Amazing place 3/3/2012

I've been there for clubbing in my undergraduate years and I loved the ambiance. It's very roomy with a mixture of different genres of music playing. It attracts young professionals, undergraduates, and the hip population. I would return it when I get the chance and good company. more

Worst Dining Experience EVER!!!! 12/17/2008

This dining experience completely ruined what was supposed to be a very special evening out with my husband. Let me state that I have worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and so I tend to be very understanding. To point out just a few of the many offenses we experienced: It began by waiting for 15-20 minutes just to receive the beer and glass of wine we ordered, in a half full bar. We then waited more than 40 minutes for our entrees. At no point did our server stop to explain, offer us bread, etc. We were, however, positively thinking the entire time, the reason it was taking so long, was because it was going to be an amazingly superb dinner. Sad, sad, sad. My fish, which was the most expensive entree on the menu was SO overcooked and insanely bland. We sat there for 20 minutes, looking at our uneaten food, until the server finally stopped, and we politely asked for boxes (to take the fish home to our cats). She proceeded to get a manager who came to our table, and tried in a very unconvincing way to apologize for the inadequate dinners. He left us with two free dessert tickets; which were left on the table; as you could not pay me to go back to that restaurant. Again, worst dining experience ever. A $70 tab for two barely edible dinners. If you want a nice dinner try Metro 8 across the street where a less substantial financial obligation is required, for delicious food and wonderful service. (as a side note, George's seemed a bit trashy for the $30 an entree charge) Cons: horrible service, horrible food, high prices, dirty restaurant more

great food, terrific selection, with good or miss service. 9/26/2008

I've gone to George's Garage since they opened. Once they served food during a blackout and that was resourceful. Another time I was alone at the bar making frantic calls for some emergency and the bartender was very kind and alert. On a few occasions the dinner service has been really off and the wait staff was not up to the level I thought they should be (ie very very slow and not really faking interest in their jobs which is intrinsic to their jobs, not getting orders rights or bringing condiments we requested) I just go during lunch where it is cafeteria style and forgo all the waiters don't like to wait on women thing. Pros: great food and selection Cons: service can be really good or really bad more

Great Variety 6/13/2008

We've been to George's Garage twice and took out of town guests with us both times. We were impressed by the variety on the menu since it is billed as a seafood restaurant, but it's a good thing because some of us don't like much in the way of seafood. The decor and ambience is nice and the service was good each time. The wait staff could have come by a little more to check on us and we were missing some plates, but we used our bread plates for the appetizers. People in our group ordered lamb, trout, pasta, and filet mignon and everyone loved what they ordered. Their chocolate mousse cake was also excellent. more

Terrible service all around...very sad 6/3/2008

I have been to Georges a bunch and always usually go for drinks or sushi. But last Friday 10 of us girls went for a girls night out on my recomendation. We were seated promptley but had to wait and wait and wait for a waitress. She finally deciced to get out drink orders, after that she was gone again...only to return with half of the drinks...it was horrible all night. I asked for a wine list and I waited only to see her in the corner dancing with another waiter! It was uncalled for and I felt horrible about suggesting it to anyone. Our sushi order was wrong when it got there and had to be sent back.....to top the night off the MIA waitress shows up with the check all together. Did she think 10 girls were all paying together..some of us had cash, some had cards. When I told her in a very nice way we had to make a movie and we wanted our checks seperated she snatched the check out of my hands, rolled her eyes and told me she had other tables and it would take a while! I was highley upset by now....the assistant manager came over and split the checks up only after we all had to write our orders down on napkins! It was truley horrible! Though they have good drinks and sushi..its not worth it for the terrible service, Just go to kanki for sushi and drinks and save your self the hours of waiting and bad treatment. Pros: good sushi Cons: the worst sevice Ive ever had more

Good food but expensive 5/14/2008

This is my second time going to George's Garage. When I went almost a year ago, I really liked the food. But what impressed me was the service. We were greeted very quickly when we got in and they saw on the reservation that it was our first time there. The waitress was very professional. This time, the food was still good. (But, like other expensive restaurants, the quantity is not great.) The service this time was bad. We went on Mother's Day, but at 5:00 when it was practically empty. It took the hostess awhile to even look up and longer to show us to our table (even though we had a reservation). The waiter had very little personality. In terms of food, we liked everything except for the cheesecake which was way too sour. Seems like they left out the sugar by accident. The food is rather expensive. I suggest getting a coupon at restaurant(dot)com. Pros: Good food Cons: Expensive more

Long wait for wrong order 3/1/2008

My boyfriend and I went to dinner at George's on Friday night. After we were seated, it was 15 minutes before we were greeted. On top of that our waitress was hardly tentative, we only saw her twice during the whole meal; the first time was to take our order and the second was to bring our bill. My boyfriend ordered the New England Clam Choder and rainbow trout. The chowder was very salty and the trout lacked favor. I ordered the Ahi tuna entree and received the Ahi tuna appetizer. I would have asked our waitress to correct my order, but we never saw her. For the cost of the dinner, between $18-$22 per entree, I would go else where. Pros: downtown durham Cons: noisy, slow service, cost of meal more

