Empress China--Expensive Chinese Food!! 6/12/2006

Have you ever paid $17 for Singaporean noodle, or $18 for Cashew Chicken? Well, that's the price you should expect for this high end Chinese restaurant in SF. I don't think I've ever paid that much for Chinese food in my whole life! Granted, they did have a nice view and all their waiters were dressed up in green suits, but the food itself was not worth the price. The portions were small and the taste was way too greasy! Our hot and sour soup cost us $8 for two little bowls. I'm used to paying $7 for a big bowl of hot and sour soup that feeds 6 in Seattle. I guess this is what happens when you choose a restaurant where George Bush dined at? My advice for those who are looking for authentic and affordable Chinese food? Don't go to Empress China. The food is just ok. more

good drinks in a great setting 9/1/2005

The Empress of China restaurant is 1950’s idea of fancy. It looked like it was in a public housing project, yet presidents and second tier celebrities eat there. From the pictures it looks like it used to get 1st tier celebrities until the 1970’s. It smells a little bit like grandma's house. The drinks are quite affordable and of good quality. We just went for drinks and didn't eat there. The decor makes it worth the trip. more

A Nice Atmosphere 7/15/2005

I went to this restaurant because my relatives were over and it was close by. When we walked into the restaurant, a waiter greeted us and showed us to our table. The service was okay there. The food was also okay, nothing special. However, the atmosphere and the mood of the restaurant was great. It was very relaxing. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Perched on the eighth floor of a Chinatown high-rise, this restaurant offers ornate, if a bit dated, decor and spectacular views of Coit Tower and the eastern cityscape....
