ver bad service the service there is SO rude the manger also (chris) the food isnt that good for the pricve you pay, it was my best exprience so far and I have been all over the world, you shoudnt go if you want to be treated very bad! poor service and very snob they think they are making you a favor on letting you in and paying a lot of money for them trying to educating you in how to be a client! disrespected and overcharged 2/18/2008

Disrespected and overcharged, visiting chicago i set up a reservation weeks in advance and very specifically requested a table with a view as that was why my girlfriend wanted to go there,, I was told that it couldnt be guaranteed but they would try , My reservation was late 9:30 and upon arriving all windows were taken so i went along with the table i was given , the disrespect came after a window table came available i watched it sit there uncleaned for about 15 minutes then after in was reset I asked the waiter to be moved to the window table , he said he would ask the maitre de and returned quite a time later and told me no,, I couldnt believe it but chose not to make a scene as I dont believe my girlfriend would be impressed by me losing my temper and treating people harshly ,, We made the best of the dinner but were very dissapointed , when you spend more money you should recieve better treatment not worse,, I had a blast at the signature club the night before which had the best view by far anyways, We are a polite happy go lucky couple who has never be treated so poorly before,,, waiter was stuffy and snobbish ,, honestly i feel this treatment was because we didnt order wine and run the bill up ,, We dont drink alcohol and didnt feel tea would be appropiate for fine dining ,,,anyways i hope people read this and other reviews on here and stay away ,, they deserve the bad reviews on here ,, I only wish i would have looked here before going there,, in fairness food wasnt terrible, and waitstaff did a decent job but after watching the window table sat vacant i have to say the dinner was horrible and chicago has many more enjoyable places to dine. Avoid wine pairing 9/16/2007

I went to the Everest with several friends to celebrite my birthday. The food was not bad, although for a restaurant of this level I expected much more. It does not compare with some of the other Chicago restaurants of similar price range. The service was average and not particularly attentive. Again, I would expect more for a place of this type. Most significantly, we had the degustation with wine pairing and the wine selection was aweful. I could have chosen better wines to match the food, and I don't claim any credentials in wine. The most memorable aspect of this meal was that the wine selection was terrible, making the meal below average at best. I would not go back there. Good Food + Bad Service = Big Disappointment 6/27/2007

Although the food was quite good, the service at our dinner last evening was atrocious. The staff is undertrained and overtaxed. Waits between later courses were interminable. If you actually want water in your glass during the meal, best to bring your own, because the servers are highly unlikely to notice your empty glass.\r \r Although the manager indicated his disappointment when I wrote him a letter complaining about our experience (in fairness, although they charged only for our wine, not for our food---one can't ""redo"" a 25th anniversary dinner), he plainly indicated this is the best they can do and if you want to dine there, get used to it.\r \r This is all about corporate entertaining on expense account. A nice evening 5/10/2007

My husband and I took my parents to Everest when they were visitng, and our experience was quite good. Getting into the parking garage and taking the two separate elevators made us feel like we were James Bond and was a nice start to the evening. We were seated immediately, not right near the window, but close enough that we could enjoy the view. Our waiter was quite stuffy and stiff but knowledgeable.\r \r The meal was quite good. The amuse-bouche was a little disapointing, but everything else was excellent. We each ordered the 3-course menu, and each of us chose a seafood appetizer and entree. The standouts were the scallops and the peeky toe crab cocktail, and the dover sole and the grouper. The desserts were decadent, and the mignardises and petits fours were a very nice touch at the end of the meal. \r \r \r Having dined at other Relais et Chatau restaurants on the east coast, I have to say that Everest falls a little short of those, mainly for the stuffiness of the service. However, the food was well-prepared and flawlessly served. I don't know if we would go back, but we did enjoy a very nice evening. more

Overpriced and oversalted 1/22/2007

My husband and I had a disappointing dining experience at Everest. The wine list is impressive, but there is not a full size bottle of wine for under $100. I think this is a bit pretentious. I agree with the other writer who said the service was rushed. In addition, the waiters' and the ambience were a bit too stuffy for our tastes. The lighting was too bright and my husband and I sat too far away from eachother. We both had the pre-symphony dinner. The amuse bouche was excellent. Unfortunately, all that followed was not. The crab salad was extremely bland. We both had beef. Neither one of us was asked how we would like our meat cooked. It came well done. Why serve a great piece of meat well done??? The sides were extremely over salted. I could not even finish my entree. The dessert was a carrot cake. I've had better out of vending machines. Our bill came to $300.00. The food did not match up to the beautiful presentation on the plate. We will NEVER go back. I've had better fine dining experiences in Chicago (try Tru or Aruns). Bottom line, if you want to feel robbed, go to Everest. Pros: parking, food presentation Cons: appetizer was bland, entree oversalted, not romantic, lighting too bright, stuffy more

