Ego's

This place is horrible. I live near by and see and most definitely hear exactly what goes on in there. People who drink there only go for the sad karaoke events that happen EVERY night. The place is dark but you can still see the dirt. They have no security (I think the person checking ID is 12). If you want to hang with people who act like animals from around 11:00pm to 2:00am, then this is the place for you. You too can be falling out of the door screaming unintelligible sentences while staggering around the parking lot as you try to find your car through a drunken haze! You too can have zero respect for the people who live right opposite the door you fall out of! If you aren't a night time person, then why not just pull into the parking lot on your lunch hour and blast out some crap music because everyone living around the bar really wants to hear how sad and disrespectful you are. Maybe one day, the people who drink in this nasty hole, will see the minuscule signs Ego's placed on the walls reminding the drunks to respect their neighbors. more

I think some of the other reviewers need to lighten up a bit on this place. I use to be a regular with my friends and we would do karaoke once (sometimes twice) a week. On the drink side -its not great but they do have good prices and the bartender is sweet and hardworking. The DJ that use to be there, Skip, was perfect and made the whole experience fun. So, I would definitely recommend Ego's for anyone who wants to karaoke without feeling embarrassed. I have an awful voice, but usually the crowd sings along and laughs with you not at you. more

I've been tattooed lots of different places, even out of the States and Billy Hll is by far the best! You are guarenteed to have a ball with him and his work is flawless! more

This used to be one of the best places to play music, hear music and have drinks in Austin. Since it's move to Karaoke, it is just sad and lonely. Made the mistake of going in their a few months ago and I felt I lost a part of my soul... and not in the good way I used to lose my soul there. Stay away. Don't support this place and hopefully it will either close or the owner will learn his lesson and realize that South Austin doesn't give a damn about Karaoke. Bring back live music at Egos! I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself. I had heard this Austin institution had went soft so I went there last night to see for myself. It was a sad, sad, site. I will never go back Ego's. I loved this place, spent much money here on Lone Stars, saw many great shows, famous folks, & danced my self silly. It is no more. Just a cheezy sad place for cheezy sad people to go. Ego's has undergone many changes recently and although I do miss hearing live music all the time I do not miss paying a cover. That's right NO MORE COVER at Ego's. The Karaoke is a bit of a change but it still has a great atmosphere with friendly bar staff. I have even gotten up and started to sing, something that I swore I would never do, and the funny thing was I had a blast! Although not entirely the same it still has all the qualities I look for in a bar, a comfortable place to relax and have a good time. It is also nice to go in now and be greeted when you walk in instead ignored for 5 minutes before even being approached. Ego's has undergone a major transformation for the better over the last six months. The rude and greedy bartenders have been replaced by much friendlier and able staff. The patrons and employees and the musicians who supported Egos for all of these years feel betrayed by the change to Karaoke. Please do not patronize this bar. Even if you like Karaoke, this place does not give a damn about you, they just want your stinking money. Let it die and let something better take it's place. On Friday night, they have the worst Karaoke host ever. He goes by Ares and was supposed to start at 10 PM but didn't start until 10:45 PM even though he was there earlier hanging out BSing. When he finally started, he gave no explanation or appology. He sang at the beginning of every rotation, even though there were about 15 customer singers. At 12:30 AM, I signed up for my next song and Ares said it would be about an hour and 10 minutes before I would sing. That would be about 1:40 AM and so I said OK. At about 1:30 Ares bored the audience with a 10 minute scream session he called a song and then, to my amazement, announced that the show was over. This is a guy who has a lot to learn about customer service. He starts late, finishes early and lies to customers. This is one Karaoke bar that I will never go to again. Ego's Lounge as you knew and loved it is no more. It has been turned into a Karaoke bar by it's owner. Seriously. A bar that used to bring you the likes of Dale Watson, Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkeart, Two Hoots and a Holler, James Hand and a million others is now a Karaoke bar. Goodbye Austin, it was good while it lasted. So if you're into $2.50 Lonestar and some dude sleazing his way through Hotel California for the third time, Ego's Lounge is for you! more

I go to Ego's all the time and find it fun. Yes sometimes its loud and there is uaually a cover, But its not smokey inside anymore and the music is GREAT 5 out of 7 days. I always meet the nicest people and leave feeling like I had a great time. It's also a great day time/ happy hour hang out very mellow. The staff is helpfull and experienced. Not to mention that the Ego's girls are super cute. Oh and did you know that it is under new management. The place keeps getting better. Where do they get off on charging so much for beer? I mean, I dig the atmosphere and all, but the staff is unfriendly and not particularly helpuful. Especially when grabbing you a $2.50 can of Schiltz. Want to pay a cover at 5:30 in the afternoon. Ego's is your place! Drop this place like a hot potatoe. Way overrated... I think this is my favorite bar in town. Nice and dark. Christmas lights. Friendly people. Good drinks. Too smokey, though. more
