Great gym, in my opinion 4/19/2010

I love this gym for several reasons. The cleanliness is way above every other gym I visited (Crunch, New York Sports Club, New York Health and Racquet Club and Club H). The maintenance staff is constantly cleaning. I can understand how others might be annoyed by this, but I'd much rather have staff cleaning around me than wondering when the last time this shower/machine/whatever was cleaned. I've also found the front desk staff to be pleasant and professional. The space is great. There are several specific stretch areas and its easy to find the equipment that you're looking for. Its below ground so there's no windows, but I think the lighting is fine. I also appreciate that it never feels overly crowded (even at peak hours). I've never waited for a treadmill or bike, nor have I ever waited for a shower/""getting ready station"" in the locker rooms. The machines are well maintained - I can't remember seeing any ""out of order"" for more than a day or two. They're high quality machines (touch screens, ability to transfer workout summary via USB - for treadmills/bikes/etc)). The only thing they don't have is individual TV screens (which would definitely be nice!). There are plenty of flat screen hanging from the ceiling. The class schedule is adequate. Plenty of staples - yoga, pilates, cardio, sculpt, etc... There's a few interesting/unique ones - parkour, zen combat. I like to take a lot of classes and would appreciate a bit more variety (ala Crunch), but am totally fine with the variety available. Also, instructors have all been top notch (obviously I haven't taken every single class available). The pool is gorgeous, and one of the main reasons I joined. Actually long enough to swim laps (25 meters or close to that). Ironically I haven't actually used it to swim laps yet, so I can't comment on how busy it gets. My favorite part of the gym is the locker room amenities - its the only gym that I visited that I would have felt comfortable using the steam room/sauna. The soap/conditioner/shampoo is great quality. They supply most other basics - razors, shaving cream, cotton swabs, cotton balls, hair spray, hair gel, lotion... might be more than I'm forgetting. The down side is the price. Its definitely the most pricey gym that I checked out. It all depends on what you are looking for in a gym. Personally, working out is not all that ""fun"" for me. I go to the gym because I want to stay healthy/in-shape, not because I enjoy running on a treadmill/lifting weights/whatever. The luxuriousness and the amenities of this gym help get me there on the days that I just don't feel like going. Pros: cleanliness, shower products, space, amount of equipment Cons: price, no individual TVs on cardio machines more

Are you kidding me? Equinox and their EGO 10/18/2009

Are you kidding me? They think their facility is the best in the city. Their equipment doesn't even have individual flatscreens, they don't have enough classes for their size, their spinning bikes are ancient, no windows, and their attitude is incredibly poor. I was told I should join because a lot of celebrities use the gym. Hmmm... last time I checked, I was looking to join a gym to stay in shape. $173 a month and you can get cheaper depending on specials/corp rates to $130 but I have to tell you that both the NYSC and Club H close by are 100x better and for 50% of the cost. Get over yourselves and how exclusive you think you are. Pros: location Cons: facilities, equipment, staff, classes more

Not Overly Impressed 8/6/2009

A decent gym that has it's aesthetic appeal, however the staff is just not very friendly and there are strange spotlights all over the place that makes you feel you're in a gym/museum. Maybe just a little too busy for my tastes. Pros: Decent Equipment Cons: Unfriendly. more

Bad customer service 6/12/2009

The daycare center, classes and trainers are pretty good. While the place is clean.. it is annoying that there are ALWAYS people cleaning under your feet... in the elevator, in the lobby, under the equiptment,in the locker room! I had SEVERAL negative experiences with the membership staff. They will call or email all the time until you join... then you can't get them to answer a question or return an email. And when they do... it is with less than standard warmth. Join for the facility... but not the front staff. Pros: classes, childcare center, trainers Cons: bad customer service, constant cleaning more

Poor customer service, some negative experiences and not overly luxurious 1/16/2008

Some of the staff and really friendly. The ambience and decor are okay. I have belonged to much more luxurious gyms in other cities. I didn't really check out many other gyms in NYC, but in hindsight would recommend that anyone considering this gym checks out others as well. Pros: Location Cons: Customer service skills, ambience (there are better gyms around) more

Friendly Staff, A/C that rarely works, very clean throughout, but dangerous infrastructure. 8/17/2007

The first thing you are struck with is how beautiful the place looks when you walk in. Great looking facilities, great looking staff and everything is spottlessly clean. Then you start to use the place the the truth peers out from the crevices. The a/c rarely, if ever, works properly. It's humid, hot and unhealthy. The air is stagnant most of the time. But dont' worry, ""We're working on the problem"" the staff will assure you! The lighting is so dim you sometimes wonder if you're in a cocktail lounge. The spotlights are all pointing at the artwork on the walls RATHER THAN the exercise equipment that the membership is trying to use. The flooring in the locker rooms is very pretty but dangerous to walk on. Think oil slick. The sauna is not hot enough and the locker room is not chilled enough. . In other words, this place was made to be photographed but NOT used. It's stylish but not functional. Oh, one more thing. This place has the worst smellilng shower soap and shampoo in the history of fitness centers! Pros: Very Clean, friendly, lots of equipment Cons: Unhealthy level of air conditioning, dangerous flooring, stinky soap, poor holiday and weekend hours. more

Thats Hot! 6/7/2006

I understand why this place is the flagship, the place can turn into a night club. Gorgeous staff, celebrity clientel, always a member appreciation party...I definetly get my money worth. Pros: HOTT STAFF! Cons: None! more

Rudest Staff 3/13/2006

If you're going to charge upwards of $150/month on membership you'd think the staff would at least be congenial. more

Gym OK - Classes make it HOT! 8/2/2005

Went on a Wednesday evening and noticed a class schedule change. Took a KarateStrike class with a Westchester County instructor named Harry Otto and was blown away. Equinox has no problem paying top notch instructors to travel into the newer clubs - this I like. The Gym itself was nice but not what I expected. Worth the $140 though. Would love to see them stay open a bit longer though. Pros: Classes, Location Cons: Hours more

This is the flagship Equinox? 4/22/2005

""This is the Flagship of Equinox!"". It's just another Equinox, that's in the basement of a building. Disappointing, it's just like any other Equinox. It's obvious that they are paying a steep lease because the finish/look/quality isn't even ""minimalist"", let alone high-end. 3/4 of the club has barren walls & unfinished ceilings. Locker rooms are ok a somewhat worn. Other gyms put this to shame in a NY second. These clubs excel in detail, luxury, hipness factor where Equinox fails. It's uninspired & over priced: 500 initiation + 150/month. Hard annoying sales push! The showers are cut off at 8:45 pm on Saturday night, go figure? It does have several good classes though. Yet, it's just another over priced, very average gym-nothing special indeed. Pros: location, new equipment Cons: inflated price, baren Cheap look, limited weekend hours more

Impressive, but mega bucks 12/15/2004

OK, so I went to take a tour here. It's definitely an amazing club. Just walking there, through the new Columbus circle area, walking into the gym, all spankin new. It's phat really. So much cardio, flat screen plasmas, an OK pool. then you get the prices. It's like hello, I don't need plasmas and all that stuff, like shaving cream at each sink. all the little things. The equipment is nice, but not like gold-plated right? It's 1500 a year, so start stacking pennies (unless you don't have to, then sign up). heheh Pros: all NEW equipment, great environment, not packed Cons: , thats it, overpriced more
