My husband and I went to Eleni's in Sellwood on Friday night at 7:50 p.m. We were promptly seated and there was no line. We ordered two appetizers - the grilled calamari and the s...

What a fantastic place 6/12/2006

I have eaten Greek food all over Greece and it is quite often hit or miss. It is clear that Eleni's buys the best ingredients. I often read reviews on this website that read like a third grader wrote them so I want to avoid lavish comments. Great feta, fantastic rack of lamb and great Greek wine that matches the food (for those willing to try something other than a fruit juice from California.) I reccomend diners with experience try it out. The waiter we had was very cordial and funny and really knew his food and wine. Pros: food wine Cons: early hours more

I wish the food was as good as the atmosphere 6/7/2006

A group of 8 of my closest friends made a reservation for 6:30 on a Saturday night. I had looked at the menu beforehand, and was excited by the variety of choices. We arrived a few minutes after 6:30, and had to wait almost 25 minutes before we were seated. This would have been no problem, but that was the reason w had made the reservation! \r After we were seated, the service was slow, but friendly. We ordered and waited for our food to arrive.\r When it did, I can't say that I was impressed. Small portions and out of balance flavors. The one thing I would reccomend is the poached pares for dessert....very good. Pros: good dessert Cons: slow service more

We'll be back 5/25/2006

We ate at Eleni's for the first time this past week. Fantastic!! Our waitress (Carissa?) was one of the best waitresses we've had in a very long time. Very helpful with the wine list and spot on with dish descriptions and recommendations. The calimari was perfect and my wife's rack of lamb was so un-lamby that even I liked it! We'll be back. Pros: Food, Carissa more

Great food and service 4/27/2006

Our waiter was the best we've had in a long time and the food was superb. I plan on becoming a regular. Great neighborhood place and real Greek food more

Great Greek 4/18/2006

Love it, even it is only 1/2 full on a Tuesday night it seems to be hopping. Food is excellent, we love any shrimp dishes, although the tszaki (sp?) is awesome. They offer a good wine by the glass selection, and are very helpful. We go often and highly recommend it. Pros: small plates, entrees Cons: parking more

What a way to start News Years 3/14/2006

As soon as we arrived for News Years Dinner we were shoved into a corner and asked our drink choice.... We were brought our cocktail and bottle of wine at the same time. Evidently the salad wasn't prepared so we were asked to have our main course first and the salad last????? We walked away with a $200.00 dinner and were rushed through it... Food was ok at best. No we will not return. more

What's with the downhill slide? 3/3/2006

I have been to Eleni's about a dozen times over several years. What's happening? This is the restaurant I was always proud to show off to out-of-town guests, especially those who knew what Greek food was supposed to taste like. Wow, were they impressed! But not anymore. It used to be that the grilled calamari was second to none. Now, it's just O.K. Dishes were lukewarm. The rack of lamb was still good, but the old reliable standby, a stuffed eggplant, was a shadow of its former self. It wasn't a stuffed eggplant anymore. They actually used a Japanese eggplant and just poured the stuff over it, because, let's be real, you can't stuff a Japanese eggplant. Sacrilege, anyway. Japanese eggplant. I dream of the perfect calamari I hope the old cook comes back. Nothing was made with the same care anymore. Even the bread tasted tough and stale. Sigh more

Dry meat and tomato sauce 11/11/2005

Kept waiting for quite a while.... Had to remind the waiter to bring us things we had ordered. The meat was very disappointing- and the tomato sauce sour. Pros: short wait Cons: service, food more

Avoid the Weekends 11/5/2005

We've dined at Eleni's several times, but the last 3 visits were disappointing due in part by overcrowded dining areas and a backed up kitchen. On our last visit 10/14, we ordered coctails at the bar & were seated at our reserved time @ 8PM. Our waitress acknowleded our party of 4 & appetisers & wine were ordered & arrived within a reasonable amount of time. But, it was downhill from there. Waters & wine ran dry, service staff was not attentive, and our main courses didn't arrive until almost 10 PM. My rack of lamb was supurb, but some of the other dishes were marginal. The waitress had an attitude & implied that Eleni's wasn't a fast food restaurant and dishes were made by order. We were with good friends and enjoyed our time together, but it was an hour between courses which is unacceptable. Pros: Authentic Greek fare, Interesting Menu Cons: Kitchen is slow, Service Inconsistant more

like being in Greece 11/10/2004

my husband and I had our first dinner at Eleni's on Halloween. We were extremely impressed with the flavors and portions. We have spent a month in Greece and the flavors at Eleni's brought us back there. A great experience. Pros: Inexpensive, Cordial Staff more

Avoid the lamb and baklavah 10/14/2004

I got the lamb special, avoiding the main course, which always runs the risk of being dry if not done right. The special was in filo dough and supposed to fall of the bone. Not! It was dry and tough. Desert was also a major disappointment. The Baklavah was hard as a rock and also dry. I won't be back. The mousaka my wife got was also mediocre. Pros: friendly staff more

Highly Recommended 5/19/2004

Elenis comes highly recommended not only for its excellent Greek food but also for setting a backdrop that is perfect for a nice evening out. Plan a night around going to this restaurant, tucked away in a quaint Sellwood neighborhood, and prepare for an evening full of great food and conversation. Because it has a full bar, start your experience off by ordering an aperitif followed by one of Elenis many tasty appetizers. Next, get ready to please your taste buds by indulging in an authentic Mediterranean entree enhanced by a glass of Greek wine. Conclude your night by ordering a cup of coffee and a light dessert. The food is wonderful, the people are friendly, and the ambience is perfect with its dim lights and quiet musica perfect setting for enjoying any type of company, especially if it is romantic in nature! Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

Coffee 4/17/2003

Good food, good service. The best part is Turkish coffee prepared by the server with traditional method. The best I've ever had. I recommend this restaurant for local people as well as visitors. Pros: Relaxed dinner, Friendly crew, Fair pricing Cons: Wine selection more

Try this restaurant! 9/8/2002

We've been eating at Eleni's for only a few months now, but it's already one of our favorite restaurants! Their food is excellent and reasonably-priced, and the atmosphere is outstanding. Try their lamb shank. It's fabulous--I've never tasted anything like it! more

TRY THIS PLACE!!!! 8/14/2002

This restaurant is so excellent! The food is yummy and reasonably priced. The wait staff is courteous and knowledgeable. It doesn't hurt to make a reservation on weekend nights. more

I love this place! 7/28/2002

My first trip to Eleni's was great! The atmosphere was warm and romantic and the food was great! The one downfall was that they ignored us for the first 20 minutes that we were there. Everyone around us, who came in AFTER us, had their drinks and bread (which was to die for!) before we were even acknowledged. I was angry and ready to leave but the server apologized. Some oversight on their part I guess. Am I ever glad I stayed! This is one of my favorites! Pros: Nice wine list, Lots of entrees Cons: Poor parking more
