comes from its location halfway between Richmond and Petersburg, I think it was once an old tavern which gives it a romantic atmosphere. It has been our family's favorite place for birthdays and other special get togethers for decades. The seafood is to die for with the best crabcakes I have ever tasted. My dad always gets the filet with shrimp. I love the warm yeasty rolls and save the cinnamon buns for breakfast. The food is great and the servers are like family. Hot apple crisp with ice cream is my favorite dessert. more

Was Once Enjoyable 11/13/2007

Over priced fish, which I never complain about prices, but a horrible piece for the price of 38.00. Way too busy for one rude server and a rude older lady working the bar. The server ran around the restaurant like she was running a marathon making the atmosphere unpleasant. When I approached the server regarding the homemade whipped cream for our key lime pie as she explained would accompany the desert, her response was ""I'm to busy at the moment sir to run to the kitchen and get some for you"", then she ran away back to her marathon. If the hospitality were what it should have been like the past few years our family has dined at the Half Way House we certainly would return, but it looks as if it's turning for the worse. more

Over Priced 12/1/2005

We went to this restaurant for the romantic atmosphere. It was a nice old farmhouse, etc...and tastefully decorated. However, the tables, chairs and paper placemat..gave it a cheap touch to a very nice dining area...small and quaint.. Food was very expensive for the quality and quanity. I used a $25 gift certificate, however, I still felt the final tab was overpriced. I watched a spider crawling behind my head on the wall and the window had a draft. Fireplace was nice. With a redue of the dining area to period tables and chairs, and better place setting...and more attention to detail on the quality and quanity of food,,,,it would rate much higher...But can't see returning with the current shortfalls. Seems food critic posting in Richmond Paper recently..agreed with my review. Revamp the dining room and food to enhance the other qualities the farmhouse has to offer. Pros: Romantic, Historic setting Cons: Expensive, Food uninspiring more

Not all that great. 9/16/2002

Ok, the food was not worth the price we paid...$70 for 2 people. i had the salmon which was good, but i had the salmon the night after at outback steakhouse and it was just as good and half the price. the service wasn't very good either, if you aren't a regular they dont really talk to you. the only good thing about it was the romantic candle light and the music in the background. Pros: romantic Cons: expensive more

Very Pricey 9/8/2002

The food was very good however it did not rate the price we paid. I enjoyed the atmosphere but the waiters were not very attentive and it seemed like we were treated as if we were less than the clientele they expected. They hovered over certain parties. We had never been there before and always wanted to try it. I don't think I would go back. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Expensive more

Especially Yours 7/30/2002

This is the most romantic restaurant in the Richmond/Tri-cities area. The ambience is conducive to couples. The cuisine is excellent, tasty, well prepared and pleasing to see. The service cannot be outdone. Pros: Good location, easy reservations more

HAUNTING-INTRIGUING-DELICIOUS 7/24/2002

While dining at the Halfway House if you should feel a brush on your shoulder and if the candle glimmering on your table should cease or if you hear the sound of horses coming to a halt outside, do not let this stop you from enjoying some of the finest food in Virginia. You will only be experiencing the early years of this landmark in early American history. You may even feel the presence of George Washington standing by the fireplace while eating your Filet Mignon and enjoying their homemade rolls and of course a bottle of your favorite wine. The kitchen located outside in a small building only adds to the nostalgic atmosphere. If you are a visitor out of state or a local please make a reservation and experience a most enjoyable evening at this quaint restaurant. Cons: good parking more
