Health Hazzard - BEWARE 10/28/2007

So i was talking to a friend of mine who works at Dolce in Newport Beach and he mentioned that the place had been shut down by the health dept. I thought it may be in the publics best interest if they were made aware of this. I'm not exactly sure what the reasons were behind the shutdown, but it must have been pretty bad if the health dept forced them to close their doors. Just a heads up people, and in all honesty the food and service have been unsatisfactory both times i have eaten there. more

New chef and new menu...should have stayed with what was working. 4/23/2007

Went there based on sample menu posted on the internet. Bad omen when web-site no longer exists the day of the reservation. We went on 4/20/07 and were informed that the new chef was ""tweaking"" the menu and figuring out what was working and what wasn't. Appetizers: Tuna two ways (lightly seared and tartar) - so-so presentation with a non-descript wasabe sauce on the seared ahi, tartar was plain with an overly spicy dressing that overwhelmed the taste of the ahi. The portobello mushroom was much better - a nice combination of meat and cheese filling. So, 1-for-2, and we were ready for the specials. We ordered the two specials of the night - sea bass encrusted with almonds on a bed of lobster rissoto, and the duck confit with buttered gnocchi. Sea bass was prepared nicely, but the rissoto was too cheesy and you could not taste the lobster. No color to the plate - would have been nice to have some greens. My duck was not memorable - too many stewed sour cherries, the gnocci was doughy, heavy, and overwhelmed the duck, the best part was the steamed spinach. Bread served with the house olive-hummus was actually the best part of the entire meal. Sommelier (or the gentleman attempting to pass himself off as one) offered no suggestions, and our server knew nothing about wine. We ended up ordering two glasses (a pleasant white and okay red). Very disappointed - will not go back. Pros: Potential, and an extensive wine list Cons: New chef, new menu...not working. more

You must try the filet fuselli pasta dish! You will love it! And I am not typically a big pasta fan either! Pros: good italian cuisine! more

Had a great time at Dolce! We were seated next to a fireplace. There were not a lot of people that evening so we had the whole dining area for ourselves. Most of the guests were seated on the patio by the firepit and it seemed kind of loud outside and casual. Not advisable for romantic dates, inside dining a must if going w/ a date. The steak cooked just right Md rare, not too salty yet very tasty. Great wine list. I had Leaping Lizard Cab 2001 very reasonable price. I'd recommend this place to anyone Not sure how it is like when it's busy. tables were a little cramped. Great arts on their walls. Modigliani style paintings. Pros: ambiance, cozy fireplace, great food & wine more