Overpriced and Drab 12/29/2006

Upon arriving at the restaurant we were brought to a small unfurnished room to sit and wait. We were offered a drink but it was very awkward. I felt like I was in the waiting room of a doctor's office. The furnishings were drap and unimpressive. We were taken to our table after about 20 minutes. We did have a great view but my husband and I sat about 2 feet apart from each...not exactly romantic. The lighting in the restaurant was very bright. One of the reasons we picked this restaurant was because it was described as romantic. Between the lighiting, the distance we sat apart from each other and the drab decor, it was not romantic at all. The service was OK but nothing special. We had the seven course menu with the paired wines. The food was very average and each course felt rushed. I felt like I had to guzzle my wine with each course to keep up with the service. After we got our bill, which was $500 for 2 of us, we left feeling very ripped off. Don't go if you're younger 10/31/2006

1st, I'm 22 and I took my girlfriend to Chicago for a special weekend to celebrate out 2 year anniversary and a fine dinner out at Everest was the icing on the cake. I had set reservations plenty far in advance and had requested a seat at or at least near the window as I was told that was half the experience. We got there and it seemed as though we were sent away to the kids table at a wedding or family reunion. We were no where near the window, yet there were plenty of open seats, and recieved VERY poor service. It took FOREVER between our courses (we ordered the degustation - NOT CHEAP) and after a while we just seemed to be waiting around for people to notice we were there. The food was ok, but not worth the money, and I've been to a number of fine restaurants. My girlfriend and I said the same thing when we left, that maybe if we weren't so young it would have been different because other guests seemed to recieve much better treatment. I'm waiting for a ""Pretty Woman"" moment when I can return after my business success and let them know how poor it was to treat young people the way they did because younger people grow up and get wealthier. A Gem! 10/15/2006

Well, my friend Theresa and I recently made reservations at Everest to celebrate her divorce, and we happened to go on the world wide web here and read some of the reviews before dinner. We became apprehensive about the experience we might enjoy there, but all I have to say is: who are these people? \r \r From the moment we stepped out of the elevator, we were struck by how friendly and welcoming the staff were, from the woman who took our coats, to the extremely handsome host who sat us. Since we're both dieting, we decided against the tasting and ordered from the regular menu. I had this risotto with snails in it, which was just perfectly done, and followed it up with the skate wing, on our server's suggestion. Now, I'm not big on skate usually, but this was to die for. Theresa had lobster salad, and then the venison, which she thought was wonderful too.\r \r While we usually eat at our neighborhood favorite, La Petite Folie, we've been to all the big name restaurants in town, and neither of us can remember having a better meal on the Northside. I appreciated that we could choose our food, rather than being forced to order a set menu or wine tasting, and we found the staff to be professional and friendly, rather than stuffy or pretentious. \r \r Maybe next time we'll get a seat a little closer to the window, but we came for a memorable meal, and our expectations were exceeded in every way! more

You deserver better! 10/7/2006

I am from San Francisco; I am living in Chicago while on a long term project. I made reservations for dinner at Everest for last night - my family is visiting and it was my Mom's birthday, my sister has a big birthday coming up, etc. Thought it would be nice to go to a ""top of the line"" restaurant here based on its number 4 rating in Zagat, descriptions in other reviews, etc. But from the moment we walked in, we knew this place just didn't have ""it"" if in fact it ever did! There was an overwhelming smell of curry which struck us as soon as we got off the elevator. The bored, stiff waitstaff lead us to to a table in the small, 1950's decorated room, which may in fact have a great view, but we couldn't tell b/c we were in the corner. A request for one of the open window tables (the place wasn't that crowded at 7pm on a Friday night..) was met with an exaggerated sigh from the host, placing a hand over his heart as if it truly pained him to say ""Regrettably, I do not have a window table for you tonight. I have tried my hardest to give you a view, I do hope you will enjoy it."" Kind of acting like we should be grateful just to have been allowed in the door. A glance at the wines by the glass revealed that the least expensive offering was $19. Least expensive Chardonnay by the bottle - $89. What is up with that? The food prices were outrageous as well. I know a place like this would never fly in San Francisco. Chicago - you deserve better if this is considered one of your top-notch restaurants! more

