Great Plays in the Heart of the Loop 12/30/2005

This centrally based Chicago Theatre offers some of the best live productions in town, but there are a few secrets to making your experience the best. First, try and see something during the week; weekends can be notoriously crowded and cabs hard to find. Parking is pricey but conveniently located across the street. Second, be sure and get on their e-mailing list; you will be offered deals to plays you won't hear about anywhere else. Third, be sure and make a reservation next door. Petterino's Restaurant is a gem in the city and makes sure you get to the theatre on time, but it can be extremely busy on theate nights, especially in the bar area. It's worth planning ahead. more

Chicago's great Theatre 12/29/2005

I have been going to the Goodman since I was a kid. Now I appreciate how fortunate I was that my parents regularly took me to see theatre here. I have to admit I have not seen the new space on Dearborn! All my memories are of the old space a few blocks away on the west side of the Art Institute. I remember the curved red velvet seats that hugged your back, and that amazing gold curtain that really looked like it was made out of solid gold, not fabric at all. I remember the magic world that I could get lost in for awhile when that curtain opened. Then you would walk back outside after the show, and the world would be new. http://www.goodman-theatre.org/ more

Theatre at Its Finest 8/18/2005

What could be more desirable than a performing arts theatre centered in the heart of the Loop adjacent to a great restaurant? This theatre features new works that are tested before making their way to Broadway. You can find world class actors (including household names like Brian Dennehy) performing here. The downside? Season tickets mean an uneven performance list. You get the shaky along with the great. All in all, this is a great place and worth the few lumps along the way. more

A Chicago institution 8/10/2005

I always loved Goodman's old theatre off Columbus Avenue behind the Art Institute--great talent, set apart from all the others. But it's new digs on Dearborn in what is now Chicago's official 'theatre district' houses 2 fabulous theatres, and who wants to walk 6 blocks after dinner anyway? Local talent, Broadway plays, a traditional 'Christmas Carol' (and a new one with a gospel-influenced theme) all put a great face on theatre in Chicago!
