Dirty 2/25/2008

My husband and I went to Gasho in Hauppauge on Feb. 22, 2008. We both have worked in the restaurant industry, albeit on the corporate side, and have a good working knowledge of restaurant cleanliness - this place was the antithesis of clean. The restrooms were dirty, which is the first sign of a mismanaged restaurant. The floors displayed a dozen or more green peas, used chopsticks, dirty baseboards, etc. Nothing had been cleaned from the previous guests, or several previous guests. Then, we had the unfortunate experience of sitting directly next to the chef and his cart. The carts of food were disgusting... bowls of vegetables mixed with raw eggs were stacked on top bowls of raw chicken (God only knows where they have sat the bottoms of these bowls which were directly touching our food). The bean spouts were overflowing on a metal plate and it was stacked on top of the cleaning cloths for the cooking surface which were on a similar metal plate, inevitably some of the sprouts were touching the rags. The utensils had food on them when the chef arrived, not cleaned from the previous table, and when not in use the utensils were placed amongst printouts of orders (several tables worth). A few other things worth noting.... My husbands chopsticks were moldy - no joke, green mold. When a piece of chicken or steak fell on to the table (not the cooking surface) the chef picked it up and placed it on the person's plate and the edges of the table closest to the cooking surface were old and dirty. The desert menus were greasy and had food particles on them. As far as taste goes, the food tasted alright, nothing fabulous. However, it is no surprise that both my husband and myself were sick that night from our dinner - I won't go into detail on that. Needless to say we won't be returning. more

Gasho Gets my Vote 10/21/2006

Tucked away on the outskirts of Roosevelt Field Mall is an authentic Japanese farmhouse transported from its native land. It serves as the home of Gasho, a Japanese hibachi steakhouse. For the second time, I visited Gasho of Japan with my mom and my grandparents on 6/15/06. When we entered, we got a seat at our hibachi table. A friendly Japanese waitress took our orders. My mother just had a salad, I shared a Samurai Combo for 2 with my grandma, and my grandpa had steak and scallops. First, everyone but my mom got the Japanese Onion Soup to start out with. The soup was mellow and comforting. Salad came along with our soup too. Unlike Shiro or Benihana, the salad greens and veggies were fresh and crisp. Next, our chef came out to cook and pull some tricks out of his hat. Unfortunately, the chef didn't light the grill on fire or perform the Onion Volcano, but he tossed a few veggies into my mouth and sang a Japanese version of We Will Rock You, so those other tricks made up for the lack of the fire trick. Next, we all got our hibachi meals. My grandma and I thought the filet mignon was juicy and cooked just right along with veggies such as broccoli, mushrooms, onions, and zucchini. The chicken that was also on the Samurai Combo was seasoned just right and tender. After we ate our main courses, I mentioned that it was my grandparents anniversary. Our waitress and friendly manager, Milly, brought out two bowls of ice cream(*it's included with the Samurai Combo*), one with candle and sang "If You're Happy and you Know It" in Japanese. All in all it was a good anniversary celebration. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was slightly disappointing. This was due to cramming all the hibachi tables together. Otherwise, it was peaceful with Japanese music playing in the background. All in all, Gasho is a better choice for hibachi than Shiro or Benihana due to warm and friendly people and better food. more

Great food right before your eyes. 1/30/2006

Gasho has delicious Japanese food and the prices are reasonable as well. Ths wait staff is very friendly and they cook the food right at your table which is always fun to watch. The portions are huge, so you're better off sharing a few dishes with the whole table. On the weekends there can be a wait, but it is worth it. more

Great Japanese Steakhouse 8/10/2005

Gasho of Japan is amazing. It is worth the long wait. They have fabulous soups, but best of all THEY COOK THE FOOD IN FRONT OF YOU! This is THE place to be on a saturday night in Hauppauge. I'm not sure where you would ever be able to find better Japenese Fried Rice & Food besides Gasho. Keep your cars locked though, some cars have been robbed there. more