It was Not up to snuff... 10/6/2006

\r It was our group of three that settled into the 3 course prix-fixe menu before\r our trip to the Chicago Symphony. The setting and decor are lovely if just a tad dated\r and the service is quite excellent BUT, the kitchen is a disappointment !\r Out of the three courses I ordered, one was missing the main ingredient\r the other was burnt. The risotto was very good and creamy HOWEVER I ordered escargot risotto and I was served a risotto SANS escargot. Thats correct escargot risotto that was totally devoid of escargot. I would never tolerate such a thing normally but time was too tight to send it back. It was lovely. however the next course had disappointment to offer as well. The spaetzle which came with the osso buco was burnt or blackened which is not how this little German tiny dumpling should be. Again no time to return it to the kitchen. Dessert was spot on with a creme brule which had the perfect balance of vanilla and sweetness it was delectable. To their credit they did remove the cost of one meal, but I didnt go to Everest to get a free badly made meal. \r Chef Joho really needs to tend to his kitchen because diners in Chicago today have too many places that fire on all cylinders. \r GS Gourmet at Large Pros: Very Professional Service Cons: People in Kitchen who don't care what they send out more

Wonderful food, fantastic wine and gracious service. 6/27/2006

I felt so bad reading the few poor reviews. To the corporate person, this is no place to do a presentation. In this setting it would be the same as whipping out a cell phone and talking loudly. It is a peaceful and pleasant experience. The staff have always been accomodating with a classic style of service. I am not a fan of the decor, but my husband loves it. The view is perfect. The food is always beyond what you what expect. I am a big fan of the apple beignet, and the first time we dined there I had a Pinot Noir from Alsase that was out of this world and it paired really well with the cardamom Duck. My husband loves the Salmon souffle, mosaic of foie gras, he usually gets something different for the main course, and is never disappointed. We are both in the restaurant business and know this place rocks. Anyone turned off by one bad experience, please give them another try. Left waiting, waiting, waiting... 5/8/2005

Not knowing how long it would take to get to the restaurant, my party arrived 1/2 hour early for our 8:30 PM reservation. Understandably our table was not ready so we were offered expensive drinks to sit in the elevator foyer and watched 5-6 parties walk off the elevator into the restaurant while we waited until 8:45 PM. Coming from NYC I expect restaurants of this caliber must have a better holding area for customers. Once we were seated the view and the food were excellent, but not good enough to make us forget about our initial experience. Distasteful beginning 5/11/2004

Upon arriving at Everest, we waited in a room where pairs of chairs were set up for people waiting for tables. We were offered a drink (not complementary, my wine was $28.00 for one glass) though we waited 25 minutes past our reserved time. It FELT tacky. Two couples left. My sea bass was not notable. The story that accompanied my dish, although sweet, reminded me of the way people now use crock pots. Skip the telling of this story. I prefer to have a meal that I don't feel I could have cooked myself. Service was fantastic, but not enough to make up for the man with the EXTREME bronchial cough who was not asked to leave, or for the tables so close together that my table was bumped repeatedly by the servers. Great 3/28/2004

I took my wife to Everest for a birthday dinner before the theater and it was wonderful! We were treated graciously by our waiter (who was conversant and knowledgeable), as well as by the entire staff. The view was amazing as the sun set in the West. The pre-theater menu was innovative and the portions were perfectly sized. I would recommend Everest to anyone in a heartbeat! more

Bad Service 1/18/2004

Both the food and ambiance were good but not great. What stood out most was the service. Perhaps a list would be the most efficient way to communnicate our displeasure: 1) a bottle of wine we never ordered appeared on our check, for which we received a disingeniously mumbled ""sorry"", 2) the waiter brought us the list of wines by the glass but never came back to take our order, even when he snatched it off of the table as he went by, 3) the waiter looked at us like we had food on our chins when we asked for the sommelier, 4) he never smiled, or made any effort to make us feel comfortable, much less appreciated. Go to Trotters, it's worth the extra money. Pros: wine list, view, appetizers Cons: service, service, service more
