Editorial review from Citysearch 2/4/2014

I have mixed reviews about this place. The good: their lobster special is the bomb! The sushi had big peices of fish. The bad: some of their rolls are terrible. Do not order a Mexican roll. It is a California with siracha! How is that Mexican? more

bombest 12/21/2011

Probably the best sushi spot in Pasadena. There may be better sushi, but there's no where with the prices and atmosphere of gin. The food is delicious and affordable. The lobster special is the best thing on the menu. They also employ the worlds oldest geisha. more

Lobster roll 11/5/2011

Best lobster rolls around town. I come here just for that. The rest of the food is good also. more

Sushi Lovers 1/15/2010

OMG, if your a Sushi lover, you all should head down to Gin Sushi in Pasadena, Calif.. The prices is so affordable you cant go wrong. The seafood are very fresh and good. Unlike other Sushi places in the area, they are very busy no matter what time of the day you go there. It gets really packed for dinner time (lines are out the door). Who ever reads these logs pls let me know what you think... Pros: The cheepest Sushi in the Pasadena Area more

MY FAVORIATE SUSHI RESTURANT ANYTIME TWO THUMBS UP! 12/6/2008

Just thinking about the suchi there at Gin makes me want to go there now and have dinner. I can honestly say this is the best suchi resturant in town! Big pieces for the buck best deal and always fresh. I recommend Gin suchi to all my friends try the lobster special and you will be hooked or the rolls or the famous yellowtail sushi, sashimi its the best see you soon! Pros: huge pieces for the buck Cons: always a line to get in more

Better than Kabuki and Tokyo Lobby 4/28/2008

GOOD FOOD. Great Sushi, really fresh. Hearty portions for your money. Courteous and pleasant service (however when it?s busy service can take a while). I took a friend to try sushi for the first time and he loved it. more

Crowded, but good for the price. 2/16/2008

The food is not bad, but it's not top notch. There is quite a crowd. Go in small groups because it takes longer to get a table if you go in large groups. Very family friendly place. The fish is really fresh, but they need to work on the rice. There's nothing special about this place, but if you're looking your satisfy your sushi fix, head here. We were able to load up on cut rolls for about 10 dollars a person Pros: Good for the money Cons: nothing that sets it apart from any other sushi restaurant more

Average food, long wait, unstaffed - but its crowded! 2/11/2008

I've had better sushi. Wouldn't go back. Given the wait and the poor service, I don't know why so many people were there. We ordered the mixed plate sashimi which was okay. The some of the pieces were smaller and chunky in cut. Certainly not melt in your mouth kind of sushi. The tempura ~ average; the miso soup ~ cold; the hot sake ~ not hot and you can taste the cheapness; the rolls ~ were big but mushy and poorly assembled. The only thing i really enjoyed was the Seaweed Salad. The portion was a generous side and I enjoyed the sesame flavor. The bathroom ~ DISGUSTING!!!! I don't think they clean it ~ totally gross. Altho the waitress was nice, the service was just really poor. It felt disorganized and uncoordinated. We had 3-4 servers and saw each one only once. We asked for our check 3 times, waited 1/2 hour and never got it.. Even tho there was still many ppl waiting, the waitress kept of telling us that they were calculating it and when we got fed up of waiting, we went to the counter to pay and they hadn't even pulled our bill to figure out what was due. Yo'd think with so many people waiting, they'd want to turn tables over fairly quickly. it was cute the way they had polaroids taped all over the walls, i guess those folks are the ones that actually enjoyed it.... U certainly won't see my pic up there ever. Pros: seaweed salad Cons: slow, uncoordinated service, long wait, dingy interior, creepy backlot parking more

so much to chose from! 2/1/2008

I like this place a lot. The menu is huge and they have some things you won't find elsewhere. The price is really great, too. Some might call it cheap. But don't let that worry you about the quality. It's very good. Maybe not the best cut of fish in town but for the price and the options it really is worth it. I usually don't go on weekends as it can fill up pretty fast. I've seen lines before. But for a late dinner on a Tuesday there won't be a crowd so go on off days. I love sushi and live a five minute drive from little Tokyo but I still will drive out to Pasadena to go to Gin Sushi! Pros: choice, quality, price, big parking lot Cons: crowds, busy waitstaff more

Cheap Eats, Bad Service 1/27/2007

Their lunch and dinner specials are very affordable, however the service was below par. I don't sit at the sushi bar, so maybe the eye-to-eye contact with the sushi chef could get you better service rather than waiting for your order , a refill or your bill from the forgetful servers. On two separate occassions, they've forgotten to put in our order of yellowtail collar, even after repeating our order to us AND telling us during our 30 minute wait that it was still cooking, only to find out that they had never ordered it. When it's busy the waitresses seem to be overwhelmed and don't have an organized and logical system of which tables they are covering. Arrive early and if it's busy be prepared to wait. Pros: affordable menu Cons: service more

love Gin Sushi! 12/2/2006

This place is great! The sushi is fresh and affordable. My boyfriend who was not a sushi fan before, loves it now. We recommend sitting at the sushi bar, the guys who work there are hilarious and makes for an enjoyable evening. Best place to eat your fill of sushi. Pros: affordable & fresh sushi Cons: service can be a bit slow but everyone there is very friendly more

