Fornello Trattoria

My first time at Fornello was last night for a girls' night out dinner. Our waiter was very attentive and had a good sense of humor. The entire waitstaff, even including the bus boy, were wonderful and friendly. The atmosphere was cosy -we all thought it would be a perfect date restaurant. The food? PHENOMINAL!!! My favorite: fried calamari (very lightly battered - the best in the city), cappellacci di zucca (I COULD EAT THIS EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!!! pasta filled with butternut squash, pine nuts, in tomato butter parmasean sage sauce - devine!), and of course lemoncello. There must be something in the very air crystals here that creates an especially relaxed and comfortable environment for me, although the food is wonderful too. I usually begin with the Portobello mushroom appetizer, delicious although not an appetizer of bigger portion. But the sauce they use with this is so tasty. Its good with bread and great with pizza. So save your sauce if you order pizza. For an entree I like the tuna mixed with pasta. Although its not on the new menu, you'll have to ask the waiter for it. And the cappuccino is scrumpdillyicious! The wait staff is friendly and attentive and I think everyone would find the golden Tuscan look here quite pleasing. The other reviewer complained about take-out but I've never done take-out so I cannot comment. But my food has always arrived hot and tasty regarding the delivery service. Fornello here I come... ...but beware if you're getting delivery or carry out. It's hard to believe the dining room and carryout sides of Fornello are served by the same kitchen. While everything I've ever eaten here has been hot, flavorful and carefully prepared and presented while in the restaurant, the quality of carryout has been consistently disappointing. Pizza is dry and flavorless with an unpalatable spongy crust; the pasta dishes bland, under salted and overcooked with little evidence of ingredients listed the descriptions. The garlic bread was the WORST I've ever eaten, far inferior to even the frozen grocery-store variety. More puzzling is the fact that service at the restaurant is attentive and prompt, while the carryout operation regularly botches orders badly and doesn't finish orders on-time. In the end, I recommend Fornello for a nice, casual dinner out, but go someplace else if you want to eat at home... Pros: Good dine-in service, Good dine-in food Cons: Terrible carryout more
