I have lived in Nashville since 1974 and one of the first places locals told me to go was the Gerst House, when it was across Woodland, over near LP Field. Having moved here from ...

I Love Gerst Haus 8/7/2006

I think if you go to Gerst Haus with the right mindset you will have an excellent time and a unique experience. First, this is not fine German Cuisine, you have to understand it's the German equivalent of a burger & beer joint. That said, I have had three tasty meals at Gerst Haus, my favorites include the fried pickles & their side dishes. Best of all are the frosty ""fishbowls"" of the refreshing & satisfying house beer. I love the beer hall decor and the feeling that I'm not in Nashville when I visit, they have a live Oompah band on Fridays & you may be lucky to have that pleasantly surly waiter dressed in eye catching lederhosen. I love this place, one of my favorites in Nashville. Don't expect 4 star cuisine or even cheery service but if you appreciate a satisfying meal, good beer, a unique environment & even enjoy a little darkness in your entertainment you will enjoy Gerst Haus. Pros: I love it all Cons: none for me, I even love it's roughness more

What happened? 2/2/2006

Several years back, I visited here, had Hasenpfeffer and was delighted! It was evening, and the band playing was reminiscent of old days overseas. About 1999ish, I talked my family into dropping in for lunch during a vacation. The service was abysmal, and the food not quite on par with the service. Ive never seen nor heard of a Schnitzel made with the type of coating one finds on Long John Silvers fish...and burnt, to boot. The waiter, whom I longed to smack, did at least warn me not to expect much if I ordered German. I thought, well, it might still be OKAY. I thought WRONG, and smackable waitguy was understating. Fortunately, I substituted a somewhat-less-burnt, better-than-nothing Wurst. Those bestowing 4 Stars are either relatives, awed by decor, or have never tasted real German cooking. Once leaving here, they STILL havent. Ive since warned others away, and wont return. Pros: Its look Cons: service, food more

Give 'em a shot... 12/12/2005

Despite some bad reviews here on the site, you ought to try the Gerst. We went in for a Sunday evening and closed the restaurant (had it mostly to ourselves). It was quiet since it was empty and our server was firendly and had a good personality. The overall value was nothing out of the ordinary, but the food was good. My entree could have been a little warmer, but none of us had any complaints about the taste & quality of our meal. The only down side was the amount of time it took for our food to come out, considering we were the only ones left in the place. Pros: Atmosphere, Service Cons: Slow Delivery of Food more

Our service was horrible 10/29/2005

On a Friday night, decent crowd, the service is my biggest complaint. Not one of the 7 in my party received a refill on tea or coffee without asking then waiting for 10 minutes to get it. One person in party got food 10 minutes after everyone else. My cup had lipstick on it when served to me, we were given sides we did not order and were charged for them. 18% gratuity was added to the check and we did not know it until after we left and we had already given a nice tip to the server which was not deserved. He rarely came back to the table for anything. The music was uplifting but much too loud, could not hear each other speak. Pros: prompt seating, decent parking, red cabbage Cons: service, noise level, service more

so so 8/16/2005

The wiener scheiner which is suppose to be their speciality was tough and dry, no gravy either to help. German fries was loaded with hot pepper, they should issue a warning. Not worth the money more

chicken tortilla soup 7/19/2005

the chicken tortilla soup was the best thing on the menu. I am a true German, was born there, ate at many different places in Germany. I DO have a slight accent, but still the (very nice) waitress tried to convince us that their chicken tortilla soup was from an old German recipe. Her main argument was that it is cooked with a German kind of Jalapenos. Well, the food looks somewhat like German food, the chicken with paprika is close to the Hungarian original, but the bread is not even *close* to what you get in the cheapest store in Germany. Anyways, enjoy the atmosphere and take the chicken tortilla soup, it is REALLY good. I mean it. Believe me! more

Expensive, Terrible Food 5/1/2005

Having lived in Germany, my expectations might be a little high, but this was the worst food I've ever paid for in a restaurant, German or not. The food came out cold and congealed, the spaetzle was like dry rubber with canned gravy (COLD!) lumped on it. The only thing remotely edible that I could eat off my plate was very stale rye bread. The service was adequate (we were the waiter's only table, as the restaurant was nearly empty on this Sunday evening), and the beer selection was above average for Nashville. If you go, skip the food and just drink the Gerst beer! more

Germany in Nashville 10/16/2003

Having lived in Germany for two years I was skeptical that any place back in the ""states"" would come close to German cuisine. I was wrong! Ther Gerst Haus has come the closes! The food (Jagerschnitzel) is the best since I left Germany in 1991. And the Goblets of Gerst (although American beer) comes close. They also have a wide assortment of beer available. The live entertainment is some of the best around. Just as at a German Fest the entire restraunt stood up and participated in a huge ""Chicken Dance""!!! Pros: Live music, Food, Beer Selection more

Nashville Trips Include The GurstHaus! 5/23/2003

We would not think of coming to Nashville without eating at the Gurst Haus! We love the food and the atmosphere! Pros: Good food! Cons: Can't think of any! more

Not Very Good 5/14/2003

The extra minute we needed to review the menu was 10 minutes to the waiter. The menu wasn't all that impressive; the American menu was just as big as the German side. I settled on the Goulasch with sweet cornbread, and the spetzel was like leather. For dessert, we ordered apple strudel, which I watched the waiter take out of a freezer and stick in the microwave. I guess it's okay to do that, but the quality of the strudel was compromised so much that I couldn't even finish it. I don't think it was that good before it got put in the freezer. There were no thin layers, it was like eating apple/raisin goo with a tough crust. The focus seemed to be on German beer more than anything. It's too bad that Nashville doesn't have an authentic German restaurant with more on the menu than the regular goulasch and schnitzel. Pros: Not crowded, immediate seeting Cons: too expensive, limited selection more

Great German Food! 3/2/2003

My husband and I traveled across Pennsylvania last summer. We thought we would find some fine German food there. No such luck. The Gerst Haus has the best German food I have ever eaten! The service is wonderful! It is also fun to go when the polka band is playing. You feel like you are in Germany! Pros: Good Value, Prompt Service more