Good and Cheap 11/14/2006

I love tis place. I went there with a fried. We ordered all this sushi and it came on one giant plate. It was so good and we couldn't believe how cheap it was. They had crispy sushi that was awesome. there was a bit of a line but i was very happy. go early. Pros: the price! and it's good. there is enough parking around pasadena. it's past all the pasadena craziness Cons: waiting more

Okay food, great prices, fun atmosphere 9/1/2006

I LOVE Gin's beyond reason. The service is definitely not typical (you won't have a server assigned to your table; anyone who passes you will help you but it might be a LONG TIME before someone does) but if you become a regular they treat you VERY well. The sushi is not stellar (although I love the special rolls) but it's good, and you can't beat the price: $2.80 for a California Roll? Awesome. The miso soup and the green tea are amazing and addictive (I crave them both nearly daily). Pros: Good food, great price, fun environment Cons: Slow service, no ambience more

Dirty and Rude 8/4/2006

I've tried this place twice and have been disappointed both times. First off, the atmosphere reminds me of Denny's. The booths and walls are old and dirty. The staff is rude and you end up sitting and waiting forever for your order or check or to be seated. The last time I went we were sat next to a table full of small kids that were running around and throwing food. Not exactly the experience I want when I go out for sushi. And to top it off the grade in their front window is a B......that's a little scary when it comes to eating raw fish! Pros: The food is okay Cons: Bad atmoshpere, rude staff, dirty looking restaurant. more

not so good afterall 4/15/2006

I read the review on Gin sushi and decided to give it a try..turned out it was below my expectation. I ordered the crazy roll and it was only average..or I should say below average. The sushi rice was out of place. it was supposed to have masago and avocado with salmon and lemon on top but the sushi turned out to be only avocado and salmon..No massago...and Did I mention the service?? horrible..the tempura, however, is better than the sushi..I think the rate here is way over rated. it's just average or should I say below average... Pros: lunch until 3 pm Cons: bad serice, sushi out of place more

Great place to eat sushi and have a blast 2/20/2006

I really enjoyed the Crazy roll. The salmon and lemon slices were a great pairing. On the other hand we also ordered a beef teriyaki dinner and it was dissappointing. The beef and sauce tasted great, but the way they sliced the beef was odd. It's like they took a normal slice and sliced it into 3 slices to make them super skinny. And it's not a great idea for them to place it all on a huge plate. I enjoyed the servers' personalities. I heard them speaking Japanese so they are really Japanese! They were just really busy running around, almost seeming anxious. But they were all really friendly and nice. I would recommend to all. Great place! Pros: Great Prices, comfortable and roomy, Yummy Sushi Cons: dinner portion, busy waitresses more

User review by tiffyin 12/4/2005

gin sushi has become one of my favorite sushi restaurants. it is affordable, delicious, and has a great ambience. sit at the sushi bar and you won't be disappointed because you get your very own live entertainment from the sushi chefs. it is definitely one of a kind dining experience. Pros: delicious, great entertainment more

Forgetful but very nice staff. 11/1/2005

Dependable meals make up for the less-than-dependable service. The sushi here is tasty, filling, and affordable, though the service is pretty bad. Don't get me wrong, the waitstaff is very, very nice but they don't seem to know what they're doing, and I've been going here for years. Even during lunch when the place is nearly empty, it's easy for them to forget to bring the check or, you know, the food. Still, the food makes up for all of it. If you can make it for lunch during the week, the specials are great. Pros: Inexpensive, Tasty, Prompt Seating Cons: Forgetful Staff, Women's Room in Kitch more

Great neighborhood restaurant 10/10/2005

What's a ""great neighborhood restaurant"", you ask? Well, some place near where you live that you frequent regularly because it's appealing, reliable, and has good food. Gin Sushi is just such a place. One of the waitresses, Yuki, has been at this location for years (even when it had a different name and format). The regulars are just that...regular. They come often...sometimes weekly...and their pictures are on the wall. The food at Gin is abundant, good to excellent quality, and the service is generally attentive. They sometimes (often) get very busy and the service quality may drop, but don't be alarmed or discouraged. Try the place again...maybe during the week instead of on the weekend. We definitely enjoy this restaurant. You will, too. Pros: huge portions, excellent food, friendly staff Cons: crowded parking more
