Editorial review from Citysearch 7/17/2012

Worked out there a few times I went one Wednesday afternoon Went back Friday its no longer a GOLDS My travel pass was no longer accepted No notice of the change of ownership I woke up early to go work out there Would it have killed them to let me in??? Its now a Crunch GYM Ill never go to or spend money at a Crunch Gym Really tacky business practice not notifying anyone of a change of ownership \r As far as gyms go this one has older equipment and does NOT have a good selection of equipment Its very busy and you wait for machines even at 830 @nite I belonged to another Golds so I could use this one when I was in Manhattan If I were to join a gym in Manhattan it would NOT be this one more

Review for Gold's gym west 54th 10/14/2011

thought about buying a one year but Robert the manager with the bad teeth and bad breath was rude and very unhelpful. waste of my time. I'd rather go elsewhere than help someone like him with his dental bills. more

the worst gym in NYC 2/7/2011

When you come in, they give you one rag, they call it towel. Don't ask for an other one, you will get attitude from the stuff. The equipment is very old and many cardio machines are broken and they don't even put sign that they are out of order. Bathroom stinks and it's dirty. more

Great Gym 2/3/2011

I've been working out for years, simply put. Gold's gym is the real deal. The price is great and has all the equipment you need. more

Unethical and Dishonest 11/22/2010

Unethical and untrustworthy. I visited the gym the last Monday in August to try it out. It was pretty warm inside and Abdul told me that the Air conditioning was being repaired but it was normally cool inside. I signed up for a year prepaid membership. Over the next month every time I went in the evening it was hot because they simply did not turn on the AC. I asked the staff to turn on the AC and they always did but it takes forever to cool down so it did me no good. I finally asked to cancel my membership because my doctor advised I find someplace cooler to work out. The doctor wrote a letter as the contract requested but the gym would not honor it. Robert is the manager and has no power to make any decisions. An earlier poster was correct--he was very sarcastic when I asked him why they did not run the AC. The owner's name is Gary Prince and I have not yet had a chance to find out why he would not follow the contract. Avoid this place. It may be cheap, but there is a reason. more

One of the Best in the City 11/17/2010

I just recently joined Gold's Gym and I absolutely love the facility. I had the perception before visiting that Golds Gym was a gym geared towards meat heads and body builders, but I couldn't be any more wrong. I love the abundance of classes they provide (over 70!!). My favorite classes so far are the Body Combat classes and the Ballet Barre Class. I get a wonderful cardio work out while toning and leaning my muscles. Other classes I have enjoyed include, Spin, Yoga, Pilates and Coreology. They have tons of cardio, including step mills, and weight equipment as well. Even on a busy day I don't have to wait on or work into someone elses set to use a machine.\r \r The staff was helpful and very knowledgable. I was helped by a gentleman named Robert and he was extremely accommodating and very personable; which is something I look for in customer service. He took good care of me and made me feel welcome, which I really appreciated.\r \r I have done my research and this was by far my favorite. The have a beautiful locker room with a tan booth, steam room and towel service! I definately recommend this GYM!!! more

Good as Gold's Gym 11/5/2010

As a puny young man, I was often intimidated by the gym experience. Since I have aged I've become more confident with my body image, thus have begun the long slow journey towards my fitness goal of looking good naked. So far, I'm not quite there, but since discovering Gold's Gym Midtown through ""Groupon"" I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, and it feels great. I immediately felt confident the moment I walked through those doors. The staff does a phenomenal job of creating a heavenly atmosphere, with machine's clean enough to eat off of, and there are also seemingly millions to choose from. If I had a gun to my head and was asked what the greatest gym in the greater New York area without hesitation I would answer simply,\r \r ""Gold's Gym Midtown is good as GOLD."" more

THE ABSOLUTE BEST GYM IN THE CITY 11/5/2010

Gold's Gym at its finest! 11/2/2010

The facility is gorgeous! They have a cafe in the front to get all your protein shakes/bars, they offer any class you could possibly imagine, and the employees are extremely friendly. If you're shopping for a gym, look no further. This is the best gym around, hands down. more

GREAT GYM 10/6/2010

Just moved to midtown and been doing some GYM shopping in the area.. Looked at Equinox, Club H, NYSPC and quite a few other's...But happen to pass by GOLD's GYM on 54st and WOW...what a totally different VIBE....They had FUnky Music and it seemed to have a different energy about the place..I couldn't Believe the Amount of Classes they had to offer..Everything from Pilates, Yoga, boot camp, ab assault and couldn't believe it was all included..The last gym you had to pay extra for classes...Great stuff...They really had some great membership options but I wanted to get more into personal training so the option I choose gave me a free membership because I had purchased a package of personal training...,Anyway don't want to ramble to much but just wanted to say it's great to find a gym that makes you feel at home and welcomed....U rock Gold's Midtown... more

