Geek Squad Alternative 8/5/2010

At one point or another we all need computer repair help and I am no different. I found myself in need at the worst possible moment. In the middle night, when everything is closed and the night before a report is due. I called Geek Squad online support for help and was charged for the $199 virus removal service. They connected to my pc and attempted to remove the problem. After a couple of hours and a whole lot of coffee and nail biting they call me back and say there is nothing they can do. This time, the guy I spoke to had a heavy accent and seemed to be calling from overseas. And long with this and the fact they said the virus is too embedded to be removed without causing further damage and system instability. I get off the disappointing phone call and am still sweating because this report is 35% of my overall grade in this course and I absolutely had to have this done in the morning. I run a quick Google search for a solution when I find SecureRemoteSupport[dot]com who provides online services and have a “No Fix No Pay” guarantee. Wow that would be nice if Geek Squad offered the same promise. Within an hour they had diagnosed the virus and had removed it completely for $105. And best of all, I didn’t lose any of my work and my operating system was completely repaired. Apparently the Geek Squad isn’t as good at their job as secureremotesupport[dot]com is. I really appreciate their diligence on fixing my issue and suggest others think twice before contacting Geek Squad to fix their computer. more

Bait and Switch Artists 3/18/2010

The geek squad is not all its advertised to be. I have a complaint about their lack of knowledge and customer service. I have twice been into a location and each time felt like I my intelligence had been brought down a point or two by listening to the geek squad attendant dribble on about this and that. I have enough education in Computer Information Sciences to have a solid understand about how these machines work. I unfortunately am too busy in my own profession to mess with my laptop, so I thought I'd have them manage it for me. The last time I entered their store I was attempting to have them upgrade some ram and to speed it up for me. I had called prior and verified that they had the ram I required and was told it was in stock. When I arrived they said they had just sold that last pair of ram sticks that I intended on having them install. I felt this was a total lie and was told something just to get me in the doors. Then I was being pitched a sales offer on another laptop computer. Att hat point I know it was the old "bait and switch" they had pulled. I left frustrated and annoyed with their deception. And I was left to find someone else to purchase the ram from and to have it installed by a professional. Google yielded a few options and I finally settled upon Secure Remote Support. I shipped them the laptop and within a week I had it back with a personal note from the technician who did the work. He expressed his appreciation for my business and left his direct line incase I had any questions. Geek Squad could take a lesson or two from these guys. more

  • In Short
The Best Buy-based Geek Squad's expertise is wide-ranging: Trained representatives can handle everything from setting up a new sysem, installing software or creating a wireless network to dealing with more dire issues like the infamous "blue screen of death." Customers have the option of bringing their computers into a store, receiving 24-hour assistance over the phone or having a repairman come to their home (arriving in the squad's signature black-and-white VW Bugs).
