Nothing special 7/2/2007

This is a fun place to go with friends. The place is a little unkempt, but not run-down. I actually thought the good was delicious, as did the five friends I was with. The margaritas tasted like they were made from a store-bought mix, but otherwise everything was very good. Although tasty, I'm not sure the price was worth it considering everything else. Pros: Fun and casual, good for friends Cons: overpriced more

The most disgusting mexican food I have ever eaten 4/18/2007

I realize that good Mexican food is slow to come to Philadelphia, but salsa and enchilada sauce should NOT taste like ketchup. The food was cold, even the rice and beans were disgusting. In addition, the giant groups of underage teenagers with handles of tequila in their back-packs used to spike their margarita's left a lot to be desired in the way of ambiance. The tables were dirty and the leather booths had large slashes in them with stuffing coming out. Remembering my meal there makes me want to throw-up. Pros: BYOB Cons: BAD FOOD, Dirty, Loud more

Best""Carnitas"" In Philly 4/4/2007

well i think that the food was great , but i believe that is more latin food, than mexican, well is almost the same thing . lol. ;) ""The Carnitas"" were so great omg they were so yummy mmmm mmmmm mmm, i really love them i dont think they are good, i kno they are good, i highly recomend this plate, i believe this plate is one of the most tasty in center city.if you go to ""El Atzteca"" you most order, ""The Carnitas"". Pros: Carnitas Cons: no english speaking waiter more

raging disappointment, lazy slow service 3/13/2007

we had heard great recommendations and liked the casual, informal environment. but....it turned out to be a raging disappointment and annoyance. first, it took very long to get menus and then very long to order. then, they gave us someone else's food. after pointing this out, it took another long stretch of time to get our food. admittedly, the food was pretty good - eggs and chorizo was delish, but the chicken quesadillas were a sloppy mess. and, i was given the wrong quesadilla, though i pointed to the dish i wanted on the menu when i sensed our waiter didn't understand me. then, when it came time to leave, we asked for our check 3 times and never got it. ultimately, we still never got it! even though we went up to the register to get change too! we calculated what we owed based on the menu after we had waited 45 minutes from the first time we asked for the check (and there were only 2 other couples in the restaurant). Pros: casual environment Cons: lazy slow service, food mix-ups more

Fun! And flip flops aren't frowned upon. 2/27/2007

I'd like to start by saying to all the naysayers...authentic mexican is basic, so if you're looking for a presentation on your plate, this is not the place for you. El azteca is a great little place to go for basic, heart stopping, high fat mexican food...just like you get in mexico. If you wanted to get any closer to the real deal, buy yourself a plane ticket. This place is fun and extremely casual. Go anytime, including friday nights, you're gonna wait, just like any other place that doesn't take reservations. I return often, as well as my friends, and have never had a bad experience. For those who are looking for fine dining, go elsewhere, you will find no satisfaction here. Pros: Mexican food, no more, no less more

Avoid it like the plague! 2/27/2007

This place is awful. The food is nothing special and way over priced for what it is. Soggy tacos and disgusting enchiladas. What kind of Mexican restaurant charges for salsa? And speaking of salsa, it tasted exactly like pace picante sauce. The owners son is incredibly rude and overcharged our party and when we brought it to his attention, he became extremely argumentative. The atmosphere is awful and frankly the place doesn't smell good. We considered leaving upon arriving but were starving and decided to stay. We will never go back (6 of us). Also, the bathrooms were filthy. There is way better authentic Mexican food to be found on 9th street in the Italian Market neighborhood of Philly. Avoid this dump like the plague. more

Feel the Energy. 1/1/2007

My wife and I went here on the weekend over the Xmass break and everything was great. Things started out not so great with a little bit of a wait but, the food and the energy are the reason for the wait. If you are up for it and want to feel young again then this is the crowd for you. Not only is the crowd great the food is to, and this place is a perfect example why the chain restaurants are not worth it. more

