Well kept secret bakery 4/23/2010

This is a well kept secret in town. A friend took me here a long time ago and now I stop every so ofter to relax while having some coffee and a pastry. I love love love their cream filled horns! So nice and light, flaky, just perfect...remind me of my childhood eating cream horns with my grandma. Everything is fresh and the bakery has that old neighborhood feel you don't find everywhere. Owners Jean Louis and Jean Robert (french names), are Chinese brothers from Madagascar -unique combination for a unique place. The brothers have been running the bakery for 26 years, and somehow managed to keep the cozy feel of the place through the years. You must try one of everything here! Pros: Old neighborhood feel Cons: No on-line menu more

Authentically French in taste but authentically Houston in e 3/31/2010

The French Riviera Bakery epitomizes Houston in so many ways: a Vietnamese-owned bakery, staffed by Mexicans, hailed by local Venezuelans and Argentineans to be from there, magically churning out authentic French goods far beyond the quality that should ever be expected from a strip mall. I love you, Houston. Their croissants, hailed by many as the best in town, are exquisitely French, characterized by the alluring puff you get as your mouth dives into their butter layers. Only achieved by the meticulous folding of butter into the dough layer upon layer, this is truly a thing to be appreciated. In a world of dense and doughy croissants, French Riviera perpetuates the art of flaky. I suggest ordering their croissants as a sandwich, layered with generous servings of ham and cheese and then lightly toasted. If breakfast or dessert are more your interest, then indulge in an almond croissant for a rich, almond paste filled treat that tastes nothing like the almond extract flavored imitations you have likely had around town before. They are rich, but the espresso bar is well prepared to help you take in the sweetness interspersed with the perfect pairing of sips of bitter espresso. Ambiance is not the attraction but the inside café is cozy enough. The location does allow for far more affordable prices. Just don’t expect it to feel anything like the actual Riviera. That sensation is solely reserved for when you close your eyes, take in a bit and let your other senses take over. Pros: authentic croissants Cons: its still a strip mall off Chimney Rock more

Best Croissants in town 5/8/2008

Love how cozy this place is. Always clean, always good service, consistently good food. Nice owner who's always there. Very good coffee when they make it right, sometimes it's too weak, but mostly it's good. The croissants, however, are superb. My favorite is the Ham and Cheese, but the one with chocolate inside reminds me of the typical French snack item. I highly recommend this place for a nice start of the day. Pros: coffee, croissants, cozy, quaint, charming Cons: none more

Best Fresh Breads! 11/24/2006

Ride your bike there, and enjoy breakfast or lunch! The sandwiches are prepared fresh, by very nice staff. Fresh breads, and cute little cafe Bistro style seating takes you back to Europe. The bakery offers a large assortment of goodies; croissants, french breads, baguette, little cakes, salads, sandwiches and lovely cafe au lait! It?s clean and sweet! Pros: The freshly baked breads! Cons: busy traffice street - be careful if you are on your bikes! more

Love at First Sight 11/19/2005

I went into the bakery and immediately was comfortable and relaxed. There was peaceful music and light conversation going around. It's a cute little cafe and I highly recommend it. It has the best coffee, pasteries, croissants, bread, sandwiches, (oh there is too much to name!!!!) Anyway, the service is excellent, the prices are just right, and seating is of your own choice (that way, you don't have to wait). Again, I highly recommend it. more

best coffee ever! 7/20/2002

This is a wonderful cafe to visit or just hangout. Right off of Westheimer, it is convienent for a quick latte, mocha, or just plain coffee. It is the only coffee shop that I have seen that uses Segafredo exclusively. It is just too bad this family cafe is closed on Sundays.... Pros: multiple languages, fresh daily, natural ingrediants Cons: crowded on weekends, closes at 6pm more
