Great Music good food 12/1/2011

This place is a lot of fun. The atmosphere is very enjoyable and there has been great live music every time I have been there. The only weak spot if there is one is the food. It's good but not great. more

Great atmosphere and great drinks! 1/27/2010

Great atmosphere and great drinks! They sell cigars that are hand-rolled right in front of you. I would definitely recommend this place. Here's a coupon that I found for a free mojito: \r www.mobilecoupons.?om/index/1792/Guantannamera-Restaurant/New-York-NY/-/1\r Pros: Great margaritas and mojitos! more

A must visit, Enjoy 5/11/2009

Good place to do business or to have fun 3/12/2009

I was invited to an early dinner meeting at Guantanamera, they had reserved a table downtairs for more privacy. The food was great, the price very reasonable. As we were leaving we went by the bar, the band was incredible, my partner and I decided to stay, we ordered some mojitos, excellent. We had so much fun we lost track of time. It was the perfect way to celebrate a fruitfull business deal.. Pros: Private quiet areas downstairs, Great live music upstairs. Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Excellent Place for Good Food, Great Music, Reasonable Price 2/6/2009

I live very close to Guantanamera and have been there numerous times. I love this place, but you have to be in the right mood for what it is has to offer. It offers a lot - really good (but not great) cuban food, the service excellent (very fast and attentive in my experience), a really cool ambience with all kinds of people (businessmen, families, locals, all very cool and friendly), and EXCELLENT live cuban music. The music is kind of loud (depending on the specific line-up that night), so it is not a good place for a quiet dinner (although the band does take 15-20 minute breaks every 45 minutes or so). You can request, as we always do, to not sit right by the band, in which case reservations are recommended. But if you looking for a fun, laidback time with some great live music, check this place out. Pros: Good food, great live music, excellent service, lively crowd, reasonable prices Cons: Not good for a quiet dinner more

Best Cuban in Midtown 2/3/2009

Love the place. It is great to go there after a long day, the bartenders are awesome i love their Mojitos.\r The food very good too. It is hard to pic only one favorite!\r Truly to be recommended. more

good food, noisy place 6/12/2008

If you don't mind eating without talking this is a good place, especially when they have live music (and you may end up being seated right next to the band, as it happened to us!). But the food is in fact worth it, especially the chevize. Less noise in the bar area, and you can sit there while watching the cigar rolling by the door. more

NICE MOJITOS BUT....... 6/2/2008

They've got great mojitos but i'm gonna have to agree with the last review......their manager looks like an action figure (short ) and always has a long face.......you'd figure with the kind of vibe and crowd they have all employees should put on a smile...especially the management! more

Rudest Management ever experienced in a restaurant - food very mediocre and over-priced 5/11/2008

""food very mediocre and over-priced."" \r \r We had reservations for a birthday party. The short guy who acted as \r manager, also claimed he was the owner (although this is very doubtful), was extremely rude. Kept us waiting over an hour after our reservation time, and instead of being apologetic was nasty. He insulted the birthday boy who is one of the nicest people in the world. \r \r The manager couldn't possibly be the owner as he lost 20 potential future customers.-------\r \r There are so many excellent cuban and spanish restaurants in NYC, don't waste your time or money on this one. Pros: cuban music is good but overshadowed by poor management Cons: extremely loud small space, you need to scream to talk to anyone more

ID's Please!!!! 4/27/2008

The good news is: the food is tasty and exactly what me and a few friends wanted for Saturday night. The bad news is: everything else. Apparently if you're foreign u can?t drink here. I was in the mood to have a drink with my dinner so I ordered my usual at a cuban spot, a MOJITO. I do look young so I had my ID in hand when the waiter came over. He saw my ID and said ""THIS IS FAKE, THAT?S NOT YOU."" The waiter didn?t even bother asking for additional ID, he was convinced it was fake. I have a foreign ID, which I think that?s the reason he didn?t acknowledge it, but last time I checked that wasn?t something bizarre or unusual, especially in New York City. Like 20 minutes later, after being stared down by the rest of the waiters, he comes back and says ?Let me see your ID again? At this point I felt so discriminated and appalled, I told him to forget it. Obviously this waiter was completely clueless to the fact that New York is very touristic and that many people from different countries live here. Next time, I?ll just stick to places I?ve never had problems drinking at before...like the other 10 million restaurants and bars in NYC. Pros: Food Cons: Staff more

JUST GREAT 4/4/2008

just go ahead and try it. At the start i was very sceptic because I booked a party for 20 people for the first time in a cuban restaurant. Came out to be great. The food delicious even that we had a price fix menu the selection was at is best , from family style apps - empanadas, croquets, and salad- to the main course - the skrirt steak, lechon, and the tilapia,-and to the the tray of tres leches for my parents bday. The service Top-Noch. For a party that large the server did an amazing job on ordering drinks and serving food. I am writing this review cause was my best experience ever. Don't hasitate to try cuban they have great food.My father and mother were so happy and I was too. Graet food cannot be enjoyed without great service. Thanks to Tony my party went great . Great place ans as I promised it was my first but it WILL NOT be my last Pros: Great for partys Great food, Top Noch Service Cons: Parking more

Samething to keep in mind 4/4/2008

I went to Guantanamera with three of my girlfriends before theater. We got seated at a table and the waiter came and greated us right away. Ask for our drinks and brought them. All of us got what the waiter recoomended because was our first time in a cuban restaurant. The food was great and the service was at the same level too. We ask for dessert lists when we were eating our appetizers because we were thinking that we are going to be late for our show but the waiter assured us that we had enough time and he was right. The atmosphere was great and the waiter ( I think his name was Tony )introduced us with his busboy and than with the manager. The recoomendations were great my lechon suckling for real and the tres leche was superb. All of us were very happy. we will be back soon for more jokes and more happy times and good food. Pros: superb food , great service staff, theater district close by Cons: not any more

