excalibur comic employes are assclowns 9/8/2011

So me and my girlfriend go into this shop because I want to find some Johnny Ryan comic books and maybe pick up Ivan Brunetti's Misery Loves Comedy. I go up to the front desk and ask where I would find any of Johnny Ryan?s Comic Books. To my surprise the woman working did not know who or what I was looking for and she got on her computer to look up Johnny Ryan. I guess I just couldn?t remember any of the titles to his comics and that he wrote Angry Youth Comics so I blurted out oh I think it was Hate comics. So next thing I hear and see is this skinny ass old man with glasses and a pony tail. He resembles the socially incompetent comic book guy from the Simpsons except he is much skinnier. So this little pathetic excuse for a man that reminds me of a convicted pedophile neighbor i once had. He says in a supercilious attitude and tone of voice says ? Peter Bagge created Hate comics?. (Of course correcting me) So instead of maybe helping me out in finding out if they carried i more

amazing, if you want a comic. not a bookstore! 8/6/2008

common, how is this place in the top 5? not a bookstore. Great comic book store and selection though. Pros: comic book store Cons: not a bookstore more

Too! Many! Comics! 7/28/2008

This place is amazing! Excalibur boasts the largest back stock inventory of comic books in the northwest and, after being there, it's hard to believe otherwise. All the comics are neatly bagged and their several tables of long boxes are clearly organized. They painted and remodeled since last time I was in, adorning the place with new shelves and tables and the place looks great. The staff is always very helpful and informative. The guy working when I was there was more interested in making sure I got something I would enjoy rather than pushing whatever was ""hot"" that week. The staff are really well-versed in their comics, always adding some tidbit of information here or making a suggestion there. If anything, they were too helpful, because now I don't have enough money to buy all the things I want. I will definitely have to go back! more

its okay 8/18/2006

Pros: its nice thats it is organized alphabeticly and not by company or something like that.\r I have been to all of portlands comic stores and this may be the best.\r the prices are like they should be (the price by the barcode)and its even the same with back issues so thats convienyent.\r \r Cons:If you get a box subscription they are very strict and mess up often(they will put somthing in your box that you did not ask for and you have to buy it).\r the employies are not very polite to you.\r if you dont come in once a month to pick up your comics they get testy and may even take off your discount(if you have one)\r speaking of which takes forever to get if you are a person who doesn't feel like spending 40-50 dollers on comic books.\r they dont have variants which really stinks.\r even though i said its the best its like the best of the average.\r \r \r but thats about it i hope this helped you. more

Too Helpful. 11/8/2005

Excalibur has a fine selection of comics and graphic novels, and I'd probably spend way too much time there if the employees would just leave me alone and let me browse. They tend to sit behind the counter and wait for you to pick something up. The second you do, they spring into action showering you with random bits of useless information and invading your personal space. They typically try to sell you 40 or 50 things have no interest in. It's highly obnoxious and makes me want to avoid that place like the plague. more

Located on busy and eclectic SE Hawthorne, this is your classic underground comic store. You will find literally thousands of titles here, and while they specialize in comics, you will also find books and DVD's (the latter can be rented for 3 days for only $3 dollars, a good deal by comparison to some of the chains). more

Looking for older comics? 7/14/2005

Excaliber Comics is the Best Comic Store I have visited since I moved to Portland. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. They have a great selection of 80's and 90's comics. Their Bronze Age selection has some holes, as does their Silver and Golden Age Collections, albeit to a much greater degree. The prices are fair, but you will not find any steals. They have a great pre-order service, and a spacious, nuerotically organized sales floor. They are not Mile High Comics yet, but lord they are trying more