Best Kept Secret 10/5/2010

When I started looking for gyms to join, I feel like I looked at every sports club in NY, from the cramped, crowded, and dirty 'gym' for $50 a month one block from my house to Equinox, NY Sports Clubs, Chelsea Piers, other ""Y""s, the Parks Department facilities, etc. For the price I paid, this gym is by far the best deal for what you get. All the fitness classes (incl. yoga and pilates) are part of your membership, tons of cardio equipment, free weights, and weight machines\r \r Almost all the cardio machines have individual televisions with cable (exceptions are the spinning bikes and rowing machines). They provide towels (small ones and large ones, which to me is such a luxury, but maybe I'm used to less. Great free weight area, and cardio on both floors. I really can't comment on the classes, since I havn't attended any, however, they always seem to be cranking.\r \r What else... the locker rooms are fantastic. Tons of space, not crowded in the slightest. Steam room, nice showers, the bathrooms are very nice and always clean. They have hairdryers and stuff like lotion and body wash to use if you want to.\r \r And the staff is wonderful - I have never had a bad experience with any staff member, from the person who sold me my membership, to the front desk staff, to the cleaning staff, to the trainers. All have been very polite and friendly.\r \r Last, but certainly not least, was that the price I paid worked out to about $64/month. Granted, I got in on a fantastic deal - they were knocking $200 off the base price because of a sale.\r \r The bottom line is this - it is a fantastic gym, with lots of energy and I really, truly look forward to going there after work and on the weekends, and the price I joined at was fantastic and affordable. more

Best Gym In the City 10/5/2010

Love, love this gym. The whole place looks and feels Brand New. Coming from Equinox, I've been spoiled but this place gives the same service at about 1/2 the price.\r \r The new managment has here had some issues at 1st but now it's perfect. if you like a place that actually motivates you to work out then this is the place.\r \r Highly recommend it!!! more

What a difference! 10/5/2010

This place is like brand-new. Awesome workout experience because you feel like its clean, new and modern but then you have the classic tough Gold's Gym vibe. love it here. more

Best Deal In Town 10/2/2010

I love this gym! Over the past two years, the whole place has gotten a facelift. All the cardio equiptment is new, the bathrooms, showers, floors, lights, front desk- everything is new!!!! And they are the only gym in the city with 3 squat racks and four leg presses- the weight room is huge! The staff is great, the place is clean, and the price is right.\r more

disappointing 8/23/2010

I was a member for 6 years of Gold's Gym Midtown West. Recently, I signed up for a new contract, but was transferred out of state for work. The gym came under new manager would not give me any sort of refund even though it's in the contract that they must. I have tried numerous ways to get my money back apart from small claims court, but so far I've I lost out on $1200. I would not recommend this gym. The new owner was incredibly rude and not scrupulous. It has been very disappointing after I had been a member for so long. more

All around good gym 6/27/2010

If you are into free weights this is a good gym for you, lots of equipment all around. They have exercise classes as well. Staff is nice and the gym is kept clean and in good condition. They have specials all year long and you can find some very affordable deals. Pros: lots of equipment Cons: can get hot in the summer more

Avoid Gold's Gym on 54th 6/16/2010

Finally left this horrible gym. The owner is terrible. Shortened hours and services. Equipment is broken alot. Garish harsh lighting. Staff turns off music 30 minutes before closing. Surly staff-many of them fat and out of shape. And get this: if you want to cancel, you have to actually MAIL in a letter. Not tell someone in person or fill out a form in the gym. MAIL A LETTER. Sounds like shady business practices to extend payments or deny cancellation. Pros: lots of equipment Cons: horrible owner, lazy out of shape staff more

A Hot Sweatbox -- Beware! 5/14/2010

Not a bad gym 8 months out of the year. Then warm weather starts and it turns into a hot, humid sweatbox. I think they actually do turn on the AC during the summer, but they also keep windows and doors open to the outside (upstairs and downstairs), which lets in the hot, humid air & negates the AC. I said as I was leaving the gym today, if it's *this* uncomfortable to work out here in mid-May, think about what's coming in August!"" I don't like to leave a workout feeling annoyed and angry... but that's what happens at Gold's Midtown in the warmer months. Too bad, too -- all they need to do is keep the windows closed, but apparently they don't think enough of their members to do even that. Pros: Bare-bones gym with all requisite equipment Cons: Bad climate control in summer months more

Beware! dishonest new owner 6/10/2009

Old owner bought back gym 3 months ago and set the counter to zero for members with existing training sessions. Broken equipment. The nightmare from hell. Pros: Arnold Brown Cons: New Owner more