Huge Frat Party 12/2/2006

i was expecting a loud environment, but nothing like i experienced last saturday night. after waiting for 45 minutes, we finally got a table. the waiter came by to see what we brought to drink...i pulled out a bottle of spanish wine and the waiter looked at it & didn't know what to do with it. i had the sense to bring my OWN cork screw with me and he proceeds to ""try"" and open the bottle ...only to break MY corkscrew. no apologizes, he only asked if i wanted the ""remains"" of my once fully functioning item. \r while waiting for the food, i made my way to the back to use the restroom. as i waited for the ladies room, i found that men...excuse me boys, were too impatient and couldn't wait to use the restroom properly. several boys decided to relieve themselves outside, off the landing, in front of everyone! \r the food came and was totally inedible! my dining companion was sick for the remainder of the evening from the food, and we had to cut the evening short. if you enjoy this sort of experience, i suppose i'd recommend it...however not too many people i know do! i've had better food at Taco Bell Pros: the alcohol i brought myself! Cons: everything else more

good if you get there early 11/20/2006

just visited this place for the first time a couple of weeks ago. my husband and i arrived just in the nick of time. within 5 minutes, the entire place was full. there are lots of huge parties who take up like 5-6 tables at a time, so if you don't like that loud ambience (as it can get when people drink tequila) you might want to get there just a little bit earlier. the food was very good. i really liked their chips and salsa. it's byot, which is great because it's cheaper, but their lime mix wasn't anything spectacular. prices are right, though. i will definitely be going back. Pros: great prices, great salsa Cons: can get loud and crowded more

A fantastic experience! 10/25/2006

El Azteca II is a refreshing experience compared to some of the stuffier BYOB (do not forget the tequila) restaurants in Philadelphia. The atmosphere is young and fun with a crowd ranging from families celebrating birthdays (the birthday boy or girl gets a sombrero and a sparkler in their dessert) to college students downing pitchers of margaritas made with the best sour mix in Philadelphia. The service is efficient, friendly and they never stop bringing the corn chips and salsa. The menu consists of authentic Mexican cuisines that are reasonably priced for their tastiness and large portions. It is a fantastic place to start your night. Only four blocks away from Old City you can walk there and still have your buzz. So if you are looking for a good time with great food and drinks El Azteca II is the only place to go. Pros: great food, margaritas, and atmosphere Cons: so far away from my apartment!! more

Mexican Slophouse 10/22/2006

This dump serves the worst ""mexican food"" I have ever tasted. The kitchen uses\r the cheapest ingredients available and there is nothing tasty about any of it. The\r enchilada dish I was served was simply disgusting, and not exactly cheap either.\r This place is perfect for the college crowd too drunk to taste what they're eating.\r Cons: Terrible food more

Great Mexican Food in Center City 10/18/2006

Thank goodness the majority of people don't pay much attention to reviews. Beechnut, you are so full of it. First of all, El Azteca never got ""busted"" or ""closed"". That has never happened. We started cracking down on the underage drinkers ourselves, no one did that for us. As for the food, manwich? Get real. No restaurant has perfect food, and for sure not perfect customers, but we do our best. Sounds like you were one of the customers who ordered food and just didn't want to pay for it, so this is your revenge? Go write a crappy review? Puhleez..............\r \r Pros: Delicious authentic Mexican food. Large portions, good prices. Cons: having to ""explain"" that you can't drink in a BYOB if you are under 21. more

Don't go there if you have a large group! 10/6/2006

I called to try to make reservations, and the person who answered was very rude (saying I had to call back at a later time to make reservations for a birthday celebration) and he hung up on me!! When I called back, he kept picking up the phone and hanging up immediately! I have never heard of this happening before. We're definitely taking our business elsewhere! more

mixed review 7/22/2006

I've been here twice recently. The first time it was pretty good. Food was good, waitress was friendly, and a good time was had by all. \r The second time, it was like a completely different restauarant. It was overcrowded with drunk office workers, and the staff were clearly unhappy to have more customers to deal with. We waited forever for everything - water, menus, food. Apparently half of our party's dinners had sat there waiting for the other half's to cook, because some people got cold food. And the food (cold or not) was lousy. \r So I don't know. I would go back on a less crowded night, but not when it's packed. Sadly it's pretty much the only budget-priced Mexican food in the city. Pros: cheap, tasty on a good night Cons: horrible food & service when crowded more

