Ella's for delightful breakfast 3/5/2006

Ella’s is one of the best breakfast spots in San Francisco. You’ll mostly likely have to wait a bit for a table, but it will also be worth it. All the breakfast plates are heaping and delicious. Unique combinations like pumpkin walnut pancakes served with endless cups of coffee make Ella’s a lovely way to start a weekend morning. more

A Tad Overrated, But a Dependable Breakfast Joint 1/21/2006

Classic American food, a nice setting, and convenient for public transit, JCC, etc. Parking can sometimes be tough. Pancakes always good as are the eggs. more

Okay fine, 9/23/2005

I will admit it is pretty good, but aren't you a little tired in the AM's to wait in that long line? Sometimes I even see pepole line up in the rain! If you want a good breakfas some to my house and I will scramble you some eggs, and it won't take that long and you can get on with your day. but don't wait for hours in the rain for eggs people! more

yum! 8/23/2005

Few things can get me out of bed before 10am on a Sunday morning, and the banana pancakes at Ella's are high on the list. The restaurant gets very crowded, so the service isn't always the best.. but I've always found the food to be worth it. Also, the prices are quite reasonable. more

Ella's Restaurant 8/5/2005

Ella's Restaurant is one of SF restaurants. Right by the site of the park, Ella's Restaurant is centrally placed for guests in some of the more illustrious hotels to enjoy fine dining with impeccable service. The guest book reveals that in the past this included Stravinsky, Charlie Chaplin and Marcello Mastroianni. For those less well-heeled, be warned that the prices are steep (but check out their website for special offers). The ambience is pleasant and refined, with immaculate pink table linen and an abundance of discreet waiters. The cuisine, as one would expect, is elegant, and harks back to an earlier era when dishes were frequently prepared at the table – such as my delicious Sant’Erasmo asparagus with parmesan, for which the butter was melted as I watched. A classy version of the classic pasta e fagioli (soup with pasta and beans) was excellent. Main courses include seasonal fish (John Dory, sea bass, superb sole, expertly filleted at the table, on our visit), and fairly standard lamb and beef options. The selection of tiny vegetables (the same garnishing each dish) was a disappointment. Puddings include home-made ice cream and delicious-looking pastries, hot apple pie with pistachio sauce. The wine list is long and varied, with interesting local varieties very well represented. more

Great 8/2/2005

Ella's Restaurant is a San Francisco tradition for over 100 years. California cuisine and excellent ocean view. Two cocktail lounges, a dining room, a casual restaurant for breakfast and lunch, and a Sunday brunch buffet. The Mechanical Museum below the restaurant displays a collection of coin-operated, automated musical instruments, old fashioned juke boxes, pinball and fortune telling machines. Open 7 days The wait staff is 4 star, the food is 3 star, but there is absolutely no better view of the ocean and Sutro Baths in the city. Have a martini and a plate of hot calimari. Perfect place for a fancy date. more

best brunch place 8/15/2004

Ella's sits on the corner of Presidio and California. The brunch menu is fairly short, but everything on it is awesome. Freshly squeezed orange juice, various incarnations of breakfast classics with eggs, potatos, onions, chicken and more ... and best of all, the pancakes! They come stacked up 3 pieces high, wide as the plate, and you can have them with baked-in bananas. They just melt on your tongue. The main breakfast items run around $10. Even though I only just recently discovered it, apparently this place is no secret to others, so you may want to get there before 10am to get seated quickly, esp. with a large group. They seem to serve dinner too, but that's not what they're known for. more
