The Scene
This defiantly old-school store likes to boast that Ernest Hemingway and Clark Gable used to shop here, and as soon as you step into the secluded, tenth floor store, you believe it. The store, which traces its roots back to 1923--and has the we-don't-have-to-prove-anything feel of a rough-hewn hunting lodge--is nothing special in itself, but its racks and racks of polished rifles are extraordinary.
The Goods
Customers looking for some of the best-made guns (lots of) money can buy will not be disappointed. These refined gunsmiths will custom-build you a Griffin & Howe Bolt Action Rifle with a luxurious classic French walnut stock, or sell you a classic antique. (Recent stock included a pristine 1866 Winchester .44 Rim Fire.) In addition to sales, the shop will store, maintain, repair, refinish, refine and restock your long gun. The business even arranges hunting trips and expert lessons.
