Flamenco Dancers... Average! Food ... Excellent. Worth a Shot 8/17/2005

It is still amazing to me how many great undiscovered treasures LA holds. Last week, we discovered EL CID. I received an email from a ticket broker I use, and they were featuring El Cid as one of the favorites. Seemed interesting enough and with nothing to do on a Thursday night we gave it a shot. The neighborhood was gross, Sunset and Rampart. The outside of the restaurant at first glance, had us thinking we had made a terrible choice. As we walked down about 30 stairs, we were pleasantly surprised. The piano player on the patio, the cool dressed people, the free happy hour buffet with veggie skewers and wonderful salads... definitely did not expect all this. Once inside even happier. The tables are lit by candles, the decor very cool. Usually we expect average food when going to see a show, but here we were so surprised. The food was the highlight of the night. I had the Filet Mignon with Chimichuri sauce. The mashed potatoes and fresh peas were out of this world. My husband had the Paella which was to die for. Try the calamari and do not leave without trying there house specialty... the Sangria. I was a little disappointed in the show. The Flamenco dancers were average. I personally did not like the show but enjoyed the music and the food enough to want to come again. Next time we will try on a Wednesday night for Belly dancers. more

  • The Scene
Originally used as Hollywood's first soundstage in D.W. Griffith's "Intolerance," the space was later converted into a flamenco/dinner-theater venue. From the street, the weathered Moorish facade belies this subterranean gem. Shaded by heavy foliage, a white stairwell winds down to a pleasantly lit red, black and gold room with plush leather booths. Bullfighting posters, coats of arms and flamenco paraphernalia seek to replicate a 16th-century Spanish tavern, while adding a touch of kitsch value. Outside, the sprawling patio features decorative plants and festive lighting.

    The Draw
Early in the evening, the restaurant hosts authentic flamenco shows for a crowd of cozy couples and groups celebrating special occasions. Later in the evening, DJs from the rotating club calendar take over and the bar is packed with an attractive crowd from across the city. Depending on the night, the music could be any variety of rockabilly, salsa or house.
