Been using them often in the last year. Order screw ups occur about 1/3 of the time: missing items, broken eggs, bad produce, missing box, late delivery. Once when I was alone w...

Fresh Direct is Phenomenal-Outstanding! 11/21/2007

I have used the service - in Inwood - up past the GW Bridge - for more than a year and a half and I am thrilled with it. I am astounded by reviews that don't acknowledge the phenomenon that this service is. The prices are always reasonable and competitive, the variety of items (produce, seafood, meat, prepared meals, etc.) is always exceptional. The comprehensive information regarding ingredients and nutrition is invaluable. and the ease of operation of the site is so very much appreciated. I have had great organic produce, beautiful fresh local seafood - a huge variety available - i.e. Nantucket scallops, steamer clams, littlenecks, giant prawns, bluefish, creative box lunches that rocked, whole wheat pesto portobello mushroom pizza that is outrageous, exotic fruit, excellent bakery items like rosemary ciabatta rolls (par baked) and semolina loaves. My experience with customer service has been unmatchable. Any minor problem (i.e. regular avocados sent instead of the organic ones orderd), and they ask no questions, just credit your account. They were 15 minutes late - once in all that time - are always reliable - their drivers are wholesome, personable, friendly and kind. I find it incomprehensible that anyone could not be ecstatic with such an extraordinary service that offers huge variety, delivery, price and quality. This is no ordinary service - truly - it is so well organized, providing delivery of heavy cases of water, canned goods, wines, drugstore and grocery items, fabulous meats, etc. Just wanted to go on record about it because they are doing a great job! more

Good food, but bad customer service 3/6/2007

Fresh Direct does offer good food at decent New York City prices. But in recent months they have grown too big to offer decent customer service and on-time delivery. Allow me to tell my personal story to elaborate. I ordered groceries and then waited for them to come the next day. Delivery was guaranteed between 4-6 p.m. No groceries. I called at 7 p.m. Turns out the guy went to the wrong address. They said they were coming back within an hour. I had to cancel my evening plans. 8 p.m., no groceries. I call back, they look for the driver. 9 p.m. They tell me the driver had lied, he had actually just returned to the warehouse with the food. By this point I am very upset and dont want the food at all. They say they will give it to me for free. The next day they deliver the food. But they then refuse to give it to me for free. They say I got the order the previous day--the one that didn't come--for free. This order I am being charged for! I can't get them to understand that in fact this is the SAME ORDER. We are still in dispute. Basically, if you order from Fresh Direct, you are taking a basic, once-easy grocery shopping experience and turning it into something as complex as ordering from amazon.com or any online retailer. There is no direct connection, just with a giant, faceless company, and when there is a dispute, they are not willing to resolve it with a simple ''the customer is always right'' attitude but rather you get caught up in their not-so-bright bureaucracy. Basically, if you have any alternative, I don't think its worth it. more

Good experiences with Fresh Direct 10/16/2006

I have been using Fresh Direct for about a year now and can't say enough about it. I order 2-3 times a month and have always been pleased -- once a broken yogurt container caused a bit of a mess but stuff like that happens. I've never received anything rotten or in bad shape (perhaps I'm just lucky?). As far as produce, nothing in my neighborhood (which is one overpriced gourmet grocery and several horrible delis where the produce is literally rotting before your eyes) comes close. I've actually become much healthier now that Fresh Direct provides me with a convenient source of good quality fruits and vegetables. What I love about Fresh Direct is that they highlight seasonal produce -- a recent promotion ushered in apple season with a giveaway of one peck of apples with every order. Their promotions extend to all areas of the site, actually -- once every customer was given free milk and cookies. Pricewise, I consider them comparable to Whole Foods, but the advantage of having things delivered is that you can buy in larger quantities (I'd never be able to lug home a case of soda and a big bag of cat litter on the subway, etc.). There is some disagreement about whether tipping the delivery guy is expected -- some people tip, others say that the delivery charge covers that. Fresh Direct drivers are not allowed to solicit tips, but I can say from experience that if you choose not to tip (which I have done occasionally when I haven't had cash or when it's been a tiny tiny order), they are not very happy. On the flip side, whenever I've tipped (even a couple of one dollar bills), the delivery person has been nothing but sunshine. Like anything else, I think Fresh Direct is what you make of it. I supplement my Fresh Direct orders with local runs to the deli and gourmet grocery for miscellaneous non-perishables and prepared food. I use Fresh Direct for the things they're good at -- fresh, seasonal produce and a variety of bulk items. This system works well for me and I'd recommend Fresh Direct to anyone. more

