Love Effies!!! Great Mousakka and tatziki! Portions are large (enough for two meals), service is fast, and they are consistent. I need an Effies fix at least once a week.

Way overpriced for minimal food. Paid over $40 for 3 pieces of meat and an appetizer that had about a tablespoon of hummus! more

Very Nice place! Great food! 11/1/2011

They had great food at a reasonable price. The atmosphere was very inviting, warm, and made me feel at ease. The outside garden is very lovely, and is remarkable with the scenery. I sat in the garden watching the snow fall down and it just gave me a warm feeling inside. Not many places can do that!!! The waitresses are nice, and inviting. Not much to say on that. In the short, i shall be returning for more guests! It is worth a try for everyone! more

decent food but ignored by waitress 7/28/2010

the food is good, but not great. the salad did serve 4, but it ought to for $16 - and there was very little dressing and flavor. the feta was very tasty, and good olives. our table was very cramped for 4 adults. we ordered salad and another shared appetizer (not worth 18.50 - we each only got a small plate full) - when we were done with these plates she never came back to clear the table. she just chatted away in the kitchen. never came back to ask us how it was. our dinners came - fish was ok, special eggplant was good, but it came on a bed of unseasoned white rice. Still all of our finished plates remained on our table. there was only 1 other group of 4 in the restaurant, so it wasnt as if she was too busy! she was friendly, just inefficient. this place is very small, and the decor is tacky like a bad hotel. there is even 1 whole wall that is just exposed sheet rock, half painted. if they deliver - do that !! Pros: authentic greek cuisin Cons: tacky atmosphere/neglectful waitstaff more

Lovely 2/11/2010

The best authentic greek food in town. My favorite dishes are the grilled feta with hot peppers and tomato the avgolemono soup is better than my grandmoms and the mousaka is to die for. So if you are looking for authentic greek you must go and Effie and her husband the chef will greet you. more

Best Greek Food 12/7/2009

Effie and her team are always pleasant and welcome you as if you are family. We have dined often over the past few years and love the food. Pros: Best Greek Food more

Roaches EVERYWHERE!!! 10/17/2009

I actually had a roach land on my head and another land on my arm. When we looked around, there were roaches all over the courtyard. One was crawling up a man's leg and many were crawling into the kitchen. it was grotesque!!! Cons: Roaches more

Wonderful!!!!! 6/6/2009

My Sister-In-Law and I ate here on a Friday night and the food was delicious! I was visiting from Tennessee and we had such great service. Our Waiter, Andre was the best! We had an appetizer sampler, greek salad with gyro meat and a lamb sirloin steak with potatoes and fennel. YUM! Pros: Great service Cons: Small more

Just Lovely 5/31/2008

Had a wonderful meal with my wife here recently. It was a Saturday night, somewhat late, but still very busy. We were seated inside which was hot and boring, but were shortly moved to an outside table. The food is very good, very straight greek. No flourishes but delicious, with substantial portions. The service, in opposition to some of the reviews here, was wonderful. Very friendly and casual- but attentive. We were never rushed- even when we were the last to leave. A great neighborhood place- I just wish it was in my neighborhood! Pros: Service, setting, food Cons: Inside could use a makeover more

Decent food that's not worth the lousy service... 5/5/2008

Effie's has charm, and the food can be good, but the service just never fails to disappoint. It can be slow, surly, uneven, and just plain wrong, even with just a few tables full. The restaurant also has a bad habit of booking a reservation then not honoring it, especially for the patio. Their favorite refrain (oh, we don't take reservations for the patio, when they had confirmed a patio table by phone just one hour earlier). Overall, there are much better options in Philly. Stay away from Effies until they realize that we're paying for an experience, and not just a dish of food... Pros: Food can be good at times, patio is nice break from street dining Cons: Font room smoky, back room is exile, service is just plain awful more