Great experience, definite keeper 2/19/2008

Found this place on opentable it's a midtown west keeper and find. Though we were not there during live music, which would've been nice, but the ambiance was felt with the overall design. Fantastic menu, very versatile tastes and authentic servings of both surf and turf. Have the Cuban tamales and have many, one of the best ever. The traditional Cuban dessert is also great, as is the banana bread pudding. Sangria is great, as are the cocktails (next time). Overall our party of 3 foodies was impressed and satisfied, the soul was felt on the plate. Pros: food, sangria, ambiance Cons: a bit cramped more

Great, authentic Cuban food and atomsphere! 8/27/2007

I picked this place on a whim from opentable dot com (great website), and I was very impressed! The restaurant has two floors, both small but cozy. Downstairs is mainly used for private parties, or if you request a more quiet table. The service was fast and friendly, though at times I did feel a little rushed. The only downside to the service was that some of the staff was not as knowledgeable about the menu as I had hoped. I had asked about something on the menu and the answer I was given did not help very much. As to the food, I eat Spanish/Caribbean food often, and this was excellent! The Ceviche Mixta was excellent, as was my entree (a chicken dish, but the name escapes me). The coffee was STRONG and the Mojitos are to die for! They have 6 or 7 different flavors and they are each made when you order, not from a mix. They have live music most nights and they have a guy in the front window who hand rolls cigars for customers! Great place, I would definitely go back! Pros: Great mojitos, live music, hand rolled cigars! Cons: Slightly pushy service, a little small more

Can't Beat the Band 8/7/2007

After seeing Beyonce at the Garden we wanted a late night snack. We always planned on eating at Guantanamera and we were sorry that we weren't that hungry. The band was so good that we wondered why they didn't have a ""real"" gig. Hubby had the pinchos were were moist and I had the pina and agucate salad with grilled chicken. The salad wasn't wilted, the pineapple fresh (not canned) and the chicken warm. Based on our short visit we will definitely be back! Pros: The Band was on Fire more

EXCELLENT !!! 7/5/2007

\r I celebrated my birthday at this cuban place and my friends and me are going back. It was really a wonderful dining experience with excellent food, great mojitos (really nice and strong), live music, we danced and danced, great service, our waiter Herman was great. We all enjoyed that night at Guantanamera, so if you want to eat, drink and have fun you must go to this cuban gem, but book before friday for the weekend. more

A PLACE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS !!! 6/1/2007

I HAVE BEEN TO MANY CUBAN PLACES BEFORE AND NEVER HAVE I SEEN YET WHAT HAPPENS AT GUANTANAMERA... THE FOOD IS GREAT EVERYTHING ON THE MENU HAS AN AUTHENTIC FLAVOR, THE DRINKS ARE WONDERFUL, THE MUSIC IS PERFECT. THE NICEST THING ABOUT THIS PLACE IS EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!... THE FOOD, THE FEELING OF HAVANA AND THE NICE STAFF. WE CELEBRATED MY FRIENDS GRADUATION DINNER PARTY AND STAFF INCLUDING THE OWNER MADE US FEEL SPECIAL AND GAVE US THE BEST TABLE AND WERE VERY ATTENTIVE TO OUR NEEDS. THE STAFF IS HAPPY AND SEEING THE OWNER GOING AROUND TO EACH TABLE TO INSURE THAT EVERYONE DINNING WAS HAVING A GOOD TIME IS SOMETHING YOU JUST DON'T SEE ANY MORE, AT LEAST NOT IN NEW YORK CITY. \r \r SO IF YOU WANT A PLACE TO HAVE A PRIVATE PARTY THEY HAVE A DOWNSTAIRS AREA THAT IS PERFECT. I PLAN TO GO BACK AND IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A HOT SPOT WHERE YOU CAN HAVE GREAT CUBAN FOOD, MUSIC AND ENERGY... GUANTANAMERA IS THE PLACE TO GO... TAKE MY WORD FOR IT CHECK IT OUT!!!! Pros: EVERYTHING FOOD, DRINKS, LIVE MUSIC, & GREAT STAFF... Cons: THAT I CAN'T GO EVERY DAY!!! more

Great Vibe 5/4/2007

I stopped by this spot on a Saturday night. The food was delicious, the drinks were STRONG, and it was a great vibe. The live band was wonderful, and I love the spontaneous dancing. more

Never Again! 3/12/2007

After having a fun birthday party here last year I decided to go for a repeat - what a difference a year makes! They gave me a hard time about seating me and my friends because the ""whole party"" wasn't there. I convinced them to let us sit down - the restaurant was not close to being full, so there was no point in that. And that birthday cake with sparklers and restaurant sing-along mentioned above? Didn't happen. Finally, they ruined this place for me FOREVER later on when the manager told us that they had already ""allowed"" us to stay past our 2 hour limit and it was time to go...although they had just brought several new drinks to our table, and one person was in the process of ordering more food. Our poor waitress and bartender were appalled and apologetic. But quite frankly I am completely soured on this place; it seems their success has gone to their heads and they consider this disgusting behavior an acceptable business practice. That's too bad, because I have sent many friends and coworkers there, but after hearing about my birthday debacle NONE of us will be back. Sure, the food and drinks are good - but they are not ""la ultima coca-cola del desierto"" and there are plenty of other great Cuban restaurants in this city that have excellent service as well. Cons: horrid management staff more