George's Rocks! Great food, Great sushi, great service! 2/19/2008

Bad Expensive Sushi 2/17/2008

This restaurant has a nice decor and very good entrees , but stay away from the sushi. It was by the far most expensive I have seen in the triangle and certainly no where near the best. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Poor Service and Sushi more

Yummy food but head to the bar! 11/11/2007

George?s Garage is one of the many Giorgio?s Hospitality Group restaurants. This one is similar to Spice Street in that it?s a mix of sushi bar, lounge area, and main dining room. The lounge looked cozy, with warm, dim lighting, and I was quickly saddened that we chose to sit in the dining room instead. It was garishly bright. I felt like I was in a warehouse with bright yellow walls that was populated with families who wanted to see and be seen. So, if that?s what you like, you should really check it out. Pros: Tasty & pretty food! Cons: Warehouse feel in main dining room. more

I hope things improve. 10/17/2007

I went to George's a couple of times and thought it was mostly atmosphere with some good (but not great) food to enjoy. You pay for the atmosphere and can enjoy a little snob appeal. Normally I'd say it's worth at least 3 stars had it not been for last time I was there... Keep in mind the last visit was New Year's Eve at the beginning of 07... But I figured maybe something's changed. I hope so. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Big sanitation problem in sushi bar more

Poor service, an old waiter is discriminator... 9/5/2007

I came to this town on business trip from NY and heard about good reputation for this restaurant, so I picked here for my dinner. I had a seat but waiter had never shown up. I think my seat was an area for middle-aged waiter and he seemed not to want to take my order. Another young waitress realized it, and she took my order on behalf of him. Food itself was not bad, however it was definitely terrible experience for me. How poor he is to live in such a small world. He should live in NY, so he could realize how the world is changing, hopefully? more

The sushi is amazing 5/11/2007

George's Garage is truly one of my favorites. I must say though that the sushi is the best. Not only is it the freshest, but the man behind the sushi (Alex) is among the best. My wife and I look forward on the weekends to enjoying a relaxing evening of good drinks and great sushi. Pros: Eat in the Sushi Bar!!!!! Cons: N/A more

Missme2 1/17/2007

I tried it once and was completely hooked. A native Durhamite showed this Raleigh person a whole new side of Durham on Ninth street. I enjoyed watching the Sushi bar the guys lools as if he enjoyes his job. I have watched him make the decorations from the items at the Sushi bar. The atmosphere is always nice and I always get excellent service. It quickly became a favorite of mines! I rate it a 9 . It was so nice that I visited twice and had the same menu items all was wonderful!!! Pros: Everythng was excellent the use of the whole building. Cons: The parking space to the resturant could be better. more

what more could you ask for 12/29/2006

no offense, but i cant believe from some of the recent reviews that you could be talking about the same place. Georges is a great restaurant overall that provides more options than most. the grilled ribeye is phenomenal!!! and they have some great sushi even though the sushi guy seems a bit ""angry."" i've been there several times and love the atmosphere, this place has great energy....sometimes the bar is dead but other than that, Georges is like no other.. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Options, Parking more

Avoid at All Cost - Go to Brightleaf Instead! 12/15/2006

What a lame excuse for a restaurant! My fiancee and I have given George's Garage about five occasions to prove itself, and every single time, we were disappointed. Pros: It's close to my place, I guess... Cons: Oh dear Lord... EVERYTHING!!! more

fancy menu comes to town 11/19/2006

One of George's many restraunts in the area, George's garage is satisfying, especially for lunch. Try the gourmet buffet, but be cautious with the mashed potatoes! They are very heavy and you're paying by the lb! Dinner prices are high and the quality spotty. Avoid the late night bar scene unless you are a freshman or want to be hit-on by one of the oily older crowd mixed among them. The drinks are over priced and they have a self awareness that can be nauseating. Pros: fancy lunch Cons: poor late night more

TRY THIS PLACE! 10/1/2006

Outstanding food, dining, variety, and wait staff. We have had wonderful experiences here. You will not regret anything you order on the menu. We've been treated like family, and always hae excellent recommendations from the waiter/waitress. Enjoy! more

Delicious Food And A Nice Night Out! 8/9/2006

I have been here on several occasions, and have enjoyed everything from the sushi, to seafood, to a burger, and have enjoyed it each time... I even went to the Thanksgiving Buffet, and it was absolutely amazing... The food was soooooooo delicious! Definately the best buffet I have ever been to... Just as good as home! Pros: Delicious food, pleasant waiters, nice atmosphere Cons: Parking can be a problem sometimes during dinner hours more
