Best

Gotta love the Dobie. I mean, seriously, you are required by local ordinance to love the Dobie Theatre. Failure to do so will result in a $500 fine or three days in jail.

Dobie Theater 3/27/2006

Dobie Theater is a good place to catch independent films year-round. It's not the most comfortable or nicest-looking theater, but you'll definitely get your money's worth when you can't find that movie playing anywhere else. They also have special events showing old movies and their midnight shows are also kind of fun. If you're a UT student, then this theater is convenient since you don't have to drive anywhere. If you're not, though, then you can park on the garage across the street. Just make sure to get your parking validated when you buy your tickets. more

Unique Concessions, Different Movies 8/26/2005

Dobie isn't going to provide the largest screen in town, nor is it going to be an audiophile's dream. However, they do offer showings of independent films and smaller release pictures. Sometimes you will catch a gem, and sometimes you might think "why did i waste my time?" Stepping outside of your comfort zone will be rewarded, however. If the movie is no good, you still have the gourmet concessions to fall back on (world chocolates, good coffee, etc). more

Dobie Theater 8/19/2005

I was a resident in Dobie dorm and made several visits to the Dobie theater. The theater shows many independent and off- main stream movies. They also show random oldies. When I was there, they showed Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Once, Sandra Bullock came to the movies there as well. Nice atmosphere. Good rating. more

Movie place close to campus 8/18/2005

Dobie theater is located in the dobie mall, where is the place you can eat, shop and also watch movies. The location is very close to the campus of University of Texas at Austin. Lots of college students go there. The theater is not big, the screen is small, and the seat is not comfortable, but if you don't want to drive too far, it is a good place, and they carry some good movies sometimes. more

Nifty selection of flicks, not the greatest environment in which to watch them. 8/18/2005

I first ventured over to Dobie as a freshman at UT. It's a fun place to watch a midnight movie. They play obscure and foreign movies. The interior is charming...lots of art and neat decorative items. HOWEVER, the seats are old-school; no stadium seating so you are in trouble if the guy in front of you is a basketball player. My favorite perk: free parking with a validated ticket at the ticket booth! more

Great for on campus..but 8/17/2005

Dobie Mall is a great place to eat and shop for the tenants that live above, but also a place to see a movie. They are located at the corner of Guadalupe and 21st. This makes the theater easily accessible by most college students. The first film I saw here was American Beauty, and they continue to carry many independent and eclectic movies. I applaud them for the movie selection; however the theater seating isn't that comfortable and I'd rather drive elsewhere to see an action movie where I need full surround sound. The screen is small and every time somebody leaves the theater you see a bright lite. Great for on campus but head elsewhere if you have a car. more

Great Independent Theater 8/15/2005

Come to Dobie to watch all the independent films. They are truly a unique theater. Every viewing room inside dobie is slightly different in design. If you show up before the movie starts check out the designs on the wall. Walking distance from campus. I saw super size me there, and enjoyed it greatly (not just because of the movie but because of the atmosphere as well) more

The place for independent films 8/7/2005

Dobie is a great place to catch the lastest indy film releases. Of course, the definition of independent films vary. Here you'd find the 'bigger' independent films. The ticket prices are kinda high, around $7 last time I checked, but there are plenty of promotions. In the beginning of the year, you can get buy one get one free offers. They also have free screenings usually on weekend mornings that you can attend. Certain days and times can also ensure cheap tickets. Midnight shows are a pretty good way to go. The screens are not very large, but the decorations are cool. One room has gargoyles, another has an egyptian theme. It makes the theatre feel a little more personal than being in a stadium style tacky 40 screen cineplex. more
