My favorite Chinese Restaurant... 8/29/2010

...and it may well be my favorite restaurant of any kind. If you don't enjoy the food here, it's probably because you ordered the wrong thing. The hosts, Gary and Margaret, work tirelessly to make their customers happy. The kitchen is especially good at adapting to special requests so if what you want isn't on the menu, they can probably make you happy. I love their fried rice, their won ton soup, their steamed fish with ginger and onion, their Sesame Chicken...heck, I like just about everything on the menu and many things which aren't but which they make up for me special. They're also lightning fast about delivery. I've eaten Fu's Palace food (delivery and dine-in) and average of once a week for at least eight years. I have nothing but praise for this establishment. Do you get the idea that I like it? more

Not Like East Coast Chinese-Comperable to Twin Dragon 7/26/2009

After dining at Twin Dragon several times unsatisfied, and googling 'east coast style Chinese food' to see Fu's turn up at several sites like Yelp and Chowhound, I decided to give it a shot. (I've been trying for 3 years to find a place with 'eastern' fake, greasy Chinese here in LA; crab rangoons, pork fried rice that looks brown, chicken fingers, big egg rolls, crispy wings, scallion pancakes etc...Its just not gonna happen) Pros: *They have scorpion BOWLS, not the single serving ones like at Twin Dragon. It doesn't come in a volcano bowl, but they do light a lime on fire and float it in the middle. It was good and packed a nice sting, though a little pricey ($16). The cheese wantons (no crab) were pretty good, but it had chopped scallions in it, giving it a totally different taste than what I was hoping for. At least they weren't sweet like other places. Pro/Con: The PuPu Platter looked excitingly familiar on the menu, but upon arrival, it left much to be desired; The fried shrimps were ok, but in panko flakes, not the weird puffy fried batter I'd been searching for. The beef on a stick was rubberized, gelatinous mystery meat, and very thin & slimy. The spring rolls were hardly stuffed, but edible. I didn't try the spear ribs, but they looked very good-better than other places Ive seen. Cons: The pork fried rice is not like eastern PFR and Fu's was nasty. Twin Dragon's rice is somehow way better. The pork chunks were more like dried out flakes...It was just wrong. The lo mien was incredibly nasty-Twin Dragon's is better (which is hard to do, since TD is pretty gross). I'm a cook, and I know how lo mien and the sauce is made ( a mixture of oyster sauce, soy sauce, peanut oil and spices). This stuff was not made in lo mien sauce. It tasted as though the wheat noodles were simply tossed in plain soy sauce-Totally bizarre, and nasty. The beef was the same as the stick stuff, and comparable to Twin Dragons meats; weird, gelatinous, slimy and rubbery. Twin Dragon might be greasy as hell, but at least it edible if you're drunk. Fu's wasn't edible at all, even while inebriated. Conclusion: Go to Twin Dragon for dinner, or eat at home. Then go to Fu's for an edible pupu platter and good scorpion bowl. Just lower your expectations, and if you're from the NE, its time to give up. Pros: Scorpion Bowl, PuPu Platter & Rangoons only OK Cons: Lo Mein, Fried Rice are Gross more

Great! Closest thing to great NYC Chinese food in LA!! 5/14/2009

Great owners--Gary and Margaret will do anything to give you a wonderful experience. And, oh, the pork egg foo young, and kung pao shrimp, unlike anything I have ever had before. I CAN'T STOP EATING HERE! Pros: Egg foo yung, kung pao, egg rolls, people and service more

A Truly great place for Chinese Food 1/17/2009

After the demise of quality at Twin Dragon, my wife and I were on a search for a new Chinese Restaurant. A friend said to go west a few blocks and get surprised. We were, Pleasantly. Great food, great service, great drinks, and great ambiance. Pros: Everything Cons: My stomache was too small to sample everything more

Best Chinese Restaurant in LA (better than Twin Dragon!) 5/23/2008

My boyfriend and I JUST got home from eating here and we absolutely LOVED it! Chinese food has been my favorite since I was a child and this is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to since I moved to LA two years ago! (and I've been to many Chinese restaurants in LA before and always left them disappointed) \r The food and drinks were amazing, the service was wonderful, and the ambiance was traditional (which I love) and extremely inviting! The manager was really funny and nice and called us by our names and joked with us and asked us when we'll be back :) (we both said ""VERY SOON!"") The server was so sweet, she was super nice and funny and made an amazing Mai Tai (which was only $7 and came in a big glass)! The Wonton Soup was fabulous! and so was the tangerine chicken and szechuan pork! I can't wait to go back and try all of their other dishes, I just know I'll leave satisfied and with a smile on my face :) more

Fu's Palace has spoiled me for other Chinese restaurants 3/23/2008

This is my neighborhood Chinese restaurant and after eating their Cashew Chicken and Beef, Chicken and Shrimp LoMein it has spoiled me for other Chinese restaurants. I admit that I am not an adventurous\r Chinese eater, but I have tried places in the San Gabriel Valley and others, and their Cashew Chicken is\r full of celery and few cashews.\r \r The owners/hosts Gary and Margaret are warm and welcoming. The drinks, particularly the Mai Tais, are fabulous and strong!\r \r I've also been to a party in the back area and it was a terriffic space with lots of appetizers and good entrees. Check it out for birthdays etc. Pros: Parking is easy. They have their own lot in the back. more

Laziest place ever 3/9/2008

Attempted to order delivery, and rather than confirming our location first, they made us go through the process of giving our order first. After an extended conversation, they finally decided to tell us we were too far because apparently a ten minute drive is beyond their abilities. Cons: Lazy, horrible inefficient service. more

fun for greek events! 8/20/2006

Fu's is always a great place to host a greek system event. The drinks are always on the strong side- one of them is served in a clam-shaped bowl and is meant for four people. The dance floor is a bit small, but the place as a whole has more than enough room to host an event with 4 houses. more

Fave Chinese 6/24/2006

Everything tastes good. Even a full bar Reliable, casual, and crazy cheap lunches. (Grandparents really like it) Pros: menu, parking, fast more

Fab for Events 3/6/2006

This is the place for UCLA Greek events. Mr Fu is a great guy, and the staff is always willing to cut a deal for event planning and/or catering. The food is always great, and the drinks are super strong for a really low price! Be careful if you order more than one! Pros: great service, good value, great for events more

Delicious, flavorful, and friendly 6/12/2002

Food is always good. Servings are huge. Experience is great. We usually get delivery and they are prompt, friendly, free, and fresh. Not fatty like some places. Not cheap, but not too expensive ($8-10/entree avg). Pros: Flavorful, Spicy is SPICY! more
