Lack of cleaning and communication 9/1/2012

Not at all happy. Had a beach rental for a week. Clearly not been cleaned when we arrived. Made a complaint that I had to chase three times to get a response. Response was that the $150 cleaning fee was still appropriate and 'you should have notified us upon arrival that the place had not been cleaned'! Not that easy late on a saturday night. To be honest though the biggest frustration was not that the place was dirty but the lack of communication and lack of interest from the durkin team. They really did not care. Will not be using them again. Shame really as with a bit of care and attention the house overall was good. more

Don't bother. Poor customer service. Disinterested staff who don't communicate. Dirty house that we had to clean from top to bottom before we could unpack. So much for the $150 cleaning fee they make everyone pay......and refuse to refund! more

Beware of Durkin Cottage Realty! 8/27/2012

Durkin lied regarding the suitability of the house we rented. Place had been listed as newly renovated. We needed assurance that the house had been pet-free due to our grandson's life-threatening allergies. Durkin assured us that the house had been pet-free in accordance with their no-pet policy. However, my grandson had to return home after a reaction. Upon investigation, there were signs that a dog had been kept in the house. There was chewed woodwork and evidence that a gate had been used to keep a dog on the lower level. Our grandson had to visit his doctor and our son lost time out of work. We were told that pillows and bedspreads would be provided. The pillows were so filthy (two had mold growing on them) that we could not use them. The wall-to-wall carpeting had not been given a good cleaning, with multiple, ground-in spots all over. The tub and rugs in the main bathroom had not been cleaned/laundered. Very Happy 2/14/2011

Rented a summer house on Great Island from Durkin last summer and I will rent the place again this year. Great experience! The house was great, as was the service. After reading some reviews I was hesitant about renting thru them. I am glad I took a chance. My family showed up to check in and get the keys to our rental at the busiest time possible on a Sat. The ladies @ Durkin were great! We were out the door and on our way to a great vacation in a matter of minutes. Very smooth. Our deposits were returned promptly without any hassle. more

Durkin Realty fails to do its job 1/14/2011

Regarding the previous review, we apologize to the owners but\r thoroughly blame Durkin Realty for failing to respond to the renter's\r multiple requests to inspect the rental property TOGETHER. It is\r important that any prior damages be documented. Also, there should be an inquiry into what occurs between the time renters leave and the time owners inspect the property. more

Beware of Durkin Realty 9/13/2010

We were pleased that the previous reviewer for Durkin Cottage Realty is pressing charges and reporting the company to the RI Attorney General's office. (We will be sending letters as well). Our complaint is identical: withholding a security deposit of $300 on bogus damage claims. The most ridiculous was "dog hair everywhere." We had no dog or animal of any kind. In fact, we cleaned the house very well, even though there is a $125 non-refundable clean-up fee in addition to the security deposit. If the owners wish to make a greater profit, why not do it honestly and simply raise the rent instead of basically stealing from tenants. more

The Durkin Owners & Staff are the most UNPROFESSIONAL PEOPLE I have ever delt with. They will not return callls or answer e-mails when they are trying to swindle your money from you. They are withholding my security deposit on bogus damage claims.... the shower bathroom tile fell off the wall & broke... clearly not a damage issue as it is a house maitenence issue. I have hired an attorney to resolve this issue as well as reported them to the RI Attorney General's Office.BEWARE future renters & buyers !! more

Terrible business 1/29/2010

Back to back years I had absolutely terrible experiences with Durkin. YEAR ONE; several friends and I paid for a 10 bedroom cottage in January. Fast forward to June we arrive at the house, are bringing our things into the house, and we are told we have to leave because there was a red flag with the person who rented the house. I understand Durkin is simply trying to protect their property from damage, however, we paid in January and were told to leave the day we arrived in June. Durkin provided no assistance in helping us find another beach house. Basically told us too bad, leave or they'd call the police.\r YEAR TWO; a friend of mine rented from Durkin for a week. After we left we were notified that there was a bad smell on one of the mattresses. You would think, goodbye security deposit. HOW ABOUT THIS? Durkin made us pay for an additional week of the house. Just to add to the dissapointed people who rented from Durkin. We too rented a 5 b'room house and found it to be in dire need of repairs, drawers were nailed shut... fridge door would not stay closed : we used duct tape for the week.. smells in the basement, broken light fixtures... a hole in the floor in front of the sliders.. NO curtains whatso ever in the entire house.. no broom or dust pan. We paid a cleaning fee, and there was a note on the fridge telling us we had to clean the entire house before leaving... we did that and found out later, that it was an outdated note, and we did not have to do any cleaning..(too late) there was a patch on the wall, which fell off while we were there, and it had a small hole in which we were told we weren't getting our deposit back because of .Well, by then I freaked out, had a few discussions with the office, and was sent my deposit back. We have rented from Durkin for many years, this was the worst... the house on Melville was not kept up by more

Great Service and Quality at Durkin Cottages 3/31/2009

I was a grad student at the University of Rhode Island and needed a place to stay for one semester. I contacted Durkin Cottages and the staff was extremely helpful, accommodating, and provided exceptional service. They helped me move into a very nice place within a matter of days...they even called few days later to see how I was adjusting and how the move-in went! This was a few years ago, and last summer I wanted to rent a cottage and decided to go with Durkin Realty again. I was contacted almost immediately, to help me through the Summer Rental process. Lastly, I do not agree with any of the poor reviews below. I have had nothing but positive experiences when I have rented from Durkin Realty. Durkin Cottages was always on call and they were always there to help with any problem that I ever had, no matter how insignificant said problem may have been. \r \r I believe the previous renters weren't used to a realty company that takes great interest and pride in not only their tenants more

Terrible experiance 9/2/2008

I rented in july and i regret working with them. From the unprofessional staff and disgusting garbage situation. Apparently when someone checks out of house Durkin Cottages does not pick up the trash. So for 3 days we had to deal with the smell of rotting fish and other seafood, and since the garbage cans were full we had nowhere to secure our garbage which led to animals in the garbage . When I called the office I was told im going to have to wait until monday when the trash is picked up. more

I stumbled on a poor review of Durkin Cottages as I was looking up their website to get details on our rental for this summer. We have been renting from them annually since 1991 and have always found them to be extremely professional, accomodating, and reasonable. \r They rent cottages and houses in a very wide range of price points from VERY simple shacks to oceanfront mansions. Renters need to adjust their expectations accordingly. I encourage anyone who is interested in spending time in Narragansett (and everyone should) to give Durkin a call. more

We used Durkin cottages to find a winter rental, and I regret working with them. The cottage we rented did not have adequate heating, and the heat went out in the middle of the winter. It took days to be repaired, and we had to stay with friends. All of this would have been somewhat excusable if the owner of the cottage and Durkin hadn't been aware that year after year they have the same problem at this cottage and yet they continue to rent it out. That seems very irresponsible. \r \r I also had a problem with the owners taking out part of the deposit for bogus claims. Durkin was unwilling to help, and I had to resort to writing the owner myselves to get the rest of my deposit back.\r \r Overall, it was a terrible experience, and I would not recommend using Durkin realty. more