The Experience 5/31/2006

El Azteca in my opinion does not have the best quality food. So if your craving a great taco or burrito, this is not the place to go. However, if you want to have a good time with friends and meet new people, El Azteca is the place! The waitors are so friendly and everyone that comes in, comes to have a great time. The margaritta's are amazing and will certainly help ""loosen your slacks."" ps: Order the fried ice cream! absolutely AMAZING more

This place is going downhill! 4/29/2006

I used to love this place because if I went with a few friends, we were all guaranteed to drink yummy margaritas and there would be no obligation to eat if someone wasn't hungry. Now, the restaurant's new rules contribute to it being a completely disappointing experience. When we made reservations for a group of 10, they didn't tell us that we'd have to spend at least $8 per person JUST on food or they would charge us. While the staff used to be friendly, the last two times I've gone, the staff has been incredibly rude, inaccessible, and inconsiderate. They would not take empty pitchers off the table, even our server forgot to take some of our orders, and the bus boy spashed us while he was tossing plates into his cart. This place is very poorly managed and seemingly short-staffed. Pros: cheap margaritas, good desserts Cons: horrible service, average food, short staffed more

This place used to be fun. 4/29/2006

I have been coming here for many years and believe me when I say this. Their food has ALWAYS sucked. Cheep ingredients, thrown together slop. But that didnt mater in the past because people went there to get drunk since its BYOB. They have awesome margarita mixes and free nachos with sauce. Now theyre trying to turn the place into a more family friendly place, and force a minimum order amount on you. Now this wouldnt be such a bad thing, accept for the fact that I dont like to pay money for cheep small-portioned wana-be-Mexican slop. Pros: BYOB, Good fried icecream Cons: awful service, awful food more

Attention all who Attack azteca 4/13/2006

Azteca is wonderful. Being a customer for 8 years, I have had many experiences at this Philly landmark, and I would be less than honest if I said that I never had a mistake in all those 8 years. But if I ever did the staff fixed it quickly, and always with a smile. Some people, like those ignorant & with absolutly no class who blatently attack this restaurant because they did not like the way the cheese intermingled with their taco salad need to grow up and get a life. If you have a serious complaint, you address it there and then, you dont run home to mommy's basement and write unsubstantiated reviews. To everyone else, El Azteca is great. Great food, friendly waiters, cozy atmosphere, and affordable. So try this Philly landmark out! Pros: service, cuisine, price more

Best Mexican In Philly 4/5/2006

Having lived on the west coast, I'm pretty picky about mexican food. El Azteca is definitely the best, overall, that I've found in the city. Certain dishes at Tequila's are a little better, but Tequilas is so overpriced and they have the rudest waiters I've ever seen. The best El Azteca is in the northeast. Center City is good. Avoid the one in Marlton, NJ. We love the enchiladas and chimichangas. Avoid the guacamole and don't bother with thier mole sauce. La Esperanza (Lindenwold, NJ) is the only place with good mole. La Esperanza is actually the most authentic Mexican in the area, but El Azteca gets my vote for the city. As for the service, it's pretty average for Philly. Pros: quality, value, large selection Cons: parking, ambiance more

Average Mexican Food 2/26/2006

I had read some good reviews and was looking forward to trying out El Azteca... I left less than pleased. I had the jumbo quesadilla... it wasn't bad, however, the cheese resembled something more like the cheese whiz you find on a Pat's Cheesesteak. For dessert, my fiancee and I shared the Banana Changa. Although it tasted very good, when we got to the center of it, we found it still partially frozen. When we notified the server, he seemed far from surprised. He indicated that it happens frequently, since the outside cooks extremely fast in the deep fryer and doesn't allow enough time for the inside to thaw. We were given a second one to take home on the house as compensation. Overall, the food was average Mexican and the service was marginal at best. Pros: nice ambience, reasonable prices, large portions Cons: average food, service more
