Boring and Bacterial 9/21/2011

I'm new to Brooklyn and went tonight after work to meet a friend who has been there before. I arrived before my friend and found only one other customer. When I joked about this to the bartender his response was ""it's only six o'clock"" but his tone was not warm and fuzzy at all. Well pardon me Mr. Attitude, but okay. Then as I ordered my drink, he removed a piece of fruit he'd had in his mouth (lemon?) and squeezed three juicy little pits in to his fingertips and threw them away. He then grabbed a bar towel and wiped off his hands before starting my drink. This was disgusting behavior to begin with and any food or drink service professional would know to wash their hands well before continuing to serve. I debated saying something as he made the drink but instead just told him to skip the twist - I didn't want anything he'd touched in my glass. As I drank it, I watched him cut up the rest of the evening's lemon and lime wedges which he handled freely - in fact excessively - still having not washed his hands after the pit incident and handling my money. I won't even elaborate any more on the snotty attitude of this bartender or the lack of charm in this place. While my friend and I were there a few apparent regulars arrived to whom the bartender issued a hearty greeting. Perhaps he should share that same warmth with potential NEW regulars as I might have become but instead I am certain I'll never return. more

Best gay bar in NYC 12/13/2009

The crowd here is no attitude and friendly, which is why it's so easy to get laid here. Great place in the summer, since they have a garden in the back. Pros: Great jukebox, super friendly staff, cute guys more

GHETTOY attitude bar owners & bartenders 4/26/2008

This place should be shut down for what they do to customers. I've seen polices breaking up the fights and other things...... Cons: attitudes of bartenders & owners more

Fight Fight Fight 4/6/2008

This place is a wild mixture of mind numbing boredom or freaking bar room brawls. There was a glass smashing, rolling out the front door fight last night. It continued on the side walk with the bar staff beating down a patron, said patron coming back half an hr later and threatening to smash down the glass front door. Needless to say there was much clutching of pearls going on all night. Pros: There's always a different vibe Cons: Sometimes the vibe is Fight Club! more

Fun At Times 8/23/2007

This place can be fun. Yes, it's cliquey but what gay bar isn't? Pros: Local. Great for stumbling home from Cons: Jukebox has NO Madonna!!! more

Eh, its okay 8/8/2007

Cliquey. bad choices in cd jukebox. Fair priced drinks. Bartenders are okay though.Used to go here more often with my boyfriend in 2003 2004, but we found better places in Manhattan. My advice, keep it moving! Pros: location is cool Cons: some mild attitude on weekends more

VERY TACKY, AVOID!! 6/8/2007

Avoid this bar, because bartenders are rude and inconsiderate. Not to mention the tacky decorations in the back! Go to Bar Reis down the block. Cons: Rude bartenders, tacky decorations more

most intoxicated and rude bartenders 4/22/2007

Unless coked up, agressive, unattractive bartenders is your thing, the Excelsior is terrible! The worst experience I've ever had. Will never go back. Unbelievably rude. Cons: Horrific service, waitstaff clearly not sober more

Love It!!! 1/9/2007

Love it here. Love the bartenders, the owners, the customers, the jukebox. Love it! Great fun! Cute Brooklyn neighborhood! Pros: All Cons: Parking, but who drives? more

Great neighborhood hangout 9/22/2005

Great service, outdoor deck and garden. Jukebox is always really fun. great place to hang out with friends and to meet new ones too. more

Laid-back gem 7/13/2004

I first visited Excelsior about a week after moving to Brooklyn from Chicago. What a joy! Low-pressure, friendly and attractive atmosphere. Bartenders without attitude. The West Village has its attractions, but I know where to go to relax. Pros: Friendly clientel, Friendly staff, low-pressure fun more

Neighborhood bar done right 9/26/2002

Excelsior is a great neighborhood bar. I've met the owners and found them both charming and friendly, and the same can be said for all of the bartenders I've encountered. The clientele is friendly and chatty, the drinks are rather good, and the jukebox is wonderfully eclectic. more

A BIG 10!!!! 8/1/2002

Great neighborhood bar. Been going there since it opened. Brilliant, friendly bar staff. Great deck and garden. A true haven from the ""Manhattan Scene""!!! Great juke box, good crowd. more

Solid Neighborhood Standby 5/14/2002

This is a great neighborhood bar. Certainly not as cruisey as Manhattan bars, but it makes up for the lack of high-powered scene with friendliness, lots of space, and a very nice garden out the back. more

Wish the girls were here 5/12/2002

Excelsior is definitely the prettiest bar on the block--if only more ladies came here. The crowd was more mixed when it first opened, now it's almost all men. However, the drinks are still divine, and the bartenders lovely. Great jukebox, too. Pros: Great drinks, Nice bartender Cons: Too many boys more