I look forward to grocery shopping now 9/8/2006

I have been using Fresh Direct as my grocery retailer now for the past month. I love the website, I am amazed at the quality and selection of local and organic produce and products, and the items are delivered as promised by friendly drivers. If they ever are late - and it has happened - they call ahead and inform you of the delay. They don't do coupons but they do have great deals every once in a while (this month it's 10 bucks off your order if you order from their recipe selections...essentially just click on the recipe you want to make, then all the ingredients are automatically added to your shopping list.) I actually find I'm saving money by only ordering exactly what I need, and not getting distracted at the stores. Shopping from Fresh Direct has saved me time and money and I highly recommend them. more

Very fresh meats and great delivery! 1/5/2006

Fresh Direct's prices are comparable to the higher end supermarkets in Manhattan. It was great when they first broke into NYC and were offering rebates on the first and second delivery. I did hear some really scary stories about one of their deliverymen threatening a customer (he was since fired) after he delivered groceries there. However, have had no problems myself and delivery is on time and polite and groceries are packaged well. I have been very satisfied with their meat, wish their prepared foods tasted as good as they look on the web site. more

I trust Fresh Direct 12/16/2005

I've seen a lot of bad reviews of Fresh Direct on Chowhound but I've been very happy with my experiences. Yes, the food is very fresh, the selection is good, and the delivery is very reliable. Their website is generally user friendly, but you may occasionally not find a product you want (they are continually adding things) Prices are not any higher than what you find in the supermarket (at least not in NYC supermarkets) and the quality of their prepared foods is generally good (but you need to experiment to find what you like; there are definitely a few duds among their selections). I have had a few problems, mostly missing items. When this happen you just need to use their online response form; they have always credited my account within 24 hours. They seem to be trying very hard and I think they do a tremendous job, given the logistical complexities of what they are doing - delivering huge amounts of food all over NYC in every weather/traffic condition. So I give the a big thumbs up. more

Convenient but ..... 9/18/2005

Fresh Direct is a very nice super market service but I woud not be praising as much as my fellow reviewers. Fresh Direct is pricey by all standards except for Manhattan - the service however is reliable except that produce quality can really be lacking - too many times, I have had too call to complain about awful pieces of produce. Too there credit, they have redunded the price but is that worth a $4.95 fee plus premium pricing of their food- it is not in my opinion more

Home-delivered groceries are changing life in NY 9/17/2005

OK, I don't order from Fresh Direct a lot (some friends do), but the couple of times I've done it, the prices have been decent, the quality of fresh food good if not great, and the variety of products excellent. But what truly shines with Fresh Direct is their delivery policy: they deliver within a two-hour window of opportunity! Given experiences with various utilities, we're used to waiting around for four hours or more. Fresh Direct cuts that in half. If only others would follow them... more

Revolutionizing New York shopping 8/20/2005

Fresh direct provides the best delivered groceries in the city. A sophisticated website makes shopping easy, and the delivery is extremely reliable. The only caveat here is to pay attention to prices--for while they beat grocery stores on most things, there are items here that are overpriced. All in all, beats shopping. more

High Praise from a High Priestess of Food 3/24/2005

We've become huge fans of Fresh Direct. And given who my wife is, that is high praise indeed. Tina is serious about good quality food, and she is serious about getting good value. In our pre-Fresh Direct days, she used to regularly shop at 2-3 different stores a night to make sure she was getting the best value. Now, we generally just do Fresh Direct. The food is the same quality as the higher end New York grocery stores (e.g. Grace's, Fairway, Whole Foods) and the prices much better (even including the $5 shipping charge). Even the produce and meat has passed Tina's exacting standards. We strongly recommend them. more
