History and scenery--a nice place to spend the day! 2/28/2006

For McHenry is one of the best historical attractions in Baltimore--it's reachable by car, but also by water taxi from the inner harbor. In addition to the museum, which is small but interesting, Fort McHenry's grounds are spacious and open to the public. It is located right on the water, so it's got a beautiful view. It's a nice place for a picnic in warmer weather--or just to go for a walk or a jog. more

The Inner Harbor of Baltimore is a fantastic place to visit but don't overlook Fort McHenry, located at the tip of the Federal Hill part of town. The easiest way to get there is by water taxi. It only costs $8 for an all-day pass on the water taxi but if you plan on seeing things in the Harborplace area go for the $18 ticket which includes not only the water taxi day pass but also admission to all the ships (Constellation, Torsk, Chesapeak Lightship, etc.). The water taxi leaves you off at the dock where you board a bus for a short (5 minute) ride to the fort. Upon entering the reception building it will cost an additional $5 if you want to enter the actual fort. While you may walk around the surrounding area that includes live re-enactments of day-to-day life (mess tent, drills, etc.), the small fee is more than worth the experience of being inside the actual fort. The main focus is, by its sheer size and beauty, the 13 star flag on the pole that is situated exactly where the inspiration for Francis Scott Key's "Star Spangled Banner" once flew. Not only can you go into the re-created barracks that the soldiers once lived in, you also have the opportunity to see the Commanding Officer's quarters and all other aspects of what it was like to actually be stationed at the fort. The best part, at least for me, was being able to stand on top of the wall and look out into the bay and realize what it must have been like watching approaching warships bearing down on the fort. Don't forget to take a close look at the cannons and how they were mounted. more

Must see for history lovers 8/16/2005

Fort McHenry was an integral part of the Americans success in retaining control over the Port of Baltimore during the War of 1812. It was over this fort that the Star Spangled Banner was flown, which Francis Scott Key observed from a nearby ship and subsequently wrote the national anthem. The Fort is an amazing experience for those interested in history and/or wars. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to share their knowledge...people who attend should take advantage of them. They are able to make the history of the fort come to life! more

Oh say can you see... 8/4/2005

It's hard to believe that this is the place where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the song that would become our National Anthem. Admission is free, as is parking. You can walk around the actual remains of the fort, and see where all of the cannons would have been firing from. You can get a great view of the harbor, and of Baltimore. It's pretty quiet here, which is nice since it's so close to the city. This is a definite must see for any history buffs! more

History in our own backyard 7/29/2005

Fort McHenry is both an historical landmark and a gorgeous place to visit. Go during good weather so you can walk the grounds leisurely and really appreciate it. The film at the fort gives an interesting and accessible history of its importance - it really makes you imagine the battle of 1812, when the Star-Spangled Banner was written. The tour is especially great for kids. more