Delicious food, slooow service 3/8/2008

We should have listened to the previous poster! The host was great, waitstaff were nice, though not very attentive, but our dinner took an hour and a half to reach our table, with no acknowledgment of the long wait.\r Evidently slow service is the rule, rather than the exception. I really did enjoy my meal, but knew better than to order dessert-that might have tacked on another large chunk of time. Pros: delicious food Cons: hour and a half wait for entrees from the time we ordered them more

Great food, poor service 3/6/2008

I love greek food, and am very impressed by effie's. However, I like good service to accompany a good meal - and while the waiters/waitresses are courteous, the service is slow and it's hard to get a waiter's attention. Also good to know: there's a seating area when you first walk in, and then there's one in a back room, disconnected from the restaurant-- I ate in the back room once this winter and it was an awful experience. The waitress had to keep opening double doors to the freezing cold outside to go back and forth into the kitchen to get our food/drinks, blasting in wind right into the tiny seating area. The front seating area on the other hand is much more pleasurable. \r Summary: good food (especially the spanikopita), poor service....but the service doesn't keep me from coming back... more

A Charming Mainstay 1/27/2008

Effie's is a wonderful little place serving up home-cooked mediterranean-style food. I usually eat-out and everything is always great. The gyros are the best in the city (not greasy but filled with perfectly seasoned meat) and the lemon soup is probably the most comforting thing you could eat after a rough day - and, the baklava is to die for. If you eat-in, ask to sit in the back - it's more roomy and romantic. If you're just with friends then sit up front. Pros: great food, reliable, friendly staff Cons: wish it was bigger more

Cute and Delicious! 11/13/2007

my boyfriend and i were just walking by and decided to stop in for dinner because we didnt feel like cooking. We couldnt have walked into a better place! We sat in the back room, which was adorable (exposed brick walls, chandelier, double doors leading out to the courtyard), the service was excellent and the food was great! The mussels were delicious (they are spicy) and i was able to take some of the mousaka home for lunch the next day. Dont forget the baklava for dessert! Pros: BYOB, outdoor seating, great food, good for groups, excellent service more

BEST PLACE I HAVE EATEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! 5/26/2007

First of all, to the previous user who said that you should'nt ""waste your time there"", they are entirely wrong! It is the best food I've ever eaten in my entire life. The servers are nice and welcoming! The food is always hot and toasty when I get it. The prices are reasonable, too! So no one should listen to the people before us, because they are so wrong! I give it 20000 stars! Pros: EVERYTHING Cons: nothing more

Great food, cozy place 3/27/2007

We made reservations for 8 the day of. Great food, not the best service. Also, we were seated upstairs which isn't as nice as the back. Regardless, I would definitely go there again, and I highly recommend this place to anyone that likes casual, BYOBs, good food, and reseaonable prices. Pros: BYOB, prices, food Cons: atomosphere, not the greatest service more

Don't waste your time or money! 1/21/2007

My husband and I went with another couple to Effie's on Saturday night. The service was poor, at best, and my husband and the wife of the other couple received their food at least 10 minutes before her husband and I received ours. Ours was even ""on special"", which you'd expect to be quickly available. My husband's food was cold when it arrived to the table, and our ""special"" was barely edible and not at all what we expected from the description. We left hungry and disappointed. Cons: Poor service and even worse food more

good 9/23/2006

Well the previous person that posted was 100% correct. on the other hand the one before was a bit on the bad side. Well i am effies cousin. i've been there alot... since she is my cousin and i hate when people say bad things about her. \r If anyone does not beleive me, feel free to call effie or my uncle at pine street pizza. its right accross the street from effie's. more

Very tasty 9/20/2006

There is no other place like Effie's in the city. It's small and intimate; the servers are actually Greek; the food is very good; the prices are right; and the recommendations of the house are always perfect. They accomodate to every patron. There is absolutely no attitude at this place. The best place to sit is in the courtyard, or beyond the courtyard in the old-fashioned dining area in the back. It's so charming....and of course, the food is amazing. They have great potatoes! Pros: Everything more
