$30 haircut that looks bad and takes forever 9/24/2007

I went to the salon based on the reviews of other people and was highly disappointed. The stylist was supposed to be an "advanced level" stylist who can cut the hair in an "Hour" rather than " hour and a half". The haircut took an hour as promised, but the style was BAD and the stylist did not seem experienced at all. She had me stand up (I never ever did this at a salon!) while taking care of the length and the overall haircut was very beginner level work with a bad result. She cut my bang way too short which made the style look like two different haircut on me. They DO NOT give you a refund for bad result at all. They simply ask you tom come in again and fix the problem which I refused to do so. I would definitely pay more and go to a decent hair salon next time. This place is operated!! more

A Wonderful Salon 11/12/2006

The Advanced Training Salon is a great value for the services. Here you know the sylists have been through extensive training at the Academy, and screened based on their skills for the Advanced Training Salon. The common misconception is that they take everyone who graduates the Academy. The take the best of the best. They are going through the advavced training to become GJ stylists and work for the salons. Timing is not what this salon is about. They are perfecting an art. That can take time. This is why their stylists at the GJ salons are so good. If you want your appointments cheap and fast, try Best Cuts or Great Clips. This salon is a step down to a luxury salon. They will give you what you want, but allow yourself the time to spend. Overall a very good value! more

A little more affordable place to get a designer haircut! 9/10/2005

This place is fantastic! It's a little bit cheaper (approx. 5-10 dollars) cheaper than the actual, luxurious Gene Juarez salon entry level prices. But the Training Salon is good for a couple of reasons: If you're not satisfied, talk to the teacher!! They will make you satisfied!! If you leave, and change your mind, you can call and get a re-do, or re- touch up. They are extremely nice. In some circumstances, your service will be for free if they mess up. They have a frequent service card also, and after 10 punches, you can get a free hair cut or nail service! I've been here for about everything...except for perms. Foils, and partial foils are great. Be prepared: they do take a long time. Estimate 2 hours or less for a haircut, and 3-4 hours for foils. Acrylics are the only thing I DON'T recomment. Gene Juarez does the entire process manually, and it takes too long, unless you have tons of experience. The students here are professionals; they have already passed the Gene Juarez school, but they still lag a little on time. Otherwise, they are fantastic! more

Inexpensive "high-priced-salon" hair cut 8/17/2005

The Advanced Training Salon is a place to go to get a hair cut or color from stylists who (if they pass) will soon be working at the Gene Juarez salons in the area for double the price. The average cut or color is about $30. I like that I can get a different stylist every time I go, if I choose to, without feeling like I’ve dissed the person I had before by not going back. It’s a pretty big place and always busy. The stylists give much attention to detail and spend quite a bit of time discussing what you want and what you like with you before they start. Since it’s a training salon, a “teacher” or supervisor checks in with the stylist several times along the way to see how they are doing and keeps an eye on them at all times. It seems like there are 4 or so stylists per teacher. I like this place because of their tremendous attention to detail and eagerness to please. And it’s a pretty cheap hair cut compared to some other places in the city. However, it is also not the best hair cut you can get. If you want something simple, then go here by all means, but if you start to get too complicated or have something very specific in mind then you may be disappointed depending on who you get. more

the style of juarez for the price of supercuts 7/31/2005

I honestly didn't know what to expect when I got that 50% off coupon in the mail. I had never gone to the Gene Juarez academy salon, and I had definitely never highlighted my hair. But if you have the time to miss two buses and still get to Northgate, take a chance on this place, even if you don't have a coupon. My stylist was amazing, and offered to cut my hair for a mere additional $10. The only problem is that, as other reviews pointed out, it takes a while. I was there for about 4 hours. But I must assure you that it was worth it if you have a lot of time to spare. more

Great prices, if you have all the time in the world 7/7/2005

Over the years, I have been here a handful of times, for both color and haircuts. The stylist are licensed cosmetologists but are going through the Gene Juarez training, so the prices are less than a Gene Juarez salon but more than a typical training school. Overall, my experience has been positive. One time the foil was absolutely awful, they re-colored it 3 times and it was still awful and I went back and finally had it fixed properly. So, that was a little frustrating and I don't think I'd risk coloring my hair here again. Also, since it's a training school, the teacher has to come over and approve everything and that can take f.o.r.e.v.e.r especially if you're getting more than one service. Book ahead because they have such limited hours and weekends are packed. more
