Not even close to the "Great Gatsby".. 11/10/2003

This is possibly the worst bar in the city! My friend and I planned a birthday party there a few weeks ago and it was awful! We spoke with the owner 2 weeks before to reserve the back bar and he did. We even confirmed two days before and he said everything was set up. So we get there the night of our birthday and there is another party in the room!!! He didn't even have the decency to apologize to us. He pretty much told us to just deal with it. Deal with it my a$#!! It's your job to make sure your patrons are happy and I can tell you that me and my 40 friends that came to this party will never come back again due to your insensitivity. Trust me...word of mouth spreads pretty quickly. Pros: None Cons: Rude service, Expensive drinks, Too crowded more

More like Crapsby's! 11/9/2003

I was there Saturday Night, and what a mess! My friends had booked the back room for their birthday gathering and for some reason, their reservation was not held. So the manager knew how to "take the reservation", they just didn't know how to "hold the reservation", and that my friends, is the most important part! It's the essence of the reservation! (ad libbing Seinfeld for those who aren't getting it) Oh, and, can they please get a coat check?! What a nightmare it was trying to keep all of our coats "in check." more

Recently my friend and I had our birthday party at gatsbys.The private room was great and the service was excellent.It did get a little crowded that could have been down to the fact that three members of the Sopranos were there.Overall 10 out of 10 Pros: Got to meet the sopra Cons: over crowded more

Not sure what to think. 5/5/2003

I've been to Gatsby's several times and each has been so different from the other you would think I was at different bars. Gatsby's can be a quiet, sexy place to have drinks with a date (the spicy velvet banquettes are lovely to lounge in), a nice, low-key place to chat with friends or new friends (meet over a game of pool). Most recently it has been a pretentious, cover charging monstrosity (what on earth are they charging for anyway -the DJ plays routine music, no live act except for watching the antics of the mediocre bar population). Hope that Gatsby's will strive for former rather than the latter. Oh and although they say they have late night dining, I have yet to see an open kitchen. Pros: Sexy seating, Fairly large space, Yummy specialty drink Cons: Unpredicatable scene, Uncalled for cover, No kitchen more

they rip you off 4/13/2003

I actually have never been confronted with a bartending staff as rude as the one at Gatsby's. After paying the unresonable $5 cover, and growing annoyed with the heat, smell and predictable 80's music, I closed out my tab only to be told I ordered more drinks than I had. The bartender insisted they were mine (I had one beer, pretty easy to keep record of) and was completely offensive. Talking to some friends, they mentioned similar tab-discrepencies at Gatsby's -interesting tactic- what happened to the customer is always right? Pros: sometimes good music, normal clientell, good location Cons: small bathroom, cover at door, smells like body odor more

Party ON 3/5/2003

I recently went a party at Gatsbys. We all had a great time. The DJ was great and took all of our requests. The staff were very friendly and they made sure that my friend had a great birthday party. Although it was busy we had no problem getting a drink, the service was excellant. I cannot recommend Gatsbys more highly and I will definitely be going back there in the near future. Pros: Great Music, Friendly Staff, Good Value more

Great Gatsby's 3/4/2003

I've visited Gatsbys on two occasions. After work, I've enjoyed the pool table and wide TV screen. Easy to relax...no hastle...nice few beers.. Pros: Great Music, Great Place to meet, Great value more

Avoid! Avoid! AVOID! 12/29/2002

I'm simply AMAZED that this place has had rave reviews as it is the WORST bars in the city (an opinion, I have since discovered, shared by an awful lot of people apparently). I came here recently to celebrate a friends birthday. Our group had run up a $200 bar bill. During a respite in the drinking, we were suddenly INCREDULOUSLY told by the unattractive, abrupt Irish waitress that unless we ordered another drink ASAP, we had to leave??!?!? We then complained to the owner, who said that it was his sisters rule and if we didn't like it, "we should get out". And the Irish are supposed to be an jolly bunch! We were HAPPY to go. The drinks were overpriced (12 bucks a shot?) , the music utterly DIRE and "trendy" crowd??? They were the worst kind of bridge/tunnel/frat boy types you ever saw. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Pros: None Cons: Everything! more

I went to Gatsby's on my first night in NY, all the staff were really friendly and the bar men are quite impressive. I would recommend this bar to anyone who wants to have good night, with great music and great drink. I can't wait to go back. Pros: Relaxed, value for money, friendly more

Good (though not yet great)... 11/20/2002

A group of us visited Gatsby's on its opening night and it was, predictably, something of a mosh pit. Since then, it has quietened and mutated into a more comfortable, albeit somewhat pedestrian, bar. The decor is nice enough and the range of beers decent. The bar-staff are friendly enough and attractive enough to satiate my single friend's needs. It's never going to be the hot-spot of Manhattan but for a pleasant week-night haunt or place to kick off a night of debauchery, it hits the mark. Pros: Good location, Easy to get a seat more
