Best

I love this store. The people are friendly. I agree the little dude is slightly creepy but we all have to work right? They have a wonderful selection of anything you need at leas...

Worst

An African Dwarf frog of mine had a fungus and I called around to several stores for help. Family Pet is close by, so I tried them. Unfortunately, they prescribed me an antibiotic...

Great store and staff 2/20/2009

I love this store. The people are friendly. I agree the little dude is slightly creepy but we all have to work right? They have a wonderful selection of anything you need at least like 25% cheeper than other stores. Gravel for fish tanks and decorations are 3 to 4 dollars cheaper. They all seem to really know their stuff on fish and the dogs they get are always really cute and they come and go quickly. that's good. They do have a wonderful rodent selection. And a great selection of fish and fish supplies. Also I have bought 6 fish from there and nevr had one problem guy with the frog who knows what his water conitions were. lots of larger fish and very reasonable prices I paid 1/2 at their store for a fish I did elsewhere. It's a small local owned business what more can we ask for. Pros: They trim dogs nails there for a fair price Cons: Lots of odd items from books to small dog clothes that just didn't fit in more

Great Place for Fish 10/25/2008

This pet store, if you're looking for fish, is superb. I stock my tank with primarily aulonocaras, and there's typically a good selection. The prices are low and again, the selection is very good. The owner also gave us excellent advice about saving $$ on frontline dosages for our pets. The store isn't perfect, but I disagree with the reviewers below about the store being dirty, ugly, weird, etc. I ALWAYS go here for my fish. I always get a good selection and I always save a lot of $$ and the owner and his employees are always polite to me. I've tried a couple other fish stores in the past few years, and the prices are typically double or sometimes triple (or more) for the same fish. No, it doesn't look like Petsmart inside, but who cares when you're getting great deals and good service? Pros: excellent selection of fish and prices are the best in town Cons: not as pretty or perfect inside as petsmart, but who really cares? more

Best source of feeder rodents in town 7/12/2008

I own 2 finicky ball pythons that refuse to eat anything but gerbils (their native food). This is the only place in town that will sell them as feeders. Any good pet store should sell food for any pets that they sell. Most stores in the Portland metro area don't, that isn't a problem here. No it isn't a beautifully layed out store but they have a great variety of supplies for all animals from exotics to your typical pets. Other reviews mentioned a creepy vibe, neither my wife or I have ever experienced that here. The staff are happy to help you when asked and leave you to shop otherwise. Pros: variety, feeders, no nonsense staff Cons: crowded more

Dirty animals, unfriendly staff, but some nice fish 6/6/2008

When I drove up to this store, I saw something small and black creeping across the floor. I'm pretty sure it was a small domestic rodent. The store is cobwebbed and crowded... like the other reviews say. I ventured to this store for the fish. On my way back to the fish corner, the little black thing creeping turned out to be a rodent that rhymes with house. She was a cute little thing and seemed half tame.I bent down, she stopped, and I scooped her up into my hand. I brought her up to the counter and the two men seemed more irritated than anything. The shorter, larger one didn't even say anything. He just got the animal out of my hands.\r \r Back to the fish corner. There are about five two sided aisles full of fish. The fish are reasonably priced and seemed fairly healthy; save for the dead ones. There were only a few dead fish and the store had just opened, so they could have died during the night. If this store kept only fish, I would give three stars. If they employees weren't weird and slightly creepy, I would give 4. Sadly, they sell other animals than fish.\r \r There is a wire cage cabinet padlocked closed. Inside are several small cages with way too many birds. Its dark and dirty in that cabinet and it looks SO DEPRESSING!!!! I would rather die than be one of those birds.\r \r The rodent tanks are full of rodents. Many were showing signs of upper respitory conditions. Most of the rodents had hunched backs and untended fur. All the rodent cages were dirty. I don't know if they hadn't been cleaned for the day or if they were just so overcrowded a day's worth of waste stunk so bad. I was gagging.\r \r The worst was the puppies and kittens. They smelled even worse than the rodents. I had to hold my breath and leave. The conditions the nonfish were kept in were unacceptable. Pros: Lots of inexpensive fish Cons: Dirty inhumane conditions and weird unfriendly employees more

Bad Advice on Aquatic Frog 4/3/2008

An African Dwarf frog of mine had a fungus and I called around to several stores for help. Family Pet is close by, so I tried them. Unfortunately, they prescribed me an antibiotic tablet which, when I used it as they directed, made the fungus worse. I had always assumed Family Pet specialized in fish and small aquatic animals, but apparently not! Pros: Lots of fish, which seem healthy to look at them. Cons: Bad customer service. more

Cramped, Unorganized and with BYB dogs to boot! 1/6/2008

I make it a point not to support pet stores that support back yard breeders or puppymills. So when I received a gift certificate to Family Pet Center, I was very excited to support a local business.\r \r Upon entry in to the ""store"" one thing crossed my mind. Too much items and not enough space. There were products in piles to the ceilings, the ones on top were covered in cob webs. \r \r Then when I was looking for the cats stuff, I found that there was no way to tell what was what. Some was on the floor on one side, then on the shelf on the other side of the store. I was so frustrated looking for items, that I was ready to leave.\r \r I stuck it out enough to walk in the back to see some very sickly puppies in tiny cages with a sign that says ""Choose your dog carefully, no refunds or exchanges!"". They were selling skinny puppies who received their first shot, who looked as though they needed a check up from the vet ASAP.\r \r As I was walking out, I saw the bird cages which seemed to be covered in lime (?), or some white powdery substance. I kept walking. \r \r While I was there we over heard the owner tell someone very gruffly ""This is a pet store, not a zoo!"". We couldn't believe he had spoke to a customer so rudely. \r \r Poor service, dirty cages, puppy mill dogs, un-prganized store are some of the reasons why I won't be stepping foot in there again. Pros: On glisan, accesible, large amount of fresh water fish, good stock Cons: Dirty, puppy mill dogs, poor service, unorganized. more
